Application of a coupled model of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance for estimating plant physiological response to pollution by fine particulate matter (PM).

Fine particulate matter (PM) is a current environmental issue that has an impact on the global ecology. Vegetation is a known sink for PM deposition but the effects of these particles on plant growth, and specifically on plant photosynthesis by changing their leaf water potential, are still not well understood. This study aimed to determine and characterize possible relationships between PM and plant photosynthesis under different PM concentrations.

Cellular Mechanisms of Hepatoprotection Mediated by M2-Like Macrophages.

BACKGROUND Acute liver injury in the setting of hepatic fibrosis is an intriguing and still unsettled issue. We previously have demonstrated the protective effects conferred by M2-like macrophages in the fibrotic liver. In the present work, we further decipher the cellular mechanisms governing this hepatoprotection.

Selenoprotein P as the major transporter for mercury in serum from methylmercury-poisoned rats.

Selenium (Se) has been found to promote weight gain, decrease hepatic damage, but redistribute mercury (Hg) in brains and livers in methylmercury (MeHg)-poisoned rats. The aims of the present work were to examine the effects of Se on the levels of Hg in serum and the role of serum selenoproteins in binding with Hg in MeHg-poisoned rats. The concentration of Se, Hg and MeHg were studied using ICP-MS and CVAFS.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been involved in the process of cancer occurrence, progression, and treatment. Lung cancer-related lncRNAs are still an emerging field, thus we sought to identify novel functional lncRNAs as candidate targets in lung cancer. Plasma exosome levels in non-small-cell lung cancer: Correlation with clinicopathological features and prognostic implications.

Background: Biomarker studies revealed important clinical significance of exosome for cancer patients. However, there is currently no consensus on exosome quantification methods.

Methods: Bicinchoninic acid (BCA) method, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) method and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) were utilized to quantify 20 plasma exosome samples, and interrelations between these three methods were explored.

G Protein Coupled Receptor 109A (GPR109A), which belongs to the G protein coupled receptor family, can be activated by niacin, butyrate, and β-hydroxybutyric acid. Here, we assessed the anti-inflammatory activity of sodium butyrate (SB) on 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis mice, an experimental model that resembles Crohn's disease, and explored the potential mechanism of SB in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In vivo, experimental GPR109a and wild-type (WT) mice were administered SB (5g/L) in their drinking water for 6weeks.

NKT cells in liver diseases.

Natural killer T cells are innate-like and tissue-resident lymphocytes, which recognize lipid antigens and are enriched in the liver. Natural killer T cells play important roles in infections, tumors, autoimmune diseases, and metabolic diseases. In this study, we summarize recent findings on biology of natural killer T cells and their roles in hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus infection, autoimmune liver diseases, alcoholic liver disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Protocol for a systematic review of methods and cost-effectiveness findings of economic evaluations of obesity prevention and/or treatment interventions in children and adolescents.

Background: Childhood obesity is a major global public health problem, with governments increasingly having to undertake various strategies to reduce excess weight in their populations. Considering the increasing number of well-conducted intervention studies in the field of childhood obesity prevention, there are relatively few published economic evaluations. The proposed systematic review will explore the methods of these economic evaluations, examine the limitations and establish the evidence base for cost-effectiveness analyses.

Memory Follicular Helper Invariant NKT Cells Recognize Lipid Antigens on Memory B Cells and Elicit Antibody Recall Responses.

Invariant NKT (iNKT) cells have been shown to help B cells in a cognate or noncognate manner; however, whether cognate iNKT cell help induces B cell memory responses remains controversial, and the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that, in the absence of follicular helper T cells, cognate iNKT cell help could promote B cell memory responses in mice that were dependent on the formation of memory follicular helper iNKT (iNKT) cells and their interactions with memory B cells in recall responses. Generation of memory iNKT cells required lipid Ag presentation by dendritic cells but not by B cells.

Therapeutic effects of liver soothing pingchuan formula decoction on experimental asthma in BALB/c mice via regulation of nerve growth factor-tyrosine kinase A pathway.

