Physical inactivity is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Regular aerobic and resistance training increases exercise capacity and plays a role both in the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Patients with coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, or diabetes mellitus must be considered individually when prescribing exercise because their clinical status can vary greatly.

Physiological effects of exercise on the cardiopulmonary system.

The cardiopulmonary adaptations made to dynamic and static exercise show the amazing ability of the human body to alter physiological processes in order to meet metabolic demands. A remarkable partnership that allows individuals to maximize their abilities and obtain goals exists between the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. The adaptations of the cardiopulmonary system depend heavily on the intensity, duration, frequency, and type of exercise being performed.

Interpersonal workplace stressors and well-being: a multi-wave study of employees with and without arthritis.

The within-person influence of interpersonal stressors on affective well-being and physical well-being was investigated for 109 women with and without arthritis. Participants were interviewed on a weekly basis for 12 consecutive weeks, and the prospective data were analyzed by using hierarchical linear modeling. Overall, interpersonal workplace stressors independently predicted both well-being outcomes.

Monitoring atmospheric particulate matter through cavity ring-down spectroscopy.

Cavity ring-down spectroscopy was explored as a means to measure atmospheric optical extinction. Ambient air was sampled through a window on the campus of the University of Florida and transported to a ring-down cell fashioned from standard stainless steel vacuum components. When a copper vapor laser operating at 10 kHz is employed, this arrangement allowed for nearly continuous monitoring of atmospheric extinction at 510 and 578 nm.

Chemical profiling to differentiate geographic growing origins of coffee.

The objective of this research was to demonstrate the feasibility of this method to differentiate the geographical growing regions of coffee beans. Elemental analysis (K, Mg, Ca, Na, Al, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, S, Cd, Pb, and P) of coffee bean samples was performed using ICPAES. There were 160 coffee samples analyzed from the three major coffee-growing regions: Indonesia, East Africa, and Central/South America.

Eye injuries in women's lacrosse players.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of eye injuries among intercollegiate women's lacrosse players as well as the level of play, specific play settings, and particular mechanisms associated with these injuries.

The role of personality in exposure and reactivity to interpersonal stress in relation to arthritis disease activity and negative affect in women.

The role of personality in the stress process was examined in older women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) and in healthy controls (HCs). Reactivity was examined in relation to arthritis disease activity and negative affect. Interpersonal sensitivity and neuroticism were measured in questionnaires, and interpersonal stress, negative affect, and disease activity were assessed weekly for 12 weeks.

Effect of mouthguards on dental injuries and concussions in college basketball.

Purpose: Dental injuries can be permanent and disfiguring. They are also universally expensive to treat. Many dentists, sports physicians, and athletic trainers recommend mouthguards for athletes participating in certain competitive sports, including men's college basketball, because of a common perception that mouthguards afford protection from dental injuries, and even some concussions.

Mapping the one-dimensional electronic States of nanotube peapod structures.

Arrays of C60 molecules nested inside single-walled nanotubes represent a class of nanoscale materials having tunable properties. We report electronic measurements of this system made with a scanning tunneling microscope and demonstrate that the encapsulated C60 molecules modify the local electronic structure of the nanotube. Our measurements and calculations also show that a periodic array of C60 molecules gives rise to a hybrid electronic band, which derives its character from both the nanotube states and the C60 molecular orbitals.

A comparison of leg-to-leg bioelectrical impedance and skinfolds in assessing body fat in collegiate wrestlers.

A comparison of the leg-to-leg bioelectrical impedance (BIA) system and skinfold analysis in estimating % body fat in a large number of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) collegiate wrestlers was conducted. A series of 5 cross-sectional assessments, including the NCAA Division I and III Championships, were completed throughout the 1998-1999 wrestling season with samples ranging from (N = 90-274). Body density was determined from the 3 skinfold measures using the Lohman prediction equation.

Depression and reactivity to stress in older women with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the role of depressive symptoms in reactivity to stress and pain in older women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods: Participants were 188 older women with RA (N = 87) and OA (N = 101). They were initially assessed for depressive symptoms and interviewed weekly for 12 to 20 weeks regarding interpersonal stress, arthritis pain, and negative affect.

Increased discrimination of "false memories" in autism spectrum disorder.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have impaired ability to use context, which may manifest as alterations of relatedness within the semantic network. However, impairment in context use may be more difficult to detect in high-functioning adults with ASD. To test context use in this population, we examined the influence of context on memory by using the "false memory" test.

Psychosocial resource loss as a mediator of the effects of flood exposure on psychological distress and physical symptoms.

This study used the Conservation of Resources stress model to examine the role of psychosocial resource loss in the aftermath of Midwest flooding. Questionnaires were distributed through churches and completed by 131 adults in flood-affected communities 6 weeks and 6 months after the flood's crest. Frequent psychosocial losses included losses of routine, sense of control, sense of optimism, accomplishing goals, and time with loved ones.

Analysis of interlaboratory performance in the determination of total selenium in water.

This study explored the performance of experienced laboratories in the analysis for total selenium in water by a variety of analytical methods. The goal of the study was to examine intra- and interlaboratory variability. Replicates (n = 7) of 7 sample types that included a reference material of known Se concentration, natural waters, and treated wastewaters were submitted to 7 laboratories with prequalified Se analytical experience.

Creatine supplement use in an NCAA Division I athletic program.

Pharmacologic treatment of exercise-induced asthma.

Exercise-induced asthma (EIA) is a complex disorder affecting a sizeable minority of athletes. Proper pharmacologic management allows most every athlete at any level to participate with EIA. This article briefly addresses the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and basic treatment principles, including nonpharmacologic management for EIA.

Two-channel sequential single-molecule measurement.

Experimental results are given which demonstrate the sequential detection of single molecules with a measurement efficiency of near unity. IR140 dye molecules are detected in sequential probe volumes within a flowing stream through a 9 μm i.d.

Laser-enhanced ionization of mercury atoms in an inert atmosphere with avalanche amplification of the signal.

A new method for laser-enhanced ionization detection of mercury atoms in an inert gas atmosphere is described. The method, which is based on the avalanche amplification of the signal resulting from the ionization from a selected Rydberg level reached by a three-step laser excitation of mercury vapor in a simple quartz cell, can be applied to the determination of this element in various matrices by the use of conventional cold atomization techniques. The overall (collisional + photo) ionization efficiency is investigated at different temperatures, and the avalanche amplification effect is reported for Ar and P-10 gases at atmospheric pressure.

Delayed sequelae after acute overdoses or poisonings: cranial neuropathy related to ethylene glycol ingestion.

A 31-year-old woman came to the hospital with breathlessness, confusion, and a refractory anion gap metabolic acidosis; acute renal failure subsequently developed. Her blood ethylene glycol concentration was 390 mg/L, and she was treated with an intravenous ethanol infusion and hemodialysis. During the tenth and eleventh day after admission bilateral seventh cranial nerve paralysis developed, as well as bilateral dysfunction of cranial nerves II, V, VIII, IX, X and XII.

Direct determination of cadmium in solids using a capacitively coupled microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometer.

A capacitively coupled microwave plasma (CMP) operating at 800 W was examined for the direct determination of cadmium in solids. The laboratory-constructed system contained a tungsten cup electrode capable of holding microsample quantities. A low-powered plasma was used to heat the sample, while at higher powers the plasma was used for sample vaporization and excitation.
