Background/objective: Obesity is linked to increased risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Bariatric surgery (BS) aids in weight management, significantly altering body composition. This study evaluates the predictive value of five complete blood count (CBC)-derived indices [C-reactive-protein-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY), glucose-to-lymphocyte ratio (GLR), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, platelet (HALP), and controlling nutritional status (COUNT)] on body composition changes post-BS.

Article Synopsis
  • - Sickle cell disease (SCD) is caused by genetic defects affecting globin chains, and this study investigated the genes and pathways involved in its development.
  • - Researchers analyzed microarray data to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and found 447 DEGs in SCD patients, with 345 up-regulated and 102 down-regulated genes.
  • - The study suggests that understanding these hub genes can aid in diagnosing high-risk SCD patients and developing tailored treatment strategies.

Background: Liver hepatocellular carcinoma (LIHC) is a common cancer with a poor prognosis and high recurrence rate. We aimed to identify potential biomarkers for LIHC by investigating the involvement of hub genes, microRNAs (miRNAs), transcription factors (TFs), and protein kinases (PKs) in its occurrence.

Methods: we conducted a bioinformatics analysis using microarray datasets, the TCGA-LIHC dataset, and text mining to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with LIHC.

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a widespread health concern with high recurrence rates and substantial economic impact, and they can increase the prevalence of antibiotic resistance. This study employed an integrated bioinformatics approach to identify key genes associated with UTI development, offering potential targets for interventions.

Materials And Methods: For this study, the microarray dataset GSE124917 from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was selected and reanalyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • Ascariasis, a common helminth infection in humans, particularly in developing countries, often leads to various symptoms, but many individuals do not show symptoms at all.
  • The article discusses a case study of a young man who suffered from abdominal pain and constipation, ultimately diagnosed with partial bowel obstruction due to the infection.
  • It highlights the need to consider helminthic infections as possible causes of intestinal obstruction and stresses the importance of early diagnosis and treatment to achieve full recovery without surgery.

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a neoplastic hematologic disorder caused by the excessive proliferation of plasma cells and leads to bone lesions, anemia, and kidney failure. No definite etiology has been proposed for MM, but several environmental and genetic risk factors have been implicated so far. Exposure to pesticides, benzene, and organic solvents like methyl chloride have been considered a potential risk factor.

Various factors are effective in the development of minimal residual disease (MRD), one of which is MicroRNAs (miRNAs). miRNAs and their dysfunction in gene expression have influential role in the pathogenesis of leukemia. Nowadays, treatments that lead to the suppression or replacement of miRNAs have been developed.

Background: Comorbidity is a current area of interest in multiple sclerosis (MS) and is essential for multidisciplinary management. Although recent studies suggest that patients with MS have an elevated risk of developing inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the overall risk of developing ulcerative colitis (UC), specifically in patients with MS.

Methods: In 2021, a comprehensive literature search was performed on PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science to identify studies investigating the association between UC and MS.

Gastrointestinal malignancies are the most prevalent type of cancer around the world. Even though numerous studies have evaluated gastrointestinal malignancies, the actual underlying mechanism is still unknown. These tumors have a poor prognosis and are frequently discovered at an advanced stage.

Vaccine-associated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare type of acquired TTP recently reported after COVID-19 vaccination. Merely four cases are ascribed to the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine in the medical literature till the preparation of this study. In this case report, we describe a 43-year-old man who developed symptoms of TTP four days after receiving the second dose of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine.

Today, Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance (MGUS) is known as a plasma cell malignancy susceptible to evolving into the life-threatening stage, multiple myeloma (MM), without prominent clinical manifestations. Despite the discovery of advanced therapies and multiple pathogenic markers, the complexity of MM development has made it an incurable malignancy. In this study, the microarray dataset was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and analyzed using the LIMMA package of R-software to determine differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in MGUS and MM compared to the control samples.

The most prominent part of the cellular response of the immune system is driven by neutrophils. These cells tend to decline following chemotherapy in patients with leukemia. Neutropenia is an influential factor in the prognosis of cancer patients.

SARS-CoV-2 infection manifestation has great diversity and it becomes even greater while co-infection occurs or there is a serious underlying disease in an affected patient. In this case report, we present a case of a 71-year-old man who underwent a chest CT scan following the development of fever, weakness, and pulmonary symptoms. Chest CT scan showed segmental consolidation with centrilobular nodular infiltration, ground glass opacifications in the inferior segment of the left upper and lower lobes, and left lung pleural thickening which was atypical for either COVID-19 infection or pneumocystis carinii pneumonia but his SARS-CoV-2 PCR result was positive and he received COVID-19 treatment.
