CT of angioedema of the small bowel.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the added diagnostic value of CT for the diagnosis of visceral angioedema.

Conclusion: Thickening of the small-bowel wall and mucosa with increased contrast enhancement, depiction of more layers of the small-bowel wall than normal, prominent mesenteric vessels, ascites, and fluid accumulation in the small bowel or together in the small bowel and the colon were the most significant CT findings in three patients with visceral angioedema. Findings appear to be transient.

Hepatobiliary cystadenoma with mesenchymal stroma mimicking hydatid cyst. Report of a case.

We report on a case of hepatobiliary cystadenoma with mesenchymal stroma in a 44-year-old Caucasian woman who presented with upper abdominal discomfort. Ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT) showed a cystic mass resembling hydatid cyst. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) demonstrated communication with the left hepatic duct.

Leiomyoma of the right common iliac vein presenting as a duodenal tumour.

A case of vascular leiomyoma originating from the wall of the right common iliac vein is presented. Clinical and radiological features suggested a well circumscribed tumour arising from the duodenal wall. Laparotomy revealed a tumour without connection to the duodenum, but attached to the right iliac vein.

[Effects of significantly increased perinatal risks on developmental status in adolescence].

In a 13-years-catamnesis a sample of 50 children with severe perinatal risks was assessed with regard to their physical, cognitive and behavioral development; selective drop-outs were analysed. In accordance with the results of other prospective studies there are deficits in visual-motor functioning, higher rates of somatic complaints, social withdrawal and attention deficits; a large number of these children attend special schools. The study presents predicative relations between risk factors of birth-time and the developmental status at youth.

Influence of asimadoline, a new kappa-opioid receptor agonist, on tubular water absorption and vasopressin secretion in man.

Aims: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of asimadoline, a new kappa-opioid agonist, on renal function and on hormones related to body fluid balance as well as its tolerability in healthy subjects.

Methods: In a placebo-controlled, randomised, double-blind crossover design we studied the effects of single oral doses of 1, 5, and 10 mg of asimadoline, in 24 healthy volunteers. Two hour control urine collections were followed by 2 h postdose urine collections and subsequently 2.

Choledochocele: diagnosis by magnetic resonance imaging.

The value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is demonstrated in a case of a 22-year-old female with a small choledochocele clinically presenting with acute cholecystitis and pancreatitis. Previous abdominal sonography and computed tomography were not diagnostic. MRI and MRCP showed a cystic dilatation of the distal common bile duct, intramurally located in the second portion of the duodenum and protruding into the duodenal lumen.

The value of medical imaging in uncomplicated and complicated Barrett's esophagus.

Barrett's esophagus is an acquired condition characterized by a progressive columnar metaplasia of the distal esophagus caused by longstanding gastroesophageal reflux and reflux esophagitis. Barrett's esophagus is a premalignant condition associated with a significantly increased risk of developing esophageal adenocarcinoma. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the radiologic aspects of Barrett's esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Inhibitors of Na-K-ATPase in human urine: effects of ouabain-like factors and of vanadium-diascorbate on calcium mobilization in rat vascular smooth muscle cells: comparison with the effects of ouabain, angiotensin II, and arginine-vasopressin.

Endogenous ouabain-like factors (OLF) may play a role in the pathogenesis of volume-dependent hypertension by raising intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i) as a consequence of inhibition of the sodium pump. In previous studies we described the presence of two low molecular (Mr approximately equals 400) inhibitors of Na-K-ATPase in human urine, ie, a more polar OLF-1 and a more apolar OLF-2. We subsequently identified the active compound in OLF-2 as vanadium (V(IV))-diascorbate (Mr 416).

Ley/H: an endothelial-selective, cytokine-inducible, angiogenic mediator.

Endothelial cells (ECs) are key participants in angiogenic processes that characterize tumor growth, wound repair, and inflammatory diseases, such as human rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We and others have shown that EC molecules, such as soluble E-selectin, mediate angiogenesis. Here we describe an EC molecule, Lewisy-6/H-5-2 glycoconjugate (Ley/H), that shares some structural features with the soluble E-selectin ligand, sialyl Lewisx (sialyl Lex).

Esophagobronchial fistula following redo Nissen fundoplication.

Gastrobronchial fistula is a rare complication of antireflux surgery, whereas esophagobronchial fistula as a complication of Nissen fundoplication has, to the best of our knowledge, not been reported previously. We report on a case of esophagobronchial fistula in a patient with left subphrenic abscess following redo Nissen fundoplication. Chest radiographs suggested an unresponsive pneumonia of the left lower lobe.

Liquid chromatography "on-flow" 1H nuclear magnetic resonance on native glycosphingolipid mixtures together with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry on the released oligosaccharides for screening and characterisation of carbohydrate-based antigens from pig lungs.

Glycosphingolipids were prepared from pig lung and pooled into two fractions with (i) < or = 3 sugar residues, and (ii) > or = 3 sugar residues. Oligosaccharides were prepared and used for gas chromatography, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry. The glycolipid fractions i and ii were further characterised and purified using a novel method based on high performance liquid chromatography "on-flow" proton nuclear magnetic resonance.

Radiographic manifestations of intestinal obstruction in the newborn.

