Deep lymphatic drainage plays an important role in the lung, as it removes foreign materials laying on the airways surface, such as pathogenic microorganisms. This drainage is also associated with lung tumour dissemination route. Liposomes with a specially tailored membrane were used as foreign particles to be removed by the lung lymphatics.

Silicosis is a diffuse interstitial fibronodular lung disease, caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica. We undertook a brief review of the topic, focusing on the most important aspects and performed a retrospective analysis of 84 patients admitted to the Pulmonology Ward of the Coimbra University Hospital over a 10-year period whose main or secondary diagnosis was silicosis. We also present the most relevant clinical features and the conclusions drawn from this review.

CD86 is a well-known costimulatory molecule in its interaction with CD28 and/or CTLA present on T cells, and is essential for full activation of naïve T-cell and subsequent differentiation. Usually the B7 molecules are expressed mainly on APCs and B cells and in specific conditions on other activated cells. These costimulatory molecules are involved in the development of allergic inflammation and airways hyperreactivity (AHR) in allergen-challenged mice.

"This article demonstrates how Portugal, despite appearing to be a country which would be [an] unattractive country to immigrants, is rapidly becoming a country of immigration. The existence and extent of opportunities for immigrants in Portugal is assessed with this objective in mind. On the basis of an analysis of the country's labour market, the immigrants' economic profiles and the Portuguese informal economy--and the interaction of these factors--it is concluded that the Portuguese economy is currently generating labour demands which the immigrants are satisfying.

Among the causes of the radiological entity known as unilateral or total hyperlucent lung is the decreased blood flow in the lungs. Unilateral and total hyperlucent lung results, among other factors, from the decreased intrapulmonary blood flow. Classically, the diagnosis and haemodynamic evaluation of these situations were usually made through invasive methods: right heart catheterism to perform angiopneumography and pressure evaluations as well as oximetry at several levels of the vascular network, thoracic aortography eventually associated with selective arteriography to detect the abnormalities of the systemic thoracic circulation.

Neopterin is derived from guanosine-triphosphate, produced by stimulated macrophages under the influence of gamma interferon of lymphocyte origin. It has been suggested as an excellent marker for activation of the monocyte/macrophage axis in some clinical situations. We evaluated its concentration in the pleural effusions of 25 individuals (10 tuberculous and 15 neoplastic) as well as in the blood of 22 of them (8 tuberculous and 14 neoplastic), comparing these levels with those of a control group in 99 normal individuals.

A new method of ventilation and perfusion display onto a single image is presented. From the data on regions of interest of the lungs, three-dimensional histograms are created, containing as parameters X and Y for the position of the pixels, Z for the perfusion and colour for local ventilation. The perfusion value is supplied by sets of curves having Z proportional to the local perfusion count rate.

This study attempts to correlate levels of ADA in tuberculous and neoplastic pleural exudates with the different immunologic cellular expressions that follow these clinical situations. Seventy-three patients with pleural effusion were studied in order to assess ADA activity (pleural and serum); in 25 of them, a study of delayed cellular immunity (pleural and sanguineous) was performed through B, CD3, CD4, and CD8 lymphocytic populations. The activity of ADA was determined, and the study of lymphocytic populations was made through the use of monoclonal antibodies.

This study on workers in a uranium mine is principally concerned with the characteristics of the cells recovered by LBA. First, alveolar macrophage function was studied (including viability, phagocytic activity, capillary adherence and migratory activity). Secondly the lymphocytes were identified as T, B, and then their mitogenic responses were studied; occurring spontaneously or in response to phytohemagglutinin or purified protein derivative.
