Long-term trends of black carbon and particle number concentrations and their vehicle emission factors in Stockholm.

Black carbon (BC) and particle number (PN) concentrations are usually high in cities due to traffic emissions. European mitigation policies, including Euro emission standards, have been implemented to curb these emissions. We analyzed BC and PN (particle diameter D > 4 nm) concentrations in Stockholm spanning the years 2013-2019 (BC) and 2009-2019 (PN) measured at street canyon and rooftop sites to assess the effectiveness of the implemented policies.

Development and Characterization of a Novel Neuropilin-2 Antibody for Immunohistochemical Staining of Cancer and Sarcoidosis Tissue Samples.

Neuropilin-2 (NRP2) is a cell surface receptor that plays key roles in lymphangiogenesis, but also in pathophysiological conditions such as cancer and inflammation. NRP2 targeting by efzofitimod, a novel immunomodulatory molecule, is currently being tested for the treatment of pulmonary sarcoidosis. To date, no anti-NRP2 antibodies are available for companion diagnostics.

Inhibition of VEGF binding to neuropilin-2 enhances chemosensitivity and inhibits metastasis in triple-negative breast cancer.

Although blocking the binding of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to neuropilin-2 (NRP2) on tumor cells is a potential strategy to treat aggressive carcinomas, a lack of effective reagents that can be used clinically has hampered this potential therapy. Here, we describe the generation of a fully humanized, high-affinity monoclonal antibody (aNRP2-10) that specifically inhibits the binding of VEGF to NRP2, conferring antitumor activity without causing toxicity. Using triple-negative breast cancer as a model, we demonstrated that aNRP2-10 could be used to isolate cancer stem cells (CSCs) from heterogeneous tumor populations and inhibit CSC function and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition.

Quantitative Evaluation of Tactile Foraging Behavior in Pekin and Muscovy Ducks.

Ducks have developed a variety of foraging strategies that utilize touch sensitive bills to match their ecological niche within wetlands. These techniques include diving, sieving, dabbling, and grazing. Ducks exhibiting tactile specialization in foraging outperform visual and non-tactile foraging ducks in behavioral experiments and have a higher percentage of light-touch mechanoreceptor neurons expressing Piezo2 in the trigeminal ganglia.

Isolation of monoclonal antibodies from anti-synthetase syndrome patients and affinity maturation by recombination of independent somatic variants.

The autoimmune disease known as Jo-1 positive anti-synthetase syndrome (ASS) is characterized by circulating antibody titers to histidyl-tRNA synthetase (HARS), which may play a role in modulating the non-canonical functions of HARS. Monoclonal antibodies to HARS were isolated by single-cell screening and sequencing from three Jo-1 positive ASS patients and shown to be of high affinity, covering diverse epitope space. The immune response was further characterized by repertoire sequencing from the most productive of the donor samples.

Wound Infection after Laparoscopic-Assisted Gastrostomy in Infants.

 Gastrostomy placement in children is one of the most frequently performed pediatric surgical procedures and laparoscopic-assisted gastrostomy (LAG) is the preferred technique. Wound infection after LAG has become a significant concern due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance. The aim of this study was to describe the frequency of wound infection after LAG in children younger than 2 years of age and to identify the associated risk factors and the bacterial species involved.

Photobiomodulation Improved the First Stages of Wound Healing Process After Abdominoplasty: An Experimental, Double-Blinded, Non-randomized Clinical Trial.

Background: Photobiomodulation is widely studied for its potential benefits in the wound healing process. Numerous scientific studies have highlighted its effect on various phases of wound repair, but clinical validations are few. This comparative trial aims to evaluate the influence of photobiomodulation on the post-abdominoplasty healing process.

Ketamine Sedation for Patients With Acute Behavioral Disturbance During Aeromedical Retrieval: A Retrospective Chart Review.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, safety (as measured by the incidence of adverse events), and effectiveness (as measured by the incidence of intubations) of ketamine sedation in patients with acute behavioral disturbance (ABD) during air medical retrieval.

Methods: This was a retrospective observational study. Eligible patients were identified by searching the electronic databases of 2 air medical retrieval services in Queensland, Australia, for adult patients with ABD transported between January 1, 2015, and June 30, 2016.

Contemporary Use of Oral Antithrombotic Agents: Focus on Dual and Triple Therapeutic Approaches.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) represents a long-standing health care burden in most industrialized countries. Management of ASCVD is multifaceted, and utilization of antithrombotic agents is a key component of care to reduce vascular events. Minimizing thrombotic risk can be accomplished via antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs; however, combination therapy is warranted for some indications.

