Melatonin (MEL) is a conserved molecule with respect to its synthesis pathway and functions. In crayfish, MEL content in eyestalks (Ey) increases at night under the photoperiod, and this indoleamine synchronizes the circadian rhythm of electroretinogram amplitude, which is expressed by retinas and controlled by the cerebroid ganglion (CG). Blindness is a pervasive sensory condition that imposes diverse difficulties to carry on with activities of daily living. In blind individuals, the brain is subjected to a large scale reorganization characterized by expanded cortical territories associated with somatosensory and auditory functions and the recruitment of the former visual areas to perform bimodal somatosensory and auditory integration. Background: In vitro fusion of transfected cells expressing the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) envelope proteins gp120/gp41, with target cells expressing CD4, and a suitable chemokine coreceptor is used widely to investigate the mechanisms of molecular recognition and membrane fusion involved in the entry of the HIV genome into cells and in syncytia formation.

Methods: We developed an assay that uses two different fluorescent lipophilic probes to single label each reacting cell population and flow cytometry to quantify the extent of cellular fusion after coculture.

Results: Fused cells are detected as double-fluorescent particles in this assay, therefore permitting measurement of their proportion in the total cell population.

In this study, we determined the effect of biotin deficiency on 4-wk-old Balb/cAnN mice during 20 wk of experimentation. The growth rate of mice slowed significantly during the first 6 wk of consumption of a diet designed to induce biotin deficiency; thereafter, from weeks 7 to 20 there was progressive weight loss in the mice receiving the biotin-deficient diet.

Intraventricular administration of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) obtained from sleep deprived (SD) animals and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) have been shown to increase rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. It has thus been suggested that VIP may accumulate in the CSF as a consequence of waking, and might thus be partly responsible for the subsequent rebound of REM sleep which follows prolonged wakefulness.
