Objective: The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) activation is the milestone in ascites formation. Hypertonic saline solution (HSS) has attracted considerable interest over the last years in ascites control. Other therapeutic models and concepts have been introduced to overcome diuretic resistance and control ascites.

This randomized controlled prospective study involved 64 patients with chronic hepatitis C and liver fibrosis. Participants were randomized into 3 groups: group I (control group; n = 21), members of which received traditional therapy only; group 2 (ramipril group; n = 21), members of which received traditional therapy plus 1.

This prospective study aimed to assess incidence, and risk factorss of HCC following DAA therapy in patients with HCV-related advanced fibrosis (F3) and cirrhosis (F4).
Methods: Incidence of HCC was calculated in 1,630 patients with HCV-related F3 and F4 treated with DAA prospectively followed for up to 43 months in a single tertiary referral center and compared to historical controls.
Introduction: Elevated serum interleukin (IL) 6 has been reported in patients infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV), but it remains debatable whether this influences the production of autoantibodies and the biochemical profile of HCV disease. Therefore, this current study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between IL-6 and circulating autoantibody levels in HCV positive patients. Methods: Levels of IL-6 in serum samples from 102 patients with HCV and 103 normal controls were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Methods: A total of 651 individuals from Lower Egypt (55 children and 596 adults) were examined for S. mansoni ova by microscopic stool examination (MSE) alone (n=166; 111 adults and 55 children), rectal biopsy (RB) alone (n=32 adults), or both MSE and RB (n=453 adults).
Background/aims: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and the immunomodulatory effect of rifaximin as another promising prophylactic therapy against spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in cirrhotics.
Materials And Methods: Seventy cirrhotic patients with ascites were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups in a randomized single-blind fashion.
Background. Iatrogenic biliary injuries are considered as the most serious complications during cholecystectomy. Better outcomes of such injuries have been shown in cases managed in a specialized center.

Forty cirrhotic patients with ascites were included in the study. Patients were randomized into four groups in a blind fashion; each group consists of ten patients.

Current diagnostic techniques to distinguish benign from malignant biliary disease are unsatisfactory. Metabolic profiling of bile may help to differentiate benign from malignant disease.

LF results from chronic damage to the liver in conjunction with the accumulation of ECM proteins. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their specific inhibitors (TIMPs) are thought to play an essential role in the hepatic lesions.

It has been shown that Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) plays an important role in chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and gastric malignancies, and its eradication has been advocated.

Ammonia toxicity and bacterial endotoxins have been suggested as key determinants of HE onset whereas a role for Helicobacter pylori infection has not been established. We investigated the correlation between H.

It is well established that interferon-a (IFNa) treatment for HCV may trigger serum autoantibodies against pancreatic islet cells (ICA) in a subgroup of patients. Available data on the incidence of ICA during IFNa therapy for chronic HCV4 infection are not conclusive.

Laminin (LA) has been related to liver fibrosis and subsequent development of portal hypertension in chronic liver disease. There are no available data describing the pattern of laminin in combined HCV and schistosoma-infected patients, thus the rationale of this study was to assess the serum LA as an index of liver fibrosis in patients with schistosomiasis and/or chronic viral hepatitis C and to evaluate a developed Slot-Blot Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbant Assay (Slot-Blot-ELISA) as a method of estimation.

Hepatitis C has emerged as a major worldwide public health problem. The host immune response to HCV infection is composed of both a non-specific immune response, including interferon (IFN) production and natural killer (NK) cell activity, and a virus-specific immune response, including humoral and cellular components. Susceptibility to infection has been related to immunological disturbances.

Patients coinfected with HCV and schistosomiasis exhibit a unique clinical, virological and histological pattern manifested by viral persistence with high HCV RNA titers as well as higher necroinflammatory and fibrosis scores in their liver biopsy samples.

A predictable consequence of cholestasis is malabsorption of fat-soluble vitamins and free radical scavengers. On the other hand, it has been postulated that cholestasis affects polymorphonuclear leukocytes function by impeding chemotaxis, phagocytosis and superoxide anion release in experimental animals.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFSchistosoma mansoni infection is characterized by a strong T-helper type 2 (Th2) cell-associated immune response, but in the case of viral infection, it is associated with interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) increase and induction of Th1 immune response. Few data are available about the immune response of cases infected with combined hepatitis C virus (HCV) and schistosomiasis. Thus, the investigation of the cytokine pattern in patients coinfected with both HCV and Schistosoma mansoni was our rationale.

Some countries with a high prevalence of H. pylori infection have high gastric cancer rates, whereas in others these rates are low.

It may cause transient hemolysis and shortened erythrocyte life span as well as cytokine induction. An increase in lipid peroxidation has been noted as evidence of oxidative damage in red cells due to cholestasis.
