Article Synopsis
  • Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) affects 1-3% of newborns, with 20% having bilateral cases; the best surgical approach for severe cases that don't respond to non-surgical methods is unclear.
  • The study will conduct a systematic review to analyze existing literature on surgical options (medial vs. anterior approach) for bilateral DDH, using comprehensive search strategies and assessment criteria.
  • Current studies lack high-quality comparative data to guide treatment decisions for bilateral DDH, thus emphasizing the importance of this systematic review in filling the knowledge gap.

Because of its impressive ability to promote pharmaceutical activity, the introduction of trifluoromethylacyl (CFCO) functionality into organic compounds has become an important and growing research area. Although various protocols have been developed to access trifluoroketones, the use of trifluoroacetyl radicals remains virtually undeveloped. Herein, we disclose a novel method for trifluoroacetylation through an umpolung reagent, thereby transforming an electrophilic radical into a nucleophilic radical.

Trapezoidal integration by linear interpolation of data points is by far the most commonly used method of cumulative flux calculations of nitrous oxide (NO) in studies that use flux chambers; however, this method is incapable of providing accurate uncertainty estimates. A Bayesian approach was used to calculate NO emission factors (EFs) and their associated uncertainties from flux chamber measurements made after the application of nitrogen fertilisers, in the form of ammonium nitrate (AN), urea (Ur) and urea treated with Agrotain® urease inhibitor (UI) at four grassland sites in the UK. The comparison between the cumulative fluxes estimated using the Bayesian and linear interpolation methods were broadly similar (R = 0.

Research has shown that infants are able to track a moving target efficiently - even if it is transiently occluded from sight. This basic ability allows prediction of when and where events happen in everyday life. Yet, it is unclear whether, and how, infants internally represent the of ongoing movements to derive predictions.

Aims: Following the introduction of national standards in 2009, most major paediatric trauma is now triaged to specialist units offering combined orthopaedic and plastic surgical expertise. We investigated the management of open tibia fractures at a paediatric trauma centre, primarily reporting the risk of infection and rate of union.

Patients And Methods: A retrospective review was performed on 61 children who between 2007 and 2015 presented with an open tibia fracture.

Background: We aimed to determine if a modified Dunn osteotomy could be safely performed without surgical dislocation and consequent preservation of the ligamentum teres.

Methods: All patients undergoing a modified Dunn osteotomy for a slipped capital femoral epiphysis over an 8-year period were included in this study, and all had a severe slip with an open physis.

Results: The modified Dunn procedure was performed on 34 hips in 34 patients.

Infants possess the remarkable capacity to perceive occluded movements as ongoing and coherent. Little is known about the neural mechanisms that enable internal representation of conspecifics' and inanimate objects' movements during visual occlusion. In this study, 10-month-old infants watched briefly occluded human and object movements.

Background: Morquio-Brailsford syndrome or mucopolysaccharidosis type IV-A (MPS IV-A) is an inherited metabolic disease in which skeletal deformities can be extreme. An international registry has shown that 46% of patients are unable to walk 200 m and 30% use a wheelchair. Lower limb surgery is performed to restore alignment with the expectation of maintaining mobility.

The aim of this study was to determine whether an osteoplasty of the femoral neck performed at the same time as an intertrochanteric Imhäuser osteotomy led to an improved functional outcome or increased morbidity. A total of 20 hips in 19 patients (12 left, 8 right, 13 male, 6 female), who underwent an Imhäuser intertrochanteric osteotomy following a slipped capital femoral epiphysis were assessed over an eight-year period. A total of 13 hips in 13 patients had an osteoplasty of the femoral neck at the same time.

Background: Musculoskeletal involvement in Morquio A syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis IVA; MPS IVA) contributes significantly to morbidity and mortality. While the spinal manifestations of the disorder have received considerable attention in the literature, there have been few reported studies to date to guide the management of the orthopedic problems associated with the lower and upper extremities.

Purpose: The objective was to develop recommendations for the management of the extremities in patients with Morquio A syndrome.

Regulatory authorities require safety and potency testing prior to the release of each production lot of acellular pertussis (aP)-containing vaccines. Currently, the murine histamine sensitization test (HIST) is used to evaluate the presence of residual pertussis toxin in aP containing vaccines. However, the testing requires the use of a significant number of mice and results in unrelieved pain and distress.

The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI), the Nederlands Vaccin Instituut (NVI) and the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM) organised the international scientific workshop "Animal free Detection of Pertussis Toxin in Vaccines--Alternatives to the Histamine Sensitisation Test" at the PEI in Langen (Germany) on 09-10 June 2011. Twenty-seven experts (regulators, representatives from national control laboratories, vaccine manufacturers and academia) from 7 countries participated in this workshop. The meeting was triggered by the lack of satisfaction with the current safety testing for acellular pertussis vaccines, the "Histamine Sensitisation Test" (HIST) in mice, and the growing attention for the alternatives under development.

Pertussis Toxin (PTx) is one of the most important virulence factors of Bordetella pertussis, the cause of whooping cough. Therefore, the inactivated toxin is an obligatory constituent of acellular pertussis vaccines. It is described in the literature that both native PTx and recombinant Pertussis Toxin (PTg) activate human monocytes whereas others report an inhibition of mammalian monocytes during pertussis infection.

Today, sterility of parenteral drugs is practically guaranteed. Well-defined procedures in the pharmaceutical industry enable effective protection against contamination by bacteria and fungi. In contrast, problems regarding microbial safety of advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs), especially of cell therapeutics, are at best only partially solved.

Salter's innominate osteotomy may predispose to anterior over-coverage of the acetabulum. Over cover or retroversion has been demonstrated to be a cause of hip pain, impingement and subsequent osteoarthritis. We reviewed the long-term follow up of seventeen skeletally mature hips in sixteen patients who had previously undergone a Salter's osteotomy in childhood.

Background: When closed reduction of a developmental dislocation of the hip fails, some form of open reduction is required. In recent years, the many advantages of the medial approach open reduction have been emphasized. However, there have been suggestions that the rate of growth disturbance in the proximal femur and the requirement for secondary surgical procedures may be higher with this route than with others.
