The methods of homologous high-level expression and simple large-scale purification for coenzyme B(12)-dependent ethanolamine ammonia-lyase of Escherichia coli were developed. The eutB and eutC genes in the eut operon encoded the large and small subunits of the enzyme, respectively. The enzyme existed as the heterododecamer alpha(6)beta(6).

Although inadequate thrombopoietin production and decreased platelet production have been proposed as major causes of cirrhotic thrombocytopenia, the underlying mechanism has not yet been fully clarified. We examined whether the measurement of the immature platelet fraction (IPF) in thrombocytopenic patients with liver dysfunction is useful as a rapid and noninvasive method for the differential diagnosis of chronic liver diseases.

Recently, in response to a need for tooth-colored dowels, several nonmetallic dowels such as carbon-fiber epoxy resin, zirconia, glass fiber-reinforced epoxy resin, and ultra-high polyethelene fiber-reinforced dowels are available. With a plethora of different materials and systems currently available for use, an overview of the scientific literature on nonmetallic dowels is indicated.

The spectral analyses for the reaction mixtures showed that artemisinin 2 with a trioxane structure gave no peak except that for the remaining intact phospholipid 1 (m/z 758.9), indicating that there was no structural change to 1.

A combination of unnatural phosphatidyl acceptor, N,N,N-triethyl-N-2-hydroxyethylammonium bromide 6, as a substrate for PLD, and tandem electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI MS) was found to provide information as to whether a given phospholipid serves as a substrate for the PLD-catalyzed reaction. Thus 2-(13'-hydroperoxy-octadecadienoyl)-1-palmitoylglycerophosphocholine 1, and its degradation products 2-(13'-oxo-octadecadienoyl)-1-palmitoylglycerophosphocholine 9 and 2-(13'-hydroxy-octadecadienoyl)-1-palmitoylglycerophosphocholine 11, in a mixture were found to be a substrate of the PLD-catalyzed transphosphatidylation.

CD28/B7 co-stimulation is involved in the induction and progression of autoimmune diseases, but its role in controlling murine Th17 cell fate remains to be clarified. We here report that soluble anti-CD28 mAb suppressed the differentiation of anti-CD3-stimulated naïve CD4(+) T cells into IL-17-producing cells.

Applying the precursor ion scan mode in tandem ESI mass spectrometry at m/z 198, a signal of the PC-OOH/Et 2 alone could be selectively detected even in the presence of a large excess of a complex mixture of phospholipids in the blood. Furthermore, molecular species that formed from PC-OOH/Et 2 by its degradation in the blood were also observed in the same spectrum.

Novel water-soluble conjugates of 1,2,4,5-tetraoxane bis(quaternary ammonium salts) were synthesized in a relatively stable crystalline form via four steps starting from methyltrioxorhenium-catalyzed endo-peroxidation of ethyl 4-oxocyclohexanecarboxylate with hydrogen peroxide in hexafluoro-2-propanol. The assay for the in vitro toxicity of water-soluble tetraoxanes 5a-5d to malaria parasites indicate that they were inactive against the Plasmodium falciparum FCR-3 strain.

The associations were consistently replicated in four sample sets from individuals of European descent. In the combined analysis of all samples (710 father-mother-child trios, 239 cases and 107 controls), these SNPs were strongly associated with risk of Crohn's disease (P(combined) = 3.

Probably, the effectiveness of the protection against cytotoxicity by these antioxidants dependsprimarily on their rate of incorporation into cells due to their lipophilicity, secondly on their antioxidant activity, and thirdly on their orientation in biomembranes.

Maltosides of butanol, octanol, and lauryl alcohol were found for the first time to serve as substrates for cyclomaltodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase), and glycosyl residue was transfered from dextrin to the substrate affording novel maltosides with 3-4 glucose units.

This care includes egg and nymph guarding, production of trophic eggs, unfertilized, low cost eggs that are used as food by newly hatched nymphs, and progressive provisioning of the host seed. In this study, we have investigated yet a third related Asian cydnid, Canthophorus niveimarginatus, with regard to the possible occurrence of some or all of these complex traits in order to assess how widespread these maternal investment patterns are in this group of insects and to better understand the implications of their manifestations from an evolutionary context.

Among the compounds, 5-ethoxycoumarin showed the highest nematicidal activity. Furthermore, 5-ethoxycoumarin was comparatively harmless against both the brine shrimps, Artemia salina, and the Japanese killifish, Oryzias latipes.

Penicillin-binding protein (PBP) 2B from Streptococcus pneumoniae catalyzes the cross-linking of peptidoglycan precursors that occurs during bacterial cell-wall biosynthesis. A selenomethionyl (SeMet) substituted PBP 2B transpeptidase domain was isolated from a limited proteolysis digest of a soluble form of recombinant PBP 2B and then crystallized. The crystals belonged to space group P4(3)2(1)2, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 86.

The lumped system exhibits relaxation oscillations, which develop mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs) for low preset currents. A fast-slow analysis of the homogeneous dynamics reveals that the MMOs arise from a fast oscillating subsystem and a one-dimensional slow manifold.
