Besides strength and balance, flexibility is an important indicator of health-related physical fitness. Thus, the aim of this two-armed randomized controlled pilot trial was to investigate whether sauna yoga at a moderate temperature (50 °C) beneficially affects flexibility, strength, balance, and quality of life (QOL) in healthy elderly community dwellers. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention group (INT, = 11, age: 68.

Interventions with exercise training induce a variety of strength, balance, and endurance improvements. The pooled transfer effects of exercise training on handgrip strength has not been investigated to date.

In 191 patients with mesangial IgA nephropathy, GFR was determined as clearance of 51Cr-EDTA. 86 (45%) of them had subnormal renal function 7.3 +/- 4.

The deterioration rate was calculated from the regression line of 51Cr-EDTA clearance and expressed in ml/min/year. The annual loss in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was greater in patients treated with different beta-blocking agents (-4.

We have studied 209 patients with IgA nephropathy. 26 were hypertensive at the time of renal biopsy, and 59 patients developed hypertension during follow-up. Survival statistics show that only 45% of the patients will remain normotensive 10 years after renal biopsy.

Fifty-seven patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) of diverse etiology entered a prospective, randomized study to evaluate the effect of a low protein diet on the progression rate of CRF. All patients were followed for a control period of 12 or 24 months before randomization into two groups, one permitted unrestricted protein intake and the other prescribed a diet containing 0.4 g/kg body wt/day of protein and 0.

One hundred and seventy-six patients with mesangial IgA nephropathy have been studied retrospectively. Mean follow up from apparent onset of the disease was 9.3 years and with follow up from the diagnostic renal biopsy of 4.

The effect of blood pressure reduction on the progression rate of chronic renal failure (CRF) was studied in 28 patients with CRF of diverse aetiology entering a prospective study (observation time 7-24 months, mean 16 months). Endogenous creatinine clearance was 12-66 ml/min (mean 30 +/- 3 ml/min). We aimed to keep the blood pressure below 160/90 mmHg.

Data from a prospective randomized study in Stockholm demonstrate that more frequent clinical follow-ups without changing the dietary intake of protein significantly retards the progression of renal failure and that the degree of retardation is correlated to improvement in blood pressure control.

Twenty-two patients with amyloidosis secondary to rheumatoid arthritis were randomised and followed prospectively in order to determine whether treatment with cytotoxic drugs could postpone the development of end-stage renal failure. The diagnosis of amyloidosis was based on albuminuria, amyloid-positive rectal and/or abdominal fat aspiration and/or renal biopsies. Renal function was followed by repeated 51Cr-EDTA measurements of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR).

This was much more frequent than during the preceding 2-year period. The progression rate of renal failure evaluated from the change with time in the reciprocal of serum creatinine and creatinine clearance, respectively, was significantly slower after entering the study than before, without any dietary intervention having been instituted.

In retrospect we have found that 38 of 187 patients who fulfilled the criteria of mesangial IgA-nephropathy had possible acute glomerulonephritis at the onset of their disease. We have therefore studied anti-streptococcal antibodies (ASO and ADNAseB) prospectively. Forty-three per cent of the patients had ADNAseB greater than 800 units.

Nitrogen balance was negative on the diet only and was improved with both forms of supplementation.

Negative urinary cultures were found in 64/76 patients (84%).

Patients with the least intensity of immunofluorescent staining for IgA had the highest glomerular filtration rate. The pattern or intensity of the staining gave little or no indication of the severity of the morphological changes or of the short-term prognosis.

One year patient survival increased from 51% (1966 to 1968) to 81% (1975 to 1977). Peritoneal dialysis decreased as the initial mode of treatment, and only 3% of the patients started dialysis treatment with this mode of therapy in the last 3-year period.
