Cancer patients have higher prevalences of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs), occasionally associated with thrombotic events. A cross-sectional study regarding the presence of criteria (IgG/IgM anti-cardiolipin-aCL, anti-β2 glycoprotein I-aβ2GPI) and non-criteria (IgG/IgM anti-phosphatidylserine-aPS, anti-phosphatidylethanolamine-aPE, anti-prothrombin-aPT) aPLs in 146 patients with involuntary weight loss was performed. None of the patients had thrombotic events during the study.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune polymorphous disease that primarily affects women of reproductive age. This gender disparity has suggested the importance of investigating the role of reproductive hormones in the pathogenesis of the disease. Estradiol, the most potent form of estrogen, plays a key role in shaping the immune system including the production of lymphocytes, the peripheral differentiation of regulatory T cells (T-regs), antibody production, and the complement and interferon systems, and has been studied in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

The place of non-criteria antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) in the diagnosis of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is still debatable. The aim of this research was to evaluate the correlations between the titres of non-criteria aPLs (anti-phosphatidylethanolamine (aPE), anti-phosphatidylserine (aPS), and anti-prothrombin (aPT) antibodies), and the ones of the already studied criteria aPLs (anti-cardiolipin (aCL) and anti-β2 glycoprotein I-aβ2GPI antibodies). Altogether, 72 APS (30 primary and 42 secondary) patients were included in our study.

Introduction: Systemic sclerosis (Ssc) is a multiorgan debilitating autoimmune disease that associates the triad: vascular involvement, tissue fibrosis and profound immune response alterations. Numerous previous studies focused on identification of candidate proteomic Ssc biomarkers using mass-spectrometry techniques and a large number of candidate Ssc biomarkers emerged. These biomarkers must firstly be confirmed in independent patient groups.

Many observational studies have shown an association between the severity of COVID-19 and the different white blood cell counts, most frequently neutrophils, lymphocytes, and eosinophils. The studies aimed to predict the prognosis, and therefore, a causal relationship was unnecessary. However, if we begin to look at these biomarkers as potential therapeutic targets, then causality is essential.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the feasibility of EUS-guided choledochoduodenostomy (EUS-CDS) in patients with malignant distal biliary obstruction (MDBO), focusing on the size of the common bile duct (CBD) as a key factor.
  • Out of 491 patients analyzed, a significant percentage had CBDs larger than the expert and non-expert cut-off sizes, which suggests that EUS-CDS could potentially be performed in a large portion of these cases.
  • Age and bilirubin levels were found to be predictive factors for CBD dilation, leading to the development of a model that can help identify suitable candidates for this procedure based on specific criteria.