Intestinal obstruction in the newborn infant may be due to a variety of conditions, including atresia and stenosis, annular pancreas, malrotation, duplication cyst, meconium ileus, meconium plug syndrome and neonatal small left colon syndrome, and Hirschsprung's disease. Neonates with unrecognised intestinal obstruction deteriorate rapidly, show an increase of associated morbidity and appropriate surgical treatment becomes more hazardous. Early diagnosis depends largely on the prompt detection of obstructive manifestations by the clinician and the subsequent accurate interpretation of radiographic findings by the radiologist.

Intestinal stenosis from mesenteric injury after blunt abdominal trauma.

We report a case in which blunt abdominal trauma resulted in injury to the mesentery with subsequent ischemic stricture of the adjacent small bowel. We present CT images at the time of trauma and 5 weeks later when clinical signs of intestinal obstruction occurred. We include images of enteroclysis and angiography of this uncommon sequela of blunt abdominal trauma.

Polypoid and pseudopolypoid lesions of inflammatory bowel disease: diagnosis on double-contrast enema.

The radiological and pathological features of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are well known for most radiologists and gastroenterologists but on double-contrast enema, polypoid and pseudopolypoid manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often remain a source of major confusion. Inflammatory polyps project above the level of the surrounding mucosa. Pseudopolyposis is seen when extensive ulceration of the mucosa down to the submucosa results in scattered circumscribed islands of relatively normal mucosal remnants.

The renal endothelin system in the Prague hypertensive rat, a new model of spontaneous hypertension.

In a new model of spontaneous hypertension, namely the Prague hypertensive rat (PHR), hypertension is transferred with a kidney transplanted from the PHR to its normotensive counterpart (PNR) by an as yet unknown mechanism. One candidate may be endothelin (ET), since this potent vasoconstrictor affects vascular tone, renal haemodynamics and renal excretory function, and all members of this peptide family are located within the kidney and act in an autocrine/paracrine fashion. In the present study we investigated, in the renal tissue of PHRs and PNRs: (1) preproET-1 and preproET-3 mRNAs as well as ET-1 and ET-3 peptide distribution, (2) endothelin-converting enzyme (ECE)-1 mRNA expression, and (3) ET receptors and their characteristics in membranes of glomeruli and papillae.

Unusual location of an ovary: ultrasonographic features and surgical correlation.

We present a case of ectopic ovary in a 5-month-old baby presenting a firm nodule in the left labia majora. Ultrasonography was performed and revealed an ectopic ovary. The ectopic ovary was surgically returned in adnexial location.

Diagnosis and nonsurgical management of bile leak complicated by biloma after blunt liver injury: report of two cases.

We report on two patients with biliary tract injury and associated biloma following blunt abdominal trauma. Both patients underwent emergency surgery because of hemodynamic instability and bloody peritoneal aspiration. Computed tomography in the postoperative days showed severe hepatic parenchymal injury and the presence of hypodense collections with intraparenchymal and subcapsular extension, suggestive for biloma, but otherwise failed to demonstrate the exact location of the bile duct injury.

Effects of urinary ouabain-like factors and vanadium diascorbate on calcium mobilization in porcine inner medullary collecting duct cells: comparison with the effects of ouabain and vasopressin.

It is speculated that ouabain-like factors (OLF) play a role in the pathogenesis of volume-dependent hypertension. In previous studies we isolated a more polar OLF-1 and a more apolar OLF-2 from the urine of healthy subjects after 5 days on a high sodium intake (>400 mmol/day) by gel chromatography (Sephadex G-25 and G-10) and reverse-phase HPLC. We subsequently identified the chemical structure of OLF-2 as vanadium (V(IV)) diascorbate.

Who reads temporal information contained across synchronized and oscillatory spike trains?

Our inferences about brain mechanisms underlying perception rely on whether it is possible for the brain to 'reconstruct' a stimulus from the information contained in the spike trains from many neurons. How the brain actually accomplishes this reconstruction remains largely unknown. Oscillatory and synchronized activities in the brain of mammals have been correlated with distinct behavioural states or the execution of complex cognitive tasks and are proposed to participate in the 'binding' of individual features into more complex percepts.

Ouabain-like factors in human urine: identification of a Na-K-ATPase inhibitor as vanadium-diascorbate adduct.

We investigated endogenous Na-K-ATPase inhibitors, i.e. ouabain-like factors(OLFs), in the urine of salt-loaded healthy subjects.

Rapid and sensitive GC/MS characterization of glycolipid released Galalpha1,3Gal-terminated oligosaccharides from small organ specimens of a single pig.

Pig to human xenotransplantation is considered a possible solution to the prevailing chronic lack of human donor organs for allotransplantation. The Galalpha1,3Gal determinant is the major porcine xenogeneic epitope causing hyperacute rejection following human antibody binding and complement activation. In order to characterize the tissue distribution of Galalpha1,3Gal-containing and blood group-type glycosphingolipids in pig, acid and nonacid glycosphingolipids were isolated from the kidney, small intestine, spleen, salivary gland, liver, and heart of a single pig obtained from a semi-inbred strain homozygous at the SLA locus.

Desmoplastic small round cell tumour of unknown primary origin with lymph node and lung metastases: histological, cytological, ultrastructural, cytogenetic and molecular findings.

Desmoplastic small round cell tumour (DSRCT) is an extremely aggressive neoplasm belonging to the family of "small round blue cell tumours", which includes primitive neuroectodermal tumour (PNET), Wilms' tumour and Ewing's sarcoma. DSRCT is considered to be a neoplasm derived from a primitive cell. It is immunohistochemically reactive with epithelial, neuronal and mesenchymal cell markers, demonstrating divergent differentiation along three cell lines.