Analysis of rRNA processing and translation in mammalian cells using a synthetic 18S rRNA expression system.

Analysis of processing, assembly, and function of higher eukaryotic ribosomal RNA (rRNA) has been hindered by the lack of an expression system that enables rRNA to be modified and then examined functionally. Given the potential usefulness of such a system, we have developed one for mammalian 18S rRNA. We inserted a sequence tag into expansion segment 3 of mouse 18S rRNA to monitor expression and cleavage by hybridization.

The 5' leader of the mRNA encoding the marek's disease virus serotype 1 pp14 protein contains an intronic internal ribosome entry site with allosteric properties.

We demonstrate the presence of a functional internal ribosome entry site (IRES) within the 5' leader (designated 5L) from a variant of bicistronic mRNAs that encode the pp14 and RLORF9 proteins from Marek's disease virus (MDV) serotype 1. Transcribed as a 1.8-kb family of immediate-early genes, the mature bicistronic mRNAs have variable 5' leader sequences due to alternative splicing or promoter usage.

Predisposing chronic diseases and hypophosphatemia in patients with influenza.

Almost half of the hospitalized influenza patients have a chronic disease, which increases the risk for secondary bacterial infections and for adults >65 years influenza is related to high mortality risk. The impact of diabetes mellitus (DM), asthma bronchiale, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on the risk of having a low serum phosphatemia (S-P) in addition to influenza is important to investigate as this increases both morbidity and mortality and can be prevented. Hypophosphatemia could be the explanation for reduced chemo-taxis and phagocytosis, which in addition to respiratory function may increase the risk of pneumonia and sepsis.

Alcohol-based hand-disinfection reduced children's absence from Swedish day care centers.

Aim: To determine if the use of alcohol-based hand-disinfection as a complement to regular hand washing at daycare centers (DCCs) can reduce the childhood rate of absenteeism.

Methods: Children aged 0-6 years attending DCC were studied in a cluster randomized controlled trial during 30 weeks. Thirty matched pairs of DCCs were included in the study, where one of the DCCs was randomized to intervention and the other to control within each pair.

Norovirus strains belonging to the GII.4 genotype dominate as a cause of nosocomial outbreaks of viral gastroenteritis in Sweden 1997--2005. Arrival of new variants is associated with large nation-wide epidemics.

Background: In recent years an increase of the incidence of nosocomial outbreaks caused by noroviruses has been observed throughout Sweden, with high peaks noted in the winter seasons 2002/2003 and 2004/2005, respectively.

Objectives: To phylogenetically characterize norovirus strains causing nosocomial outbreaks from 1997 to 2005 and estimate the impact of norovirus-like disease on the Swedish health care system during the peak season 2002/2003 when a new variant of norovirus occurred.

Study Design: Stool samples from 115 randomly selected nosocomial outbreaks occurring during 1997--2005 throughout Sweden were studied by RT-PCR and sequencing.

Increased sporulation rate of epidemic Clostridium difficile Type 027/NAP1.

Clostridium difficile PCR ribotype 027 comprised 0.2% of a collection of Swedish isolates in 1997-2001 (3 of 1,325 isolates). These isolates had lower moxifloxacin MICs than the epidemic type 027 isolates, but they had the same tcdC sequence and toxin yield.

Low antibiotic resistance rates in Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp but not in Enterobacter spp and Pseudomonas aeruginosa: a prospective observational study in 14 Swedish ICUs over a 5-year period.

Background: Intensive care units (ICUs) are hot zones for emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance because of frequent invasive procedures, antibiotic usage and transmission of bacteria. We report prospective data on antibiotic use and bacterial resistance from 14 academic and non-academic ICUs, participating in the ICU-STRAMA programme 1999-2003.

Methods: The quantity of antibiotics delivered to each ICU was calculated as defined daily doses per 1,000 occupied bed days (DDD(1,000)).

Prescription of antibiotic agents in Swedish intensive care units is empiric and precise.

Since the prescription of antibiotics in the hospital setting is often empiric, particularly in the critically ill, and therefore fraught with potential error, we analysed the use of antibiotic agents in Swedish intensive care units (ICUs). We examined indications for antibiotic treatment, agents and dosage prescribed among 393 patients admitted to 23 ICUs at 7 tertiary care centres, 11 secondary hospitals and 5 primary hospitals over a 2-week period in November 2000. Antibiotic consumption was higher among ICU patients in tertiary care centres with a median of 84% (range 58-87%) of patients on antibiotics compared to patients in secondary hospitals (67%, range 35-93%) and in primary hospitals (38%, range 24-80%).