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of liver soothing pingchuan formula decoction (LSPF) on experimental asthma in BALB/c mice and explore its potential molecular mechanisms. An animal model of asthma was established in BALB/c mice through sensitization and activation with intraperitoneal injection of 10% ovalbumin (OVA)/Al(OH)3 solution in addition to inhalation of a 5% OVA solution. LSPF (300 and 600 mg/kg/day) was initially administered orally prior to activation.

Dynamic metabolic patterns tracking neurodegeneration and gliosis following 26S proteasome dysfunction in mouse forebrain neurons.

Metabolite profiling is an important tool that may better capture the multiple features of neurodegeneration. With the considerable parallels between mouse and human metabolism, the use of metabolomics in mouse models with neurodegenerative pathology provides mechanistic insight and ready translation into aspects of human disease. Using 400 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy we have carried out a temporal region-specific investigation of the metabolome of neuron-specific 26S proteasome knockout mice characterised by progressive neurodegeneration and Lewy-like inclusion formation in the forebrain.

Background: Previous studies reported that long-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution may increase the incidence of hypertension and diabetes. However, little is known about the associations of ultrafine particles (≤0.1 μm in diameter) with these two conditions.

Immunomodulation characteristics by thermal ablation therapy in cancer patients.

Aim: Thermal ablation therapy has recently emerged as a promising noninvasive treatment modality for localized solid malignancies. Except its direct tumor-cell-killing effect on local tumor tissues, the immunomodulatory effect has also long been noticed which too has substantial effect on clinical outcome, but it is complicated. Though much has been investigated and rich evidences have been achieved, the fundamental state and profile of immunomodulation by thermal ablation in cancer patients, its exact mechanism, especially the systematic mechanism, and its effect on antitumor immunity remain unclear.

Trends of foodborne diseases in China: lessons from laboratory-based surveillance since 2011.

Foodborne disease is one of the most important public health issues worldwide. China faces various and unprecedented challenges in all aspects of the food chain. Data from laboratory-based foodborne disease surveillance systems from 2013 to 2016, as well as different regions and ages, can be found along with differences in the patterns of pathogens detected with diverse characteristics.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities in the rhizosphere of a continuous cropping soybean system at the seedling stage.

Arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) fungi play a crucial role in the growth of soybean; however, the planting system employed is thought to have an effect on AM fungal communities in the rhizosphere. This study was performed to explore the influence of continuous soybean cropping on the diversity of Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, and to identify the dominant AM fungus during the seedling stage. Three soybean cultivars were planted under two and three years continuous cropping, respectively.

Efficacy and safety of apatinib as second-line therapy for advanced gastric cancer: a single-center observational study.

Apatinib has been proven to be effective and safe among patients in the third-line treatment of advanced gastric cancer in phase II and III trials. We aimed to evaluate its efficacy and safety in second-line practice, and to explore the factors associated with efficacy. Between April 2015 and May 2017, a total of 23 patients with advanced gastric adenocarcinoma or adenocarcinoma of gastroesophageal junction were enrolled and followed up retrospectively after failing the first line of systemic therapy.

Suppression of Natural Killer Cell Activity by Regulatory NKT10 Cells Aggravates Alcoholic Hepatosteatosis.

We and others have found that the functions of hepatic natural killer (NK) cells are inhibited but invariant NKT (iNKT) cells become activated after alcohol drinking, leaving a possibility that there exists interplay between NK cells and iNKT cells during alcoholic liver disease. Here, in a chronic plus single-binge ethanol consumption mouse model, we observed that NK cells and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) protected against ethanol-induced liver steatosis, as both wild-type (WT) mice treated with anti-asialo GM1 antibody and IFN-γ-deficient GKO mice developed more severe alcoholic fatty livers. Objective: To assess the associations between ambient temperatures and hospitalisations for coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke.

Methods: Our study comprised all residents living in Ontario, Canada, 1996-2013. For each of 14 health regions, we fitted a distributed lag non-linear model to estimate the cold and heat effects on hospitalisations from CHD, acute myocardial infarction (AMI), stroke and ischaemic stroke, respectively.
