Purpose: Polymeric clips (Hem-o-lok ligation system) are now widely used to securing the base of the appendix during laparoscopic appendectomy. Studies comparing the use of single or double hem-o-lok clips are limited. The aim of this study was to compare the reliability of a single hem-o-lok clips with a double hem-o-lok clips for closure of an appendiceal stump.

Synchronous celiac artery and superior mesenteric artery compression syndrome: The effect of collateral circulation on the treatment procedure.

Background: Maintaining collateral circulation is highly important in the stenosis of celiac artery (CA), superior mesenteric artery (SMA), and inferior mesenteric artery (IMA). The SMA compression is commonly reported to be accompanied by the CA compression caused by the median arcuate ligament (MAL) while the synchronous compression of CA and SMA by other ligaments has been rarely reported.

Design And Methods: A quantitative approach was used using a quasi-experimental single-group post-test design involved pediatric patients. The patients who were first attempted for peripheral vascular access were subjected to the procedure in accordance with the "PPIVA Pathway".

Objective: This study aims to examine whether cardiac surgery leads to symptom progression in the early postoperative period in patients with the peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and evaluate the difference between on-pump (OPCAB) and off-pump (ONCAB) coronary artery bypass graft surgery with regard to the symptom progression.

Methods: This retrospective study included one hundred consecutive adult patients with PAD at Fontaine stage 2b (pain-free walking distance less than 100 m) undergoing ONCAB and one hundred consecutive adult patients with PAD at Fontaine stage 2b (pain-free walking distance less than 100 m) undergoing OPCAB. Symptom progression was defined as the development of ischemic rest pain (Fontaine stage 3).

Impact of cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass on symptom progression in the early postoperative period in patients with peripheral arterial disease.

Patients And Methods: This retrospective study included one hundred fifty consecutive adult patients with PAD at Fontaine stage 2b (pain-free walking distance less than 100 m) undergoing CABG. The control group comprised 150 consecutive adult patients undergoing CABG with a normal ankle-brachial index (ABI).

Development of biofilm collectors as passive samplers in sewerage systems-a novel wastewater monitoring method.

In this study, a novel wastewater sampling method based on biofilm collection on a multi-armed polyethylene strips (so called "Octopus") is proposed. The implementation of this method is a step forward to prevent illegal industrial discharges into sewerage systems and receiving water bodies. Prior applications of biofilm collection were performed in Bielefeld, Germany, in 1994.

Rare Undifferentiated Tumour of Thyroid: Primary Thyroid Fibrosarcoma.

Primary thyroid fibrosarcoma cases are very rare. Although it is a known fact that soft tissue sarcomas show slow growth, there have been some cases in literature similar to our case in which there was a fast-growing tumour tissue causing breathing and swallowing difficulties due to painless pressure. For diagnosis, there is no specific clinical or radiological finding.

Effect of Intraperitoneal Etanercept on Oxidative Stress in Rats with Peritonitis.

Our aim was to evaluate effect of etanercept on oxidative stress parameters in rats with experimental peritonitis and investigate the availability of etanercept usage in the treatment of peritonitis in the future. Twenty-eight rats were divided into four groups as control (group 1), peritonitis (group 2), peritonitis + cefazolin sodium (group 3), and peritonitis + cefazolin sodium + etanercept (group 4). Peritoneal tissue and blood samples were taken from all of the rats for histopathological and biochemical examination.

In this study, a simplified and effective method was used to immobilize iron oxyhydroxide onto a pretreated naturally occurring rice straw (RS). The modified RS adsorbent was characterized, using scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyzer, and surface area analyzer.

Synthesis of coplanar PCT as reference substances for the residue analysis of polychlorinated terphenyls.

In the course of the development of a new and reliable analytical method for the PCT, a group of environmental contaminants, six coplanar terphenyl congeners were synthesized and characterized by means of spectroscopic methods. These congeners are 3,3″,4,4″,5-pentachloro-p-terphenyl, 3,3″,4,5,5″-pentachloro-p-terphenyl, 3,3″,4,5″-tetrachloro-m-terphenyl, 3,3″,4,4″,5-pentachloro-m-terphenyl, 3,3″,5,5',5″-pentachloro-m-terphenyl, and 3,3″,4,4″,5,5″-hexachloro-m-terphenyl. A combination of silica gel column chromatography and preparative NP-HPLC was successfully applied for the first time for the isolation of especially the asymmetrically chlorinated target compounds from product mixtures of the syntheses.

Application of simple and low-cost toxicity tests for ecotoxicological assessment of industrial wastewaters.

The objective of this study was to identify and to apply appropriate biotests having the advantages of being highly sensitive, easy to run, relatively inexpensive and able to substitute fish toxicity tests due to ethical reasons of animal welfare. To perform an ecotoxicological assessment of industrial wastewaters, different microbiotests were conducted to substitute the fish toxicity test with Lebistes reticulatus through Vibrio fischeri, Thamnocephalus platyurus, Daphnia magna, Lemna minor and Lepidium sativum representing different trophic levels in the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Also, Algaltox F(TM) with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Protox F(TM) with Tetrahymena thermophila tests were carried out.
