Stressful events can have lasting and impactful effects on behavior, especially by disrupting normal regulation of fear and reward processing. Accurate discrimination among environmental cues predicting threat, safety or reward adaptively guides behavior. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) represents a condition in which maladaptive fear persists in response to explicit safety-predictive cues that coincide with previously learned threat cues, but without threat being present.

While readily produced using intense multiphoton excitation of water and/or irradiation with high-energy particles, the possible role of solvated electrons in electrochemical and photoelectrochemical reactions at electrodes has been controversial. Recent studies showed that excitation of electrons to the conduction band of diamond leads to barrier-free emission of electrons into water.

Background And Aims: The objectives were to evaluate the relationship between ketogenic diets, the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), parameters known to increase risk for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in both sexes, using a pre-clinical model of obesity.
Methods And Results: Rats had access to a diet high in fat and sugar (HFS) for 12 weeks. After HFS, they switched to chow (HFS-CH) or ketogenic diet (HFS-KD) for 3 weeks to model a dietary intervention.
Scientific progress depends on formulating testable hypotheses informed by the literature. In many domains, however, this model is strained because the number of research papers exceeds human readability. Here, we developed computational assistance to analyze the biomedical literature by reading PubMed abstracts to suggest new hypotheses.

Objectives: As part of the Strategies and Opportunities to STOP Colon Cancer (STOP CRC) study, we assessed the accuracy of EHR codes in identifying patients eligible for CRC screening.
Methods: We selected a stratified random sample of 800 study participants from 26 participating clinics, in the Pacific Northwest region of the USA.
It was hypothesized that the four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4F-PCC) Kcentra 25 unit/kg would reverse impairment of thrombin generation in healthy volunteers dosed with apixaban to steady state. In this randomized, two-period crossover, assessor-blinded trial, 12 healthy subjects received 5 mg apixaban every 12 h. Three h after the fifth dose, four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4F-PCC) 25 unit/kg or saline were infused.

The SC|EC interface affects the composite photoelectrode behavior but is poorly understood. We uncover the role of EC activity and SC|EC interface properties using a range of metal (Ni, Fe, Ni-Fe, Co, Ir) oxide or (oxy)hydroxide ECs deposited on model single-crystal n-TiO2 photoanodes.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the safety of conscious sedation in patients with OSA undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Patients And Methods: This is an IRB-approved prospective cohort study performed at the James A.
In vitro engineering of mechanically active tissues requires the presentation of physiologically relevant mechanical conditions to cultured cells. To emulate the dynamic environment of vocal folds, a novel vocal fold bioreactor capable of producing vibratory stimulations at fundamental phonation frequencies is constructed and characterized. The device is composed of a function generator, a power amplifier, a speaker selector and parallel vibration chambers.

To address this problem, we implemented the Evolutionary Trace Annotation (ETA) method in the Cytoscape network visualization environment. The result is the ETAscape plugin, which builds a structural genomics network based on local structural and evolutionary similarities among proteins and then globally diffuses known annotations across the resulting network.

Diverse computational methods address this problem by pointing to the existence of recurrent patterns among sequence, structure, and function. These patterns emerge naturally from evolutionary variation, natural selection, and divergence--the defining features of biological systems--and they identify molecular events and shapes that underlie specificity of function and allosteric communication.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFSpecimen mammograms are often a time-consuming event for image-guided surgery. The use of an intraoperative imaging device may improve the speed of surgery, but comparison must be made to ensure accuracy is maintained. One hundred fifty consecutive image localized patients underwent both intraoperative digital specimen mammogram (in the operating room) and standard specimen mammogram (in radiology).

There is a need for a device that can accurately depict the CBE in digital format while being objective, reproducible over time, and useable in the electronic medical record. This new device is called palpation imaging (PI).

Cryoablation is a new treatment that combines the better attributes of the current standards: surveillance and surgery. It is a minimally invasive office-based procedure that is administered without the use of general anesthesia, involving minimal patient discomfort and little to no scarring.

Methods: Twenty-five patients requiring image-guided surgery were localized with an encircling guidewire. Although the deployed wire is circular, it is straight when placed, using a straight outer needle.
Background: The frequency of nonpalpable breast cancer has doubled in the last 10 years. Surgical use of high quality portable ultrasound units has made it possible to evaluate the time-saving method of intraoperative ultrasonography localization.
Methods: Ultrasonography localization in the operating room immediately prior to definitive surgery was performed by the surgeon.
Background: Mammogram-directed wire localization for nonpalpable cancer requires surgeon's time and coordination and some patient discomfort. Up to half of these nonpalpable lesions can be visualized by ultrasound. Use of intraoperative ultrasound streamlines the process of image-guided surgery.

Alternatives to open surgery include tumor removal using an automated coring device and tumor ablation using heating or cooling elements. We report our initial experience with cryoablation of biopsy-proven benign fibroadenomas.
