A female dog, inoculated with a rabies isolate from the saliva of an apparently healthy Ethiopian dog, developed rabies but later recovered without supportive treatment. Rabies virus was isolated from the saliva collected 42, 169 and 305 days after recovery. Sixteen months after it recovered, the dog suddenly died after giving birth to two stillborn puppies.

Protoplasts from the tetraploid population contained twice the amount of DNA, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCase), chlorophyll (Chl), and chloroplasts per cell compared to protoplasts from the diploid population.

The concentration of RuBPCase in leaf extracts was determined by rocket immunoelectrophoresis.

General anaesthesia was given by 21 anaesthesists: 5 applied ventilation only through a conventional intubation tube. Of the remaining 16 anaesthesists, 8 constantly prefered, 4 used occasionally jet ventilation (JET), and 4 applied both methods alternatively.

The study population consisted of 240 volunteers from a veterinary hospital, 165 of whom had prior vaccination with duck embryo rabies vaccine (DEV). Vaccine safety was good; only minor reactions were experienced, all of which resolved spontaneously.

The excretion of rabies virus in the saliva was studied before and during illness. Nine of 17 dogs that died after injection with the Ethiopian strain had virus in the submaxillary glands.

In a sixth group of 47 persons previously vaccinated with duck embryo rabies vaccine (DEV), we evaluated the booster responses after a 0.1-mL dose of intradermal (ID) HDCV.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA case is described where a near-fatal hemothorax developed in a child (age 13 months) right after the removal of the subclavian vein catheter. The catheter was introduced a week earlier and it had functioned without disorder. The possible mechanism of the complication is discussed.

Suppression of these responses with cyclophosphamide both increased the overall mortality rate from (50 to 100%) and delayed onset of disease signs and death for 1 to 2 weeks. Despite the absence of disease signs in these immunosuppressed animals, virus was present in the central nervous system, as shown by fluorescent-antibody staining of corneal epithelium.

Full documentation of every case of central venous catheterization is a prerequisite for reducing the incidence of failures and complications. A laboratory computer program already in use was modified for this purpose: the start of the operation is put in in "real time", abandoned or failed procedures or incomplete data are detected, and can be queried on the day of patient is discharged from hospital. Adverse effects are shown up at an early stage by the quarterly print-out.

Saliva and blood specimens were collected three times weekly and cerebrospinal fluid weekly. Saliva samples collected on days 42 and 169 after the dog's recovery produced fatal rabies infections in mice inoculated intracerebrally.

Two dogs, inoculated with a strain of rabies virus from Ethiopia, showed typical signs of rabies 8 days after inoculation. After 3 or 4 days with a deterioration in the physical condition, both animals began to recover, as shown by increased muscular movements, reaction to stimuli, awareness of surroundings, and attempts to rise. Both animals recovered completely, although 1 then died of Pseudomonas bacterial pneumonia.

Daily saliva samples were then taken from these animals to determine whether they excreted virus and for how long. Vampire bats appear to react to rabies virus as do other animals, with variable incubation periods, some excretion of virus in the saliva, but no prolonged excretion "carrier state.
