The effect of acidified glucose nutrient solution on preservation of platelet concentrate.

The preservation effect of a new platelet solution--acidified glucose nutrient solution (AGN)--was tested by adding AGN to pooled platelet rich plasma (PRP) prior to preparation of platelet concentrates (PC). Each PRP unit was prepared from a unit of whole blood and four PRP of the same blood group were pooled in 400 ml volume PVC bags. Equal aliquots of each pooled PRP were made prior to preparation of PC.

Perinatal mortality rate in a south Indian population.

Perinatal mortality rate was assessed for 13964 consecutive births in SAT Hospital, Trivandrum, South India, during a period of one year. The overall perinatal mortality rate was 42.75, stillbirth rate 24.

Growth faltering and developmental delay in children with PEM.

Anthropometric measurements, Somatic Quotient (SQ), Development Quotient (DQ), Motor Quotient (MoQ) and Mental Quotient (MeQ) in 136 children in the age group 1-24 months with varying degrees of protein energy malnutrition (PEM) were compared with an equal number of comparable well nourished children. There was a progressive reduction in SQ, DQ, MoQ and MeQ as the degree of PEM advanced. There was a direct linear correlation between SQ and DQ and between height and DQ in 4 degrees PEM.

Effect of vitamin E on lipid components of atherogenic rats.

Rats were made atherogenic by feeding a synthetic diet containing high fat (20%) and cholesterol (2%) for two, three or four weeks. For alpha-tocopherol acetate supplementation studies, the rats on atherogenic diet for two weeks received alpha-tocopherol acetate 5 mg or 20 mg/100 g body weight once daily, orally for two weeks along with the atherogenic diet. Atherogenic diet fed rats showed elevated plasma cholesterol, hepatic total lipids, triglycerides and cholesterol and the increase in the constituents paralleled the period of feeding the diet.

Effect of lipid antioxidants on rat erythrocyte hemolysis.

Lipid antioxidants, DPPD, DAH, BHT, SQ, retinol and alpha-tocopherol were studied for their effects on normal rat erythrocytes. Retinol, BHT and SQ were found to induce hemolysis while DPPD, DAH and alpha-tocopherol were non-hemolytic. Further more the three antioxidants BHT, SQ and retinol showed a synergistic effect on the lysis.

Pathways of glucose catabolism in Mycobacterium smegmatis.

Glucose metabolism in Mycobacterium smegmatis was investigated by the radiorespirometric method and by assaying for key enzymes of the major energy-yielding pathways. Glucose is oxidized in this organism mainly through the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway, irrespective of the carbon source used for growth. The pentose phosphate pathway plays only a minor role and its extent depends on the carbon source used for growth.
