Experiential dimensions of Mindful Eating Practices are scarce in the literature. Aim: The study focuses on thirteen individuals with clinical obesity and nine post-bariatric surgery patients who engaged in MERP over three months. The present research utilized Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as the analytical framework of interviews.

Merging Clinical and EEG Biomarkers in an Elastic-Net Regression for Disorder of Consciousness Prognosis Prediction.

Patients with Disorder of Consciousness (DoC) entering Intensive Rehabilitation Units after a severe Acquired Brain Injury have a highly variable evolution of the state of consciousness which is a complex aspect to predict. Besides clinical factors, electroencephalography has clearly shown its potential into the identification of prognostic biomarkers of consciousness recovery. In this retrospective study, with a dataset of 271 patients with DoC, we proposed three different Elastic-Net regressors trained on different datasets to predict the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised value at discharge based on data collected at admission.

Bromelain-based enzymatic debridement of e-cigarette burns: a single unit experience.

Objective: It is widely accepted that the early debridement of burns improves outcome. There is increasing evidence that enzymatic debridement is an effective technique for removal of full-thickness and deep-dermal burns, reducing blood loss and often the need for autologous skin grafting by avoiding over excision of the burn. We aim to highlight the potential use of this form of debridement as an alternative to surgical management in patients with electronic cigarette (e-cigarette)-associated flame burn injuries.

E-cigarette burn injuries: Comprehensive review and management guidelines proposal.

Introduction: Electronic cigarettes (EC) have been reported to be associated with burns secondary to explosions of the device or battery, or contact from overheating, resulting in flame, contact or chemical burns. In addition to this, there have also been reported cases of soft tissue and bony trauma with or without associated burns. Using collective evidence, this review aims to summarise all reported burns associated with ECs, and its implications on immediate management with a particular focus on surgical treatment.

Mindfulness, self-compassion, and mindful eating in relation to fat and sugar consumption: an exploratory investigation.

While much research has focused on overeating when exploring constructs of mindfulness, mindful eating, and self-compassion, there is limited research on the specific relationship of these constructs with consumption of energy-dense foods that have a large impact on weight regulation. In a cross-sectional study, university students (n = 546) were recruited to explore the relationship between mindfulness, mindful eating, self-compassion, and fat and/or sugar consumption. Results indicated that all constructs were negatively related to fat and sugar consumption, but self-compassion did not do so in a univariate fashion.

Surgical and psychiatric profile of patients who self-harm by burning in a regional burn unit over an 11-year period.

Introduction: Patients admitted to hospital for deliberate self-harm by burning (DSHB) provide a challenge for medical, surgical and psychological management. We retrospectively reviewed all the patients admitted to a Scottish regional burn unit with DSHB over an 11-year period to assess demographics and outcome.

Methods: Ward admission data were used to identify DSHB patients admitted to the South East Scotland regional burn unit in Livingston, UK between 2002 and 2012, as well as a control group of accidental burn patients.

Intrapleural bupivicaine in latissimus dorsi breast reconstruction.

The use of intrapleural (IP) analgesia for controlling post-operative pain in breast reconstruction is not well documented. The objective of this study was to assess the value of IP bupivacaine in those patients undergoing latissimus dorsi breast reconstruction. Twenty-six patients received a single bupivacaine IP injection at induction of anesthesia.

Comparison of cartilage scoring and cartilage sparing otoplasty--A study of 203 cases.

Unlabelled: The Edinburgh experience of different methods of otoplasty techniques in 203 patients (406 ears) over a five-year period is reviewed.

Materials And Methods: The patients were divided into three groups - Group A (anterior cartilage scoring), Group B (cartilage sparing in the fashion of posterior suturing) and Group C (posterior suturing refined with posterior fascial flap). Demographic details, operation technique, operation time, grade of the surgeon, suture materials, early and late complications, recurrence and revision rates, patients' and physicians' comments at the follow-up clinic were retrieved from the case notes.

Local anaesthetics (LAs) are used by medical practitioners in a number of clinical settings. The choice of agent and mode of administration is influenced by their experience, speciality and knowledge of the evidence base. Patients often express concern about the discomfort experienced during injection.

Chromosomal alterations in breast cancer revealed by multicolour fluorescence in situ hybridization.

The aim of this study was to characterise cytogenetically, breast cancer cell lines and primary tumours to identify chromosomal regions of interest in breast cancer. Multicolour fluorescence in situ hybridization (MFISH) and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) were used to karyotype five established breast cancer cell lines and two short-term primary tumour cultures. Chromosome 8 was identified as a frequent target for aberrations in all cell lines and one primary culture by MFISH and CGH.

Chromosomal alterations in small cell lung cancer revealed by multicolour fluorescence in situ hybridization.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a major cause of cancer related morbidity and mortality. Karyotypic studies have revealed numerous chromosomal aberrations in most SCLC however, classical G-banding analysis is unable to fully characterise complex marker chromosomes. Recent developments in molecular cytogenetics now allow accurate identification of the chromosomal components of complicated rearrangements.

Karyotypic variation between independently cultured strains of the cell line MCF-7 identified by multicolour fluorescence in situ hybridization.

The breast cancer cell line MCF-7 is a widely used model in breast cancer research however a number of conflicting reports have been published regarding its biological properties. We hypothesised that there will be significant in vitro mutation and genotypic evolution over time in this cell line. To assess the genetic divergence of MCF-7 at the chromosomal level, we analysed MCF-7 cell lines grown independently at three different laboratories using M-FISH and CGH.

Evaluation of the factors related to postmastectomy breast reconstruction.

A retrospective study was conducted in 75 consecutive patients requiring postmastectomy breast reconstruction over a period of 30 months. Each woman was offered one of the following four reconstructive options: free transverse rectus abdominis musculocutaneous flap (total number of reconstructions, n = 34); latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap (with or without expander and implant, n = 14); endoscopically assisted harvest of the latissimus dorsi muscle (with expander and implant, n = 13); and application of expander and implant only (n = 12). Of those patients originally selected for retrospective study, six did not meet the short-term prognostic criteria, and concerted attempts to contact two others proved unsuccessful.

Anabolic steroid accelerated multicompartment syndrome following trauma.

The case is reported of a 23 year old male body builder who was involved in a road traffic accident after taking anabolic steroids. The resulting trauma caused a severe life threatening acute multicompartment syndrome resulting in the need for urgent multiple fasciotomies.
