Childhood trichobezoar.

Two cases of trichobezoar with unusual presentation in rural female children are described. The first one in a healthy asymptomatic child with no abnormal psychological behaviour and other one in an emotionally disturbed child with history of trichotillomania. Both were treated surgically with no recurrence.

Poisoning in children: Indian scenario.

The retrospective data on childhood poisoning from eight regional hospitals in India has been reviewed. The demographic features and types of poisonings encountered have been compared. The analysis of the data indicated that pediatric poisonings constituted 0.

Unusual diversity of human rotavirus G and P genotypes in India.

Between April and December 1993, we determined P and G genotypes of group A rotavirus strains obtained from children admitted to diarrhea treatment centers in five Indian cities. From a total of 63 rotavirus-positive specimens, we identified 10 different strains with five different G genotypes and four distinct P types by using reverse transcription-PCR. The common worldwide strains G1P8, G2P4, G3P8, and G4P8 were underrepresented among Indian children (33%), whereas strains of P type 6 (G1P6, G2P6, G3P6, G4P6, and G9P6), which primarily infect asymptomatic newborns but are rare in children with diarrhea were common in India (43%).

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection in Shimla Hills, Himachal Pradesh, India.

We came across some cases clinically suggestive of intrauterine infection which were confirmed to be congenital cytomegalovirus infection. A clinical profile of these patients is presented. Intracranial calcification was not seen in any of these patients.

Study of serum zinc in neonates and their mothers in Shimla hills (Himachal Pradesh).

Serum zinc level in cord blood of 159 neonates was estimated by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The cases were classified according to birth weight and gestation of babies as Term appropriate for date (TAFD), Term small for date (TSFD), Term large for date (TLFD), Preterm appropriate for date (PAFD), Preterm small for date (PSFD) and Preterm large for date (PLFD). The zinc level were also estimated in mothers of these groups at the time of delivery, and compared with cord blood levels of those in non-pregnant mothers.

Consanguinity and fetal growth in Pakistani Moslems.

There is conflicting evidence about the effect of parental consanguinity on fetal growth. Previous studies have not always allowed for other factors that are known to affect birth weight, in particular, gestational age, parity, and maternal height. We have therefore studied this question in the Pakistani Moslem population in Birmingham.

A maximum likelihood approach to continuous speech recognition.

Speech recognition is formulated as a problem of maximum likelihood decoding. This formulation requires statistical models of the speech production process. In this paper, we describe a number of statistical models for use in speech recognition.
