The formation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in dry-cured ham is a result of different biochemical and enzymatic processes. Moreover, accurately quantifying these VOCs is challenging since ham is a complex matrix, which contains compounds from various chemical families and a wide range of volatilities of different molecular masses. In this study, we systematically optimized and validated an analytical method for quantifying VOCs in dry-cured ham using headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

Node centrality is one of the most frequently revisited network theoretical concepts, which got many calculation method alternatives, each of them being conceived on different empirical or theoretical network abstractions. The vast majority of centrality measures produced up to date were conceived on static network abstractions (the so-called "snapshot" networks), which arguably are less realistic than dynamic (temporal) network abstractions. The new, temporal node centrality measure that we offer with this article, is based on an uncommon abstraction, of a space-time network derived from service schedules (timetables).

Purpose: To describe uveitis-glaucoma-hyphema (UGH) syndrome secondary to a posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL) within the capsular bag in which pathogenic changes to the ciliary body were observed and treated with endocyclophotocoagulation (ECP).

Observations: An 85-year-old woman who had cataract surgery in her right eye four years ago presented with recurrent, unilateral, open-angle, hypertensive uveitis in her right eye. Her presentations were characterized by decreased vision, elevated intraocular pressure, corneal edema, a mixed anterior chamber reaction, and pigmented anterior vitreous cells.

As part of the Dynamics-Aerosol-Chemistry-Cloud Interactions in West Africa (DACCIWA) project, extensive in-situ measurements of the southern West African atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) have been performed at three supersites Kumasi (Ghana), Savè (Benin) and Ile-Ife (Nigeria) during the 2016 monsoon period (June and July). The measurements were designed to provide data for advancing our understanding of the relevant processes governing the formation, persistence and dissolution of nocturnal low-level stratus clouds and their influence on the daytime ABL in southern West Africa. An extensive low-level cloud deck often forms during the night and persists long into the following day strongly influencing the ABL diurnal cycle.

Purpose Of The Study: To present the first documented case of an ocular gossypiboma (retained foreign body) of a mitomycin-C-soaked sponge confirmed echographically using diagnostic ultrasound B-scan after Ahmed valve surgery.

Patients And Methods: A patient who underwent phacoemulsification with Ahmed valve implantation surgery had a retained Weck-Cels sponge soaked with mitomycin-C. With the use of ocular ultrasound B-scan, the retained sponge was localized and a second procedure was performed to explant it.

Nodule bacteria (rhizobia) in symbiotic associations with legumes enable considerable entries of biologically fixed nitrogen into soil. Efforts are therefore made to intensify the natural process of symbiotic nitrogen fixation by legume inoculation. Studies of field populations of rhizobia open up the possibility to preserve and probably exploit some indigenous strains with hidden symbiotic or ecological potentials.

Purpose: To describe the anatomic and clinical results of the treatment of severe plateau iris syndrome with lens extraction and endoscopic cycloplasty (ECPL). A secondary aim was to describe 4 novel ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) measurements for plateau iris syndrome.

Design: Prospective case series with UBM evaluation.

Sinorhizobium meliloti is a nitrogen-fixing rhizobium symbiont of legumes, widespread in many temperate environments the high genetic diversity of which enables it to thrive as a symbiont of host legumes and free-living in soil. Soil type, together with geographic differences and host plant genotype, seem to be prominent factors in shaping rhizobial genetic diversity. While a large body of research supports the idea that the genetic structure of free-living microbial taxa exhibits a clear biogeographic pattern, few investigations have been performed on the biogeographic pattern of S.

Inoculation of leguminous seeds with selected rhizobial strains is practised in agriculture to ameliorate the plant yield by enhanced root nodulation and nitrogen uptake of the plant. However, effective symbiosis between legumes and rhizobia does not only depend on the capacity of nitrogen fixation but also on the entire nitrogen turnover in the rhizosphere. We investigated the influence of seed inoculation with two indigenous Sinorhizobium meliloti strains exhibiting different efficiency concerning plant growth promotion on nitrogen turnover processes in the rhizosphere during the growth of alfalfa.

The performance of extractant impregnated resin (EIR) technology for chiral separation of amino-alcohols has been investigated. Phenylglycinol was selected as an archetype model enantiomer and azophenolic crown ether was used as a versatile enantioselective extractant. 1-Phenyloctane was selected as a suitable solvent for this application because of its very low solubility in water.

In the process of generating the cells that populate the sheep's B-cell pool, the ileal Peyer's patch (PP) produces an immense number of B-cells and then destroys most of them by apoptosis. Rapid clearance of these apoptotic cells is essential for tissue homeostasis and for preventing pathology. Macrophages comprise a small percentage of cells in the follicles.

Archaeologists, in most cases, neglect animal bones and teeth, which present common material on archaeological sites. Analysis of archaeozoological material from Vucedol (Baden culture) and prehistoric cave site Vela spila on Korcula, has been applied to stress the importance of that material (especially single animal teeth) in archaeozoological samples. It is obvious that a higher percentage of single teeth influence the number of identified animal species on particular sites.

Reversible inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase improve spatial learning and memory in animal models of cognitive impairment. Here we investigate if the beneficial effects of free radical scavenger N-tert-butyl-alpha-phenylnitrone (PBN) on cognitive performance could be explained by its recently discovered anticholinesterase activity. Morris water maze experiment was performed to examine the effect of PBN on the impairment of spatial learning and memory induced by the antagonist of cholinergic muscarinic transmission scopolamine.

Synaptotagmins (Syts) I and IV are synaptic proteins involved in the regulation of neurosecretion. Dopaminergic drugs have been shown to modulate their expression. Here we investigate whether dopaminergic regulation of syt I and syt IV expression could play a role in the hypersensitive striatum of rats with unilateral lesions of dopaminergic nigrostriatal neurons with 6-hydroxydopamine.

Cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMVR) is a common opportunistic infection and a major cause of blindness in patients with AIDS. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency, clinical course and outcome of CMVR in patients treated at the University Hospital of Infectious Diseases "Dr. Fran Mihaljević" in Zagreb in the period from January 1995 to April 1996.

Flavin, oxidative and hydrolytic enzyme activity in the Togenburg, Sana and Balkan engrafted kid breeds, skin from the back, abdomen and leg areas was investigated. The strongest activity of the enzymes was found in the connective tissue, muscular tissue cells and sebaceous glands while the weaker activity was found in epidermis and hair follicle cells. Those are slight differences in the activity of the investigated enzymes among kid groups in the investigated part of the body.
