During a study to determine the pathogenic fungi overwintering on dead cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) roots, two isolates of Rhizoctonia solani Kühn anastomosis group 7 (AG-7) were identified. Isolate #213 was obtained from dead roots near Tifton, GA, and isolate #219 was cultured from cotton roots near Midville, GA.

Earlier studies have demonstrated hair cell regeneration in the absence of cell proliferation, and suggested that supporting cells could phenotypically convert into hair cells following hair cell loss. Because calcium-binding proteins are involved in gene up-regulation, cell growth, and cell differentiation, we wished to determine if these proteins were up-regulated in scar formations and regenerating hair cells following gentamicin treatment. Calbindin and parvalbumin immunolabeling was examined in control or gentamicin-treated (GT) bullfrog saccular and utricular explants cultured for 3 days in amphibian culture medium or amphibian culture medium supplemented with aphidicolin, a blocker of nuclear DNA replication in eukaryotic cells.

Objectives: The severity of pre-existing pathological changes in human saphenous vein (HSV) correlates with the development of vein graft stenosis and graft patency. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of pre-existing intimal hyperplasia on development of the neointima in vitro, using an organ culture model.

Materials And Methods: Segments of HSV were harvested during coronary artery bypass surgery.

In September, 1996, cotton bolls of NuCotn 35B, DPL 90, Hart 404, NuCotn 33B, and DPL 5415 grown in three eastern Georgia counties were found to contain internal lint rot within single or multiple locules. No external boll damage was observed. Damage was always more severe on NuCotn 35B.

The survival of the mycobiota on pod and stem debris of soybean produced in a no-tillage system with cover crops of alfalfa, canola, rye, or wheat or with no cover was studied during 1994 and 1995. Fiberglass mesh bags containing pods and stems were assayed every 28 to 31 days to determine the isolation frequency of fungi. Over 90% of the 11,906 isolates obtained were members of the Deuteromycotina.

Activated protein C resistance caused by factor V Leiden is an important thrombophilia disorder which predisposes to venous thromboembolism. Some studies also suggest a role in the pathogenesis of arterial thrombosis and atherosclerosis. The authors have investigated the prevalence of activated protein C resistance and factor V Leiden in a series of 45 patients with peripheral vascular disease.

Intestinal perforation in human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients due solely to Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) has rarely been described. A homosexual man with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-related KS who presented with an acute abdomen is presented. He was found to have a jejunal perforation through a small KS lesion.

Hair cells in the bullfrog vestibular otolith organs were immunolabeled by monoclonal and polyclonal antisera against calbindin (CaB), calmodulin (CaM), calretinin (CaR), and parvalbumin (PA). S-100, previously shown to immunolabel striolar hair cells in fish vestibular organs, only weakly immunolabeled hair cells in the bullfrog vestibular otolith organs. Immunolabeling was not detected in supporting cells.

A survey was conducted to examine the geographical distribution of plant-parasitic nematodes in Georgia cotton fields. A total of 778 fields in 11 Georgia counties were sampled from 1 September through 15 December 1995. Four nematode genera parasitic on cotton were found in this survey: Meloidogyne spp.

Candida species are opportunistic human pathogens capable of causing a variety of clinical diseases. Rapid and precise identification of Candida to species level is essential for effective treatment and management strategies. Conventional diagnosis of candidiasis is sometimes slow and variable.

Purpose: Angioscopy for in situ vein graft preparation has been criticized on the basis that the trauma of instrumentation may predispose to accelerated intimal hyperplasia, jeopardizing patency rates following infrainguinal revascularization. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of angioscopic preparation on endothelial integrity and smooth muscle cell (SMC) behavior in an established organ culture model of human saphenous vein (HSV).

Methods: HSV was harvested from 12 patients during bypass surgery before and after angioscopic preparation.

The vascular patient as a litigant.

Ann R Coll Surg Engl

November 1996

First medico-legal reports were written on 97 consecutive vascular patients (M-74; F-23). There was a four-fold increase in requests, from 17 reports in 1985-90 to 80 reports in 1990-95. There were 48 reports in connection with medical negligence claims with equal numbers instructed for the plaintiff patient and the defendant doctor; 32 industrial injury reports for vibration white finger; and 17 reports after work and road accidents.

Objectives: Many infrainguinal vein graft failures are due to progressive vein graft stenosis (VGS) from intimal hyperplasia. Systemic factors have been implicated in the aetiology of intimal hyperplasia. Hyperhomocysteinaemia (HHCA) is established as an independent risk factor for coronary and peripheral arterial disease.

Hyperhomocysteinaemia is an independent risk factor for the early development of arterial disease. Homocysteine and cardiovascular risk factors were assessed in 41 young and 25 older patients with vascular disease. As homocysteine may act by the generation of free radicals, total antioxidant capacity was measured.

Objectives And Study Design: The diagnostic capability of angioscopy for endoluminal evaluation is established and its superiority over arteriography for completion studies has been confirmed. The therapeutic use of angioscopy in vein graft preparation is more controversial. The aim of this prospective study was to establish whether angioscopic vein preparation confers real benefits over existing techniques.

Tibial vessel disease is an important cause of limb ischaemia, particularly in diabetics. Revascularisation by angioplasty and bypass is increasingly feasible. The aim of this study was to review treatment and outcome in patients with this patterns of disease.

The quoted combined mortality and morbidity following carotid endarterectomy is about 5-7%. In an attempt to identify a subgroup of high risk patients, a review has been undertaken of 404 carotid endarterectomies performed between January 1985 and March 1994. The perioperative mortality rate was 2%, with 3.

Rickettsiae were isolated by cell culture of buffy coat blood from six patients with spotted fever from southeastern Australia and Flinders Island in Bass Strait. The isolates were genetically compared with two previous Rickettsia australis patient isolates. The genus-specific 17-kDA genes from the isolates were compared after DNA amplification and restriction fragment analysis of the amplified DNA.

The quality of distal run-off is one of the most important factors in determining outcome of femorodistal bypass. Accurate evaluation is important. Preoperative intra-arterial digital subtraction angiography and Doppler evaluation with pulse-generated augmentation of 90 patients who underwent femorodistal reconstruction were compared with postoperative angiography.

A 73-year-old woman had undergone ascending aorta-bifemoral bypass 9 years previously and now required coronary artery bypass for unstable angina. The technical considerations for the operation had never been described. We successfully completed the operation by mobilization of the pre-existent graft as it exited the thorax and by intermittent aortic root perfusion of the graft.
