Skeletal disorders pose significant challenges to health and quality of life, underscoring the critical need for innovative bone repair methods. Recent studies have spotlighted the promising role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in conjunction with biomimetic peptide (BP) WKYMVm (WK) for bone repair. This research leveraged a self-healing hydrogel as a carrier, effectively loading EVs and WK to enhance treatment efficacy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the characteristics of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in patients also suffering from type 2 diabetes (T2D) to help with early diagnosis and treatment.
  • A total of 93 patients were analyzed using metagenomics next-generation sequencing, with 46 having CAP/T2D and 47 without diabetes, revealing significant differences in various health metrics between the two groups.
  • Results indicated that patients with CAP/T2D had higher infection rates and levels of inflammation markers, while their albumin levels were lower compared to those without diabetes, suggesting a more severe condition in the case group.

Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. With an increasing number of patients, NAFLD has been identified as a risk factor for Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). The precise pathophysiology of NAFLD-related HCC has not been completely understood recently.

Objective: To analyze the clinical characteristics and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid pathogens in elderly patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).

Methods: This was a retrospective observational epidemiological study using that elderly cases diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia receiving treatment at the Affiliated Hospital of North China University of Technology, Tangshan Hongci Hospital and Tangshan Fengnan District Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. A total of 92 cases were divided into two groups according to age.

Background And Aim: Hepatitis C virus infection can lead to an enormous health burden worldwide. Investigating the changes in HCV-related burden between different countries could provide inferences for disease management. Hence, we aim to explore the temporal tendency of the disease burden associated with HCV infection in China, India, the United States, and the world.

Background: The monocyte-macrophage-dendritic cell (DC) (MMD) system exerts crucial functions that may modulate fibrogenesis in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). In this study, we explored the cell characteristics, distribution and developmental trajectory of the liver MMD system in NASH mice with fibrosis and clarified characteristic genes of the MMD system involved in liver fibrosis progression in NASH mice and patients.

Methods: Single cells in liver tissue samples from NASH and normal mice were quantified using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis.

Background And Aims: Liver steatosis, as the main feature of metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), was associated with the progression of liver fibrosis and metabolic syndrome, which needed to be estimated accurately. In this study, we explored the significance of appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) in evaluating liver steatosis of MAFLD patients.

Methods: Eight hundred and ninety-nine cases with MAFLD from 2017 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) database were included.

Background: Compared with immunocompetent patients, immunosuppressed patients have higher morbidity and mortality, a longer duration of viral shedding, more frequent complications, and more antiviral resistance during influenza infections. However, few data on this population in China have been reported. We analysed the clinical characteristics, effects of antiviral therapy, and risk factors for admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) and death in this population after influenza infections and explored the influenza vaccination situation for this population.

Background: Posterior fixation without fusion can treat thoracolumbar and lumbar traumatic fractures effectively in certain cases. However, whether patients benefit from implant removal and the correlation between the range of motion (ROM) of the involved segments and the removal time have not been determined.

Methods: From 2018 to 2020, we retrospectively reviewed data of patients with AO spine type A or B thoracolumbar or lumbar traumatic fractures who underwent implant removal.

Background: Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses have undergone rapid evolution, and in recent years the complementary and antagonistic effects of HA and NA have gathered more attentions; however, the effects of co-occurring mutations in HA and NA on the patients' clinical characteristics are still poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed molecular epidemiology and evolution of A(H1N1) pdm09, explored co-occurring mutations of HA and NA, and investigated effect of co-occurring mutations on patients' clinical features.

Methods: A(H1N1)pdm09 was confirmed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction.

We investigated and analysed the molecular evolution of hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 influenza seasons in Beijing, China. We collected and extracted RNA from influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 strains from Peking University People's Hospital and analyzed their HA and NA genes by RT-PCR and sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis of HA and NA sequences was used to compare the amino acid sequences of 51 strains with those of reference strains.

Platelets primarily participate in hemostasis and antimicrobial host defense. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of leucine-rich repeat flightless-interacting protein-1 (LRRFIP1) on platelet agglutination. The bacterial strain of LRRFIP1 was used to synthesize the recombinant protein and a mouse model of LRRFIP1 gene knockout was established.

This study aimed to investigate the mid-term outcome of ring-shaped bone allografts in the surgical treatment of adolescent post-tubercular kyphosis secondary to spinal tuberculosis. The records of adolescent patients diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis who received treatment in our department between 2009 and 2013 were retrospectively reviewed. The anterior approach was used in cases of cervical kyphosis and the posterior approach was used in cases of thoracic and lumbar kyphosis.
