We present a photocatalytic protocol for the -arylation of carboxylic acids using nickel complexes bearing C8-pyridyl xanthines. Our studies suggest that the underlying mechanism operates independently of external photosensitizers. Stoichiometric experiments and crystallographic studies characterize the catalytically relevant Ni complexes.

Effects of puffing and extraction method on physical and biological efficacy of bitter melon was investigated. Puffing increased the Maillard reaction products, extraction yield, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents. Antioxidant activity was the highest at 980 kPa, but there was no significant difference between two extraction methods.

1,4-Azaborine-based arenes are promising electroluminescent emitters with thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), offering narrow emission spectra and high quantum yields due to a multi-resonance (MR) effect. However, their practical application is constrained by their limited operational stability. This study investigates the degradation mechanism of MR-TADF molecules.

Background: Current guidelines lack recommendations regarding the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for preventing upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) among patients at low risk for UGIB treated with dual antiplatelet therapy for ischemic stroke (IS). Our objective was to assess the effectiveness of PPIs in lowering the risk of significant UGIB in this patient group.

Methods And Results: A retrospective cohort study was conducted involving patients at low risk for UGIB admitted for IS between 2014 and 2018 and treated with dual antiplatelet therapy.

Background: Intensive blood pressure (BP) management within 24 h after successful reperfusion following endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is associated with worse functional outcomes than conventional BP management in Asian randomized controlled trials. Given the high prevalence of intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS) in Asia, ICAS may influence these outcomes.

Aims: We aimed to assess whether ICAS affects the outcomes of intensive BP management after successful EVT.

The reactivity of the V[triple bond, length as m-dash]C Bu multiple bonds in the complex (dBDI)V[triple bond, length as m-dash]C Bu(OEt) (C) (dBDI = ArNC(CH)CHC(CH)NAr, Ar = 2,6- PrCH) with unsaturated substrates such as N[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR (R = Ad or Ph) and P[triple bond, length as m-dash]CAd leads to the formation of rare 3d transition metal compounds featuring α-aza-vanadacyclobutadiene, (dBDI)V(κ- , - BuC(R)N) (R = Ad, 1; R = Ph, 2) and β-phospha-vanadacyclobutadiene moieties, (dBDI)V(κ- , - BuPAd) (3). Complexes 1-3 are characterized using multinuclear and multidimensional NMR spectroscopy, including the preparation of the 50% N-enriched isotopologue (dBDI)V(κ- , - BuCC(Ad)N) (1-N). Solid-state structural analysis is used to determine the dominant resonance structures of these unique pnictogen-based vanadacyclobutadienes.

Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We aimed to evaluate whether hemodialysis (HD) initiation is associated with CVD risk in patients with CKD.

Methods: This self-controlled case series, using data from a nationwide Korean health claims database, included patients with CKD who initiated HD between 2007 and 2019 and experienced CVD, including acute stroke or myocardial infarction (MI), between 2008 and 2020.

Background: To clarify if blood proteins can predict disease progression among individuals at clinical high-risk of severe mental illness (CHR-SMI), we developed a statistical model incorporating clinical and blood protein markers to distinguish the transition group (who developed severe mental illness) (CHR-SMI-T) and from non-transition group (CHR-SMI-NT) at baseline.

Methods: Ninety individuals (74 at CHR-SMI: 16 patients) were monitored for ≤4 years and were the focus of predictive models. Three predictive models (1 [100 clinical variables], 2 [158 peptides], and 3 [100 clinical variables +158 peptides]) were evaluated using area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) values.

The increase in methane emissions, a major greenhouse gas, threatens human well-being and global ecosystems due to its contribution to global warming. Livestock, particularly ruminants, have been a major research topic in recent decades due to their methane production. Therefore, the objective of the current review was to comprehensively discuss the in silico techniques used to mitigate methane production from ruminants.

Here, we investigated the complexation of short chain amylose (SCAs) and palmitic acid (PA), serving as polymeric building blocks that alter the selectivity and directionality of particle growth. This alteration affects the shape anisotropy of the particles, broadening their applications due to the increased surface area. By modifying the concentration of PA, we were able to make spherical, macaron, and disc-shaped particles, demonstrating that PA acts as a structure-directing agent.

The preparation of cationic bis(hydrosilane)-coinage-metal complexes by chloride abstraction from the neutral metal chloride precursors with Na[BAr ] is described. Unlike previously reported hydrosilane-stabilized copper and silver complexes, the presented complexes are cationic and feature two bidentate (ortho-silylphenyl)phosphine ligands. These complexes were fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis, revealing that both Si-H bonds are activated by the Lewis acidic cationic metal center.

Background: Guidelines provide various recommendations for the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) to prevent upper gastrointestinal (UGI) bleeding in acute myocardial infarction (MI) treatment with dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT). We evaluated the effects of PPIs in reducing the risk of severe UGI bleeding in patients with MI receiving DAPT.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients admitted for acute MI between 2014 and 2018, based on a nationwide health claims database in Korea.

Background: Multiple attempts of thrombectomy have been linked to a higher risk of intracerebral hemorrhage and worsened functional outcomes, potentially influenced by blood pressure (BP) management strategies. Nonetheless, the impact of intensive BP management following successful recanalization through multiple attempts remains uncertain.

Aims: This study aimed to investigate whether conventional and intensive BP managements differentially affect outcomes according to multiple-attempt recanalization (MAR) and first-attempt recanalization (FAR) groups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the impact of complex aortic plaque (CAP) on outcomes for patients who experienced cardioembolic stroke, focusing on both short-term and long-term effects.
  • Among 759 patients, 12% had CAP, which correlated with a higher risk of early ischemic stroke recurrence within 3 months, but did not affect immediate functional outcomes.
  • Long-term, CAP was linked to increased recurrence of ischemic strokes and major cardiovascular events, suggesting the importance of using transesophageal echocardiography to detect CAP in these patients to improve management and outcomes.

The reaction of Li[(TAML)Co]·3HO (TAML = tetraamido macrocyclic tetraanionic ligand) with iodosylbenzene at 253 K in acetone in the presence of redox-innocent metal ions (Sc(OTf) and Y(OTf)) or triflic acid affords a blue species , which is converted reversibly to a green species upon cooling to 193 K. The electronic structures of and have been determined by combining advanced spectroscopic techniques (X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR), X-ray absorption spectroscopy/extended X-ray absorption fine structure (XAS/EXAFS), and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD)) with theoretical studies. Complex is best represented as an = 1/2 [(Sol)(TAML)Co---OH(LA)] species (LA = Lewis/Brønsted acid and Sol = solvent), where an = 1 Co(III) center is antiferromagnetically coupled to = 1/2 TAML, which represents a one-electron oxidized TAML ligand.
