Brown and Beige Adipose Tissue: One or Different Targets for Treatment of Obesity and Obesity-Related Metabolic Disorders?

The failure of the fight against obesity makes us turn to new goals in its treatment. Now, brown adipose tissue has attracted attention as a promising target for the treatment of obesity and associated metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and glucose tolerance disorders. Meanwhile, the expansion of our knowledge has led to awareness about two rather different subtypes: classic brown and beige (inducible brown) adipose tissue.

Solidified Salt Melts of the NaCl-KCl-CeF-EuF System as Promising Luminescent Materials.

This study presents the results of investigating the interaction between the CeF₃-EuF₃ system and the NaCl-KCl salt melt using spectroscopic methods. It was found that CeF₃ ions undergo no significant changes upon dissolution in the NaCl-KCl melt. In contrast, the dissolution of EuF₃, both individually and within the CeF₃-EuF₃ system, is accompanied by redox reactions leading to the formation of Eu⁺.

Model for Predicting the Effect of Sibutramine Therapy in Obesity.

The development of models predicting response to weight loss therapy using sibutramine is found in only a few cases. The objective of the work is to develop a data-driven method of personalized recommendation for obesity treatment that would predict the response to sibutramine based on the current set of patient parameters. The decision system is built on the XGBoost classification algorithm along with recursive feature selection and Shapley data valuation.

Role of Brown Adipose Tissue in Metabolic Health and Efficacy of Drug Treatment for Obesity.

(1) : Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is responsible for non-shivering thermogenesis, and its activation has become a new object as both a determinant of metabolic health and a target for therapy. This study aimed to identify the relationships between the presence of BAT, parameters that characterize metabolic health (glucose, lipids, blood pressure (BP)), and the dynamics of body mass index (BMI) during weight-reducing therapy. (2) : The study included 72 patients with obesity.

Complex trait susceptibilities and population diversity in a sample of 4,145 Russians.

The population of Russia consists of more than 150 local ethnicities. The ethnic diversity and geographic origins, which extend from eastern Europe to Asia, make the population uniquely positioned to investigate the shared properties of inherited disease risks between European and Asian ancestries. We present the analysis of genetic and phenotypic data from a cohort of 4,145 individuals collected in three metro areas in western Russia.

Effects of Chicory ( L.) Extract on Male Rat Reproductive System, Pregnancy and Offspring Development.

Background: We recently reported that extract prepared from the aerial part of L. (CE) possesses hepatoprotective, hypolipidemic, and hypoglycemic properties. This paper focuses on the effects of CE on the male rat reproductive system and the effects of this treatment on pregnancy and offspring development.

[Clinical guidelines for male infertility: controversial issues and the need to reach interdisciplinary consensus].

A review of controversial issues about the terminology on male infertility and reproductive function, which is currently used, as well as proposals for updating clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of male infertility and men in infertile couples are presented in the article. An algorithm is described, the elements of which ensure referral of patients based on the possibility and timing of restoration of reproductive function, taking into account the reproductive health of a woman, as well as increasing the likelihood of successful treatment aimed at the birth of a healthy child.

Global fine-resolution data on springtail abundance and community structure.

Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised.

Genetically encoded multimeric tags for subcellular protein localization in cryo-EM.

Cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) allows for label-free high-resolution imaging of macromolecular assemblies in their native cellular context. However, the localization of macromolecules of interest in tomographic volumes can be challenging. Here we present a ligand-inducible labeling strategy for intracellular proteins based on fluorescent, 25-nm-sized, genetically encoded multimeric particles (GEMs).

Modulation of Hepatic Functions by Chicory ( L.) Extract: Preclinical Study in Rats.

The liver is important in detoxifying organisms from xenobiotics, supporting immune functions, and metabolizing lipids and glucose. In addition, a growing number of drug-induced liver injuries and diseases associated with liver dysfunction make the development of phytodrugs targeting multiple liver functions particularly crucial. Therefore, we investigated the effects of a novel chicory extract prepared from aerial parts of the wild L.

Incoherent optical fluctuation flowmetry for detecting limbs with hemodynamically significant stenoses in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Introduction: The development of new highly accurate, inexpensive and accessible methods for the detection of lower-extremity peripheral artery disease (LE-PAD) in diabetic patients is required. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of a new incoherent optical fluctuation flowmetry (IOFF) method in detecting legs with hemodynamically significant stenoses compared to ankle brachial index (ABI) and transcutaneous oximetry (TcPO2) in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM).

Predictors of Carbohydrate Metabolism Disorders and Lethal Outcome in Patients after Myocardial Infarction: A Place of Glucose Level.

Background And Aim: The aim of this study was to reveal statistical patterns in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) that cause the development of carbohydrate metabolism disorders (CMD) (type 2 diabetes mellitus and prediabetes) and death within 5 years after AMI.

Methods: 1079 patients who were treated with AMI in the Almazov National Medical Research Center were retrospectively selected for the study. For each patient, all data from electronic medical records were downloaded.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between perfusion values measured by IOFF and TcPO2 in patients with diabetes-related lower-extremity complications. (2) Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional, two-center study.

Simple Predictors for Cardiac Fibrosis in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: The Role of Circulating Biomarkers and Pulse Wave Velocity.

Cardiac fibrosis is the basis of structural and functional disorders in patients with diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A wide range of laboratory and instrumental methods is used for its prediction. The study aimed to identify simple predictors of cardiac fibrosis in patients with T2DM based on the analysis of circulating fibrosis biomarkers and arterial stiffness.

Background: BACKGROUND: The basis for the management of transgender patients is the use of various hormonal correction schemes necessary for changing the hormonal sex and, possibly, further preparation for surgical correction. Currently, the choice of the starting dose and the scheme is carried out empirically, which lengthens the period of selection of therapy and increases the risk of its complications. Taking into account the individual characteristics of the patient can help in optimizing therapy.
