Awake craniotomy and electrophysiological mapping for eloquent area tumours.

Objective: An awake craniotomy facilitates radical excision of eloquent area gliomas and ensures neural integrity during the excision. The study describes our experience with 67 consecutive awake craniotomies for the excision of such tumours.

Methods: Sixty-seven patients with gliomas in or adjacent to eloquent areas were included in this study.

Postrenal transplant laryngeal and visceral leishmaniasis - A case report and review of the literature.

Visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) is a disease caused by protozoa of genus Leishmania. It is currently regarded as the second most dreaded parasitic disease, next to malaria. There have been very few case reports of visceral leishmaniasis among the renal transplant recipients.

Synthesis and biological evaluation of new piplartine analogues as potent aldose reductase inhibitors (ARIs).

As a continuation of our efforts directed towards the development of anti-diabetic agents from natural sources, piplartine was isolated from Piper chaba, and was found to inhibit recombinant human ALR2 with an IC(50) of 160 μM. To improve the efficacy, a series of analogues have been synthesized by modification of the styryl/aromatic and heterocyclic ring functionalities of this natural product lead. All the derivatives were tested for their ALR2 inhibitory activity, and results indicated that adducts 3c, 3e and 2j prepared by the Michael addition of piplartine with indole derivatives displayed potent ARI activity, while the other compounds displayed varying degrees of inhibition.

Diffuse mesangial sclerosis - Report of two cases.

Diffuse mesangial sclerosis (DMS) is a rare cause of nephrotic syndrome in the infantile and childhood period. DMS is a phenotypic expression of syndromic entities such as WAGR syndrome (Wilms' tumor, aniridia, genitourinary anomalies and mental retardation), Denys Drash syndrome, Pierson syndrome, Frasier syndrome, or Galloway-Mowat syndrome. We report two cases of DMS, one presenting in first year of life and another in second decade of life.

Distribution of potentially pathogenic enteric bacteria in coastal sea waters along the Southern Kerala Coast, India.

This study evaluated the relationship between the traditional indicators of faecal pollution, total coliforms (TC), faecal coliforms (FC) and Faecalstreptococci (FS), and the presence of few potentially pathogenic enteric bacteria, Vibrio cholerae (VC), Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VP), Shigella spp. (SH) and Salmonella spp. (SL) in coastal sea water.

Synthesis of compounds related to the anti-migraine drug eletriptan hydrobromide.

Eletriptan hydrobromide (1) is a selective serotonin (5-HT(1)) agonist, used for the acute treatment of the headache phase of migraine attacks. During the manufacture of eletriptan hydrobromide the formation of various impurities were observed and identified by LC-MS. To control the formation of these impurities during the preparation of active pharmaceutical ingredients, the structure of the impurities must be known.

B-L violating proton decay modes and new baryogenesis scenario in SO(10).

We show that grand unified theories based on SO(10) generate quite naturally baryon number violating dimension seven operators that violate B-L, and lead to novel nucleon decay modes such as n→e(-)K(+), e(-)π(+) and p→νπ(+). We find that in two-step breaking schemes of nonsupersymmetric SO(10), the partial lifetimes for these modes can be within reach of experiments. The interactions responsible for these decay modes also provide a new way to understand the origin of matter in the Universe via the decays of grand unified theory (GUT) scale scalar bosons of SO(10).

Mitigation of endometriosis using regenerative cerium oxide nanoparticles.

Unlabelled: Cerium oxide nanoparticles (nanoceria) have recently received attention from the scientific community due to their unique free radicals (specially superoxide radical and hydrogen peroxide) scavenging property in biological system, both in vitro and in vivo. It is suggested that free radicals play an important role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. In this study we have shown that nanoceria mitigate the endometrial lesions induced in mice model by decreasing oxidative stress and inhibiting angiogenesis.

Characterization and catalytic activity of gold nanoparticles synthesized using ayurvedic arishtams.

The development of new synthesis methods for monodispersed nanocrystals using cheap and nontoxic chemicals, environmentally benign solvents and renewable materials remains a challenge to the scientific community. The present work reports a new green method for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles. Four different ayurvedic arishtams are used for the reduction of Au(3+) to Au nanoparticles.

Uterine closure in cesarean delivery: a new technique.

Fear of scar rupture is one of risks involved in a post caesarean pregnancy. This had led to an increased rate of repeat cesarean delivery in today's times. Closure of the uterine incision is a key step in cesarean section, and it is imperative that an optimal surgical technique be employed for closing a uterine scar.

Influence of quercetin on the pharmacokinetics of ranolazine in rats and in vitro models.

