Introduction: Febrile neutropenia, an oncological complication related to myelosuppressive chemotherapy, can lead to unplanned hospitalization, morbidity, mortality, and changes in the oncological therapeutic plan. The present study aimed (1) to determine the prevalence of chemotherapy-induced febrile neutropenia requiring hospitalization and the use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and (2) to evaluate its consequences for the oncological treatment of patients with soft tissue or bone sarcomas.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional and retrospective study (January 2018 to December 2019) carried out in a reference oncology hospital in the Brazilian public health system.

In the present study, 28 immunosuppressed parkinsonian Macaca fascicularis were intracerebrally injected with wild-type or CTLA4-Ig transgenic porcine xenografts to identify a suitable strategy to enable long-term cell survival, maturation, and differentiation. Nine of 28 (32%) immunosuppressed primates developed masses compatible with PTLD, located mainly in the gastrointestinal tract and/or nasal cavity.

In fact, to date, postmortem histological analysis remains the main method used to characterize cell survival, maturation, differentiation, and absence of adverse effects upon intracerebral grafting. However, the increasing availability of sophisticated imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and spectroscopy offers the possibility to directly exploit anatomical and functional information coming from the grafted cells in vivo.

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) function as molecular chaperones involved in protein folding, transport and degradation and, in addition, they can promote cell survival both in vitro and in vivo after a range of stresses. Although some in vivo studies have suggested that HSP27 and HSP70 can be neuroprotective, current evidence is limited, particularly when HSPs have been delivered after an insult. Thapsigargin induced the highest NO production, a sevenfold increase as compared with untreated thymocytes, in mitochondrial and microsomal membranes. MPS and etoposide were equally effective in increasing NO production by mitochondrial membranes by a factor of 4-5, with only a slight increase in NO production by endoplasmic reticulum membranes.

Production of nitric oxide (NO) by mitochondrial membranes as methemoglobin formation sensitive to N(G)-methyl-l-arginine inhibition and mitochondrial O(2) consumption in metabolic states 3 and 4 and the respiratory control (state 3/state 4) were measured at early stages of rat thymocyte apoptosis. Programmed cell death was induced by addition of methylprednisolone and etoposide to thymocyte suspensions. Increased NO production by mitochondrial membranes was observed after 30 min of methylprednisolone and etoposide addition and was accompanied by mitochondrial respiratory impairment as an early phenomenon in apoptotic thymocytes.
