Introduction: As a result of increased incidence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in young athletes, there is a rise in the indications surgical ACL reconstruction procedures. The value of anterolateral ligament (ALL) reconstruction emerges as a proposed solution to prevent graft failures and improve stability in this high demanding category of patients. The purpose of this study is to present our experience with a novel hamstring auto-grafting technique, the single antegrade sling graft (SASG), for combined reconstruction of both ACL and ALL using autologous gracilis (GR) and semitendinosus (ST) grafts utilizing a single femoral tunnel and double tibial tunnels.

Article Synopsis
  • Severe scorpion envenomation can lead to temporary myocardial ischemia, which is rarely reported but supported by various studies, including electrocardiograms and echocardiography.
  • This myocardial hypoperfusion may arise from catecholamine storms causing microvascular constriction and other neurohormonal interactions that contribute to cardiac fiber damage.
  • Management includes providing oxygen and ventilator support, and while dobutamine can aid cardiac function, antiplatelet therapy is not recommended.

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Computed tomography (CT) are crucial imaging techniques in both diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy. MRI provides excellent soft tissue contrast but lacks the direct electron density data needed to calculate dosage. CT, on the other hand, remains the gold standard due to its accurate electron density information in radiation therapy planning (RTP) but it exposes patients to ionizing radiation.

The goal of this study is to investigate the application of fractional-order calculus in modeling arterial compliance in human vascular aging. A novel fractional-order modified arterial Windkessel model that incorporates a fractional-order capacitor (FOC) element is proposed to capture the complex and frequency-dependent properties of arterial compliance. The model's performance is evaluated by verifying it using data collected from three different human subjects, with a specific focus on aortic pressure and flow rates.

Background: Takotsubo syndrome is comparable to microvascular acute coronary syndrome. It may partly share the same pathophysiology debated during scorpion envenomation (SE), with an adrenergic storm, without myocardial infarction due to the absence of coronary artery stenosis. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy can help to better understand the pathophysiology of cardiac involvement during scorpion envenomation.

Mobility is fundamental for social participation of people with disabilities. Unfortunately, traditional design of urban environments, including infrastructure and services are developed based largely on a standard perception of an independent, fully functional citizen without disability which limits the mobility social participation of PWD. This paper presents the design and development of a novel geospatial assistive navigation technology to support multimodal mobility of people with disabilities, especially those using manual wheelchair in urban areas.

Despite significant progress in the past decades, sepsis still lacks a specific treatment. Under normal conditions, leucocytes play a critical role in controlling infection and it is suggested that their activity is impaired during sepsis which contribute to the dysregulation of immune reactions. Indeed, in response to infection, several intracellular pathways are affected mainly those regulating the oxidative- inflammatory axis.

Carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) is considered a critical index to evaluate arterial stiffness. For this reason, estimating Carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) is essential for diagnosing and analyzing different cardiovascular diseases. Despite its broader adoption in the clinical routine, the measurement process of carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity is considered a demanding task for clinicians and patients making it prone to inaccuracies and errors in the estimation.

Modeling neurovascular coupling is very important to understand brain functions, yet challenging due to the complexity of the involved phenomena. An alternative approach was recently proposed where the framework of fractional-order modeling is employed to characterize the complex phenomena underlying the neurovascular. Due to its nonlocal property, a fractional derivative is suitable for modeling delayed and power-law phenomena.

In this paper, a multiple linear regression model for estimating the Carotid-to-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) from a single non-invasive peripheral pulse wave, namely blood pressure or photoplethysmography, is proposed. The training and testing datasets were extracted from in-silico, publicly available, pulse waves and hemodynamics data. The proposed model relies on a preprocessing and features extraction steps, which are performed using a semi-classical signal analysis (SCSA) method.