The aim of our study was to enhance the bioavailability of ranolazine by using herbal-bioenhancer quercetin in rats and to study the role of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in vitro models. In single dose study (SDS), rats were divided into four groups, Group I was treated with 0.5% sodium carboxy methyl cellulose (SCMC), Group II was treated with ranolazine (14 mg/kg), Group III was treated with quercetin (20 mg/kg) and Group IV was treated with both ranolazine and quercetin.

Aim: To report a unique presentation of 3rd and 6th cranial nerve palsies with nodular scleritis and nummular keratouveitis following an attack of herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO).

Novel C-9, 9'-O-acyl esters of (-)-carinol as free-radical scavengers and xanthine oxidase enzyme inhibitors: synthesis and biological evaluation.

New compounds with hydrophyllic esters of (-)-carinol were synthesized and evaluated as xanthine oxidase enzyme inhibitors and antioxidants. Aliphatic esterfication of C-9,9'-OH groups of (-)-carinol resulted in lowering antioxidant and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activities. However certain aromatic acyl esters considerably improved the xathine oxidase inhibition.

Type II First Branchial Cleft Cyst: A Case Report with Review of Literature.

We report a rare case of type II first branchial cleft cyst that presented as an intraparotid cyst. Rarity and varied presentations of the first branchial cleft cysts have led to frequent misdiagnosis. High index of suspicion is required.

Background: Chrysin and its analogues, belongs to flavonoid family and possess potential anti-tumour activity. The aim of this study is to determine the molecular mechanism by which chrysin controls cell growth and induce apoptosis in A375 cells.

Methods: Effect of chrysin and its analogues on cell viability and cell cycle analysis was determined by MTT assay and flowcytometry.

Epigenetic regulation of ABCG2 gene is associated with susceptibility to xenobiotic exposure.

A highly conserved defence mechanism has evolved to protect cells from oxidative stress and xenobiotic exposure. A network of coupled xenobiotic metabolizing enzymatic reactions (XMEs) converts free oxidative radicals to less damaging metabolites, while efflux pumps remove toxins and XME derivatives from the cell. These mechanisms have been well studied in the contexts of hypoxia and Multidrug Resistance (MDR).

Recombinant Factor VIIa in Post-partum Hemorrhage: A New Weapon in Obstetrician's Armamentarium.

Post-partum hemorrhage (PPH) is a life-threatening obstetric complication and the leading cause of maternal death. The usual manner for its management includes, first, noninvasive and nonsurgical methods, and, then invasive and surgical methods. However, mortality and morbidity related to PPH still remains unacceptably high, contributing to hysterectomy in at least 50% of cases.

Outcomes of disconnective surgery in intractable pediatric hemispheric and subhemispheric epilepsy.

Objectives: To study the outcome of disconnective epilepsy surgery for intractable hemispheric and sub-hemispheric pediatric epilepsy.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of the epilepsy surgery database was done in all children (age <18 years) who underwent a peri-insular hemispherotomy (PIH) or a peri-insular posterior quadrantectomy (PIPQ) from April 2000 to March 2011. All patients underwent a detailed pre surgical evaluation.

Toxicity of energy drinks.

Purpose Of Review: 'Energy drinks', 'energy shots' and other energy products have exploded in popularity in the past several years; however, their use is not without risk. Caffeine is the main active ingredient in energy drinks, and excessive consumption may acutely cause caffeine intoxication, resulting in tachycardia, vomiting, cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, and death. The effects of chronic high-dose caffeine intake in children and adolescents are unknown.

Density functional study of electronic, bonding, and vibrational properties of Ca(NH2BH3)2.

We present structural, electronic, bonding and vibrational properties of new type hydrogen storage material calcium amidoborane Ca(NH(2)BH(3))(2) by first principles density functional theory using plane wave pseudopotential method. The calculated ground state properties are in good agreement with experiments. The computed Bulk modulus of Ca(NH(2)BH(3))(2) is found to be 28.

The herbal marijuana alternatives, like K2 or Spice, are a group of herbal blends that contain a mixture of plant matter in addition to chemical grade synthetic cannabinoids. The synthetic cathinones, commonly called "bath salts," have resulted in nationwide emergency department visits for severe agitation, sympathomimetic toxicity, and death.

Morphometric analysis of Kunderu river basin, Kurnool district, A.P, India for watershed management.

Morphometric analysis has been carried out to assess the drainage characteristics of Kunderu river basin of India. The basin is mostly dendritic to subdendritic in nature. Bifurcation ratio of successive orders has shown a gradual decrease from one order to next and this is attributed to differences in rock types and stage of development.
