9 patients (6 female, 3 male) with either cholelithiasis or choledocholithiasis submitted to cholecystectomy were studied during the postoperative period. Sodium 6-[D-(--)-alpha-(4-ethyl-2,3-dioxo-1-piperazinylcarbonylamino)-alpha-phenyl-ace tamido]penicillinate (piperacillin) was administered in single i.v.

Intracavitary calcium phosphate deposits were observed in smooth, elastomeric blood pump sacs implanted in male calves for periods of 115 to 166 days. These deposits occurred predominantly on the flexing surface of the sacs. In contrast, similar pump sacs remained generally free of mineral deposits for up to 150 days in calves treated with the anticoagulant warfarin-sodium.

11 patients with cholelithiasis and choledocholithiasis, respectively, were cholecystectomized with subsequent inspection of the common bile duct. The drainage of the bile alpha-amino-3,6-dihydrobenzylpenicillin (epicillin, Spectacillin) were administered i.v.

For the present study a clinical method was developed to allow the direct or photographic recording of contact angles on solid surfaces within the oral cavity. This method, which was tested on four subjects, allows for relatively accurate and precise recordings of contact angles to be taken under relevant clinical conditions and without disruption of the surfaces in their normal state.

The in vitro activity of piperacillin, a new semisynthetic penicillin was compared with the inhibitory effect of other broad-spectrum penicillins and beta-lactamase stable cephalosporins. The examination was carried out by agar diffusion test with 1699 gram-negative strains. The antibacterial activity of piperacillin was generally superior to that of the other penicillins.

1922 stool specimens of children aged less than 14 years were screened for enteropathogenic bacteria over the past two years. In 24 cases Yersinia enterocolitica serovar 03 and 09, respectively, was identified. 16 of them suffered from acute gastroenteritis, 8 showed symptoms of pseudoappendicitis.

Samples of capacitor grade tantalum were surface-treated by a variety of methods. These surface treatments allowed testing of the same basic material which was mill-finished, metallurgically polished, electrochemically oxidized, sintered with a porous surface, and glow-discharged. Surface characterization was accomplished by contact angle measurements, Scanning Electron Microscopy, energy-dispensed x-ray analysis, and internal reflection spectroscopy.

Yersinia enterocolitica serovar 09 was isolated from stool specimens of two patients suffering from serious enteritis and pseudo-appendicitis, respectively. Both patients exhibited high titers of serum-agglutinins against the isolated strains. The Widal reaction against brucella-antigens was also found positive.

Within two years 51 infections caused by Yersinia enterocolitica were diagnosed by bacteriological and (or) serological tests (Yersinia enterocolitica Serovar 03 in 48, Serovar 09 in two and Serovar 04 in one). The latter was isolated from the discharge of a badly healing superinfected wound. In the other 50 there was feverish enteritis, in 12 with arthritic complaints.

Six bilateral loop arteriovenous fistulas from the femoral artery to the femoral vein were constructed in dogs using Dacron-mesh-coated human umbilical vein. Each graft was punctured twice weekly with a 16 gauge needle for up to 36 weeks, and biopsies were done every four to eight weeks. The long-term patency was 83% at 24 weeks.

The sensitivity against 5 antimycotics was examined with 353 yeast strains of 13 species from clinical material. The tests were carried out by means of the disc diffusion test on Bacto yeast morphology agar under standardized conditions. 33 (6.

Studies were made of oral films formed in vivo, which had been allowed to form on fused silica and Ge-prisms during periods between 2 s and 2 h using a variety of physico-chemical methods. To produce surfaces of different qualities the silica and Ge-prisms had either been detergent-washed, glow discharge treated or covered with polydimethylsiloxane. The following simultaneous analytical techniques were performed on the adsorbed films: a.

962 Klebsiella strains were isolated from a total of 15422 clinical samples. 782 of these were characterized as the species Klebsiella pneumoniae, 170 as "Klebsiella oxytoca" and 10 as Klebsiella ozaenae. 95 of the Klebsiella oxytoca strains originated from samples of the respiratory tract, 13 from purulent materials, 1 from blood and 61 from urine samples.

Yersinia enterocolitica (serotype 3 of Winblad, or O-group 1 of Knapp) was isolated from two blood cultures of a 52-year-old patient with chronic hepatitis, pancytopenia and paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria who had been hospitalised because of septic temperatures and chills. The serum-agglutinin titre was 1:10.000 both against the isolated strain and a reference strain (MyO; serotype 3).

Reconstructions were performed to the popliteal, tibial, and peroneal arteries employing a modified umbilical cord vein prosthesis. The latter was obtained from human cords and was made available as an onshelf graft for surgery following glutaraldehyde tanning. The early patency and limb salvage rates are equivalent to those obtained with autogenous saphenous veins.
