Introduction: Occult nodal disease (OND) during clinically-N0 salvage total laryngectomy (TL) can be detected with the Neck-Imaging-Reporting-and-Data-Systems (NI-RADS). However, some patients will still have OND revealed on final pathology.
Methods: A retrospective study on all patients who had OND during salvage TL with elective neck dissection (END) between 2009 and 2021 was performed.
T lymphocytes expressing CD57 and lacking costimulatory receptors CD27/CD28 have been reported to accumulate with aging, chronic infection, and cancer. These cells are described as senescent, with inability to proliferate but enhanced cytolytic and cytokine-producing capacity. However, robust functional studies on these cells taken directly from cancer patients are lacking.

Study Design: This retrospective case series with chart review included adult patients who underwent resection of malignant or benign tumors resulting in lateral facial, parotid, or temporal bone defects, which were reconstructed with SMIF.
Setting: A tertiary-care academic referral center.
Unilateral total maxillectomy is indicated for locally advanced maxillary tumors that require complete removal of the midface bony structure and inferior orbital rim. Reconstruction of this defect is challenging due to aesthetic and functional concerns. A retrospective review of patients at two tertiary-care institutions undergoing unilateral total maxillectomy reconstruction with a stacked fibula flap from 2018 to 2022 was performed.

Our purpose was to assess the potential utility of narrowband imaging (NBI) as a tool in diagnosing and treating unknown primary oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) in patients prior to diagnostic resection with transoral robotic surgery (TORS). Methods: Twenty-five patients with T4b OCSCC with pathologic masticator space invasion were treated with primary surgery from May 2012 to December 2016.
Objectives/hypothesis: For locally advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) treated by surgery and adjuvant therapy, consensus has yet to be reached on whether the optimal time to initiate surveillance positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scan is before or after adjuvant therapy. In this study, we characterize the utility of PET/CT scans obtained 3 months after adjuvant therapy.
Study Design: PET/CT scans were obtained for 220 patients with stage III, IVA, or IVB OSCC who underwent resection followed by adjuvant radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy.
Background: There is conflicting evidence regarding the role of peritumoral lymphatic vessel density (LVD) and blood microvessel density (MVD) in the metastasis and prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Existing studies are limited to one or two head and neck subsites and/or small sample sizes. A larger study incorporating multiple sub-sites is needed to address the role of peritumoral LVD and MVD in HNSCC metastasis and prognosis.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground And Purpose: Radiation (RT) dose to the central nervous system (CNS) has been implicated as a contributor to treatment-related fatigue in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients undergoing radiation therapy (RT). This study evaluates the association of RT dose to CNS structures with patient-reported (PRO) fatigue scores in a population of HNC patients.
Materials And Methods: At pre-RT (baseline), 6th week of RT, and 1-month post-RT time points, Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20) scores were prospectively obtained from 124 patients undergoing definitive treatment for HNC.
An estimated 200,000 deaths each year worldwide are due to cancer of the head and neck, mostly mucosal squamous cell carcinoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer. The status of surgical margins is important for prognosis and need for adjuvant therapy. We will discuss how margin status impacts outcomes and therapy, and the conundrum of determining margin status.

Importance: Previous studies of prognostic factors of carcinoma of the minor salivary gland (MSG) have been limited to single-institution studies and small case series. Thus, limited data are available to guide the head and neck oncologist in counseling patients on the prognosis and management of these malignant neoplasms.
Objective: To examine 5- and 10-year cause-specific survival (CSS) rates of MSG carcinomas across all histologic subtypes and head and neck tumor subsites.
Background: The Sonopet(®) ultrasonic bone aspirator (Stryker(®) , Kalamazoo, MI) has been used within neurosurgery, otolaryngology and in other fields, but to our knowledge has not been reported in the literature for use in endoscopic transsphenoidal approaches (TSAs) to the skull base. The study objective was to compare use of the ultrasonic bone aspirator (UBA) vs traditional cold steel instrumentation during TSA in terms of operative time and blood loss.
Methods: The study design was a prospective, randomized, single-blinded controlled clinical trial.
With the frequency of orthognathic surgery increasing each year, more is being learned about this surgical art. Although techniques are improving, more acute and chronic complications are being reported after orthognathic surgery. In our institution, it has been noticed that approximately 25% to 30% of our patients experience unilateral or bilateral otalgia after total (Le Fort I) maxillary osteotomy.
