Absolute Quantification of Glutathione Using Top-Hat Optics for IR-MALDESI Mass Spectrometry Imaging.

Infrared matrix-assisted laser desorption electrospray ionization (IR-MALDESI) uses an infrared laser to desorb neutral biomolecules with postionization via ESI at atmospheric pressure. The Gaussian profile of the laser with conventional optics results in the heating of adjacent nonablated tissue due to the energy profile being circular. A diffractive optical element (DOE) was incorporated into the optical train to correct for this disadvantage.

Identification and assessment of factors that impact the demand for and supply of dental hygienists amidst an evolving workforce context: a scoping review.

Background: This study involved a scoping review to explore factors influencing dental hygienist demand and supply in high-income countries.

Methods: A six-stage scoping review was conducted with separate search strategies tailored to four databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and Google) plus a targeted scan of dental hygienist organization websites. This yielded 2,117 unique citations, leading to 148 articles included in the review.

COPD Self-Management: A Patient-Physician Perspective.

This article is co-authored by five patients living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and a primary care physician who has over 30 years of clinical experience and is involved in educating healthcare professionals. The first section of this article is authored by the patients, who describe their experiences of living with COPD. The section that follows is authored by the physician, who discusses the management of COPD in the context of the patients' experiences.

Influence of Green Human Resource Management on firm's environmental performance: Green Employee Empowerment as a mediating factor.

This research aimed to investigate the mediating function of Green Employee Empowerment (GEE) in the relationship between Green Human Resource Management practices (GHRM) and the environmental performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana, drawing on the Ability-Motivation-Opportunity (AMO) theory. This study assessed the hypotheses in the established research model using structural equation modeling based on data collected from 320 participants from small and medium-sized firms in Ghana. The study's results revealed that GHRM practices were significantly correlated with the firm's environmental performance.

Advancing a collective vision for equity-based cocreation through prototyping at an international forum.

Background: Cocreation has the potential to engage people with lived and living experiences in the design and evaluation of health and social services. However, guidance is needed to better include people from equity-deserving groups (EDGs), who are more likely to face barriers to participation, experience ongoing or historical harm, and benefit from accessible methods of engagement.

Novel actinobacteriophage Soos was isolated and purified from Southern Indiana soil using host NRRL B-16540. Sequencing revealed a 57,509 bp circularly permuted genome encoding 87 predicted protein-coding genes. Soos is only the third phage in cluster CP, along with phages Clawz and Sting.

Despite the relative safety of nuclear power, large-scale disasters such as the Fukushima Daiichi (Japan) and Chernobyl (Ukraine) meltdowns are a reminder that emergency preparedness and safety should be a priority. In an emergency situation, there is a need to balance the tension between a rapid response, preventing harm, protecting communities, and safeguarding workers and responders.

Background: As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, efforts to better understand severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral shedding and transmission in both unvaccinated and vaccinated populations remain critical to informing public health policies and vaccine development. The utility of using real time RT-PCR cycle threshold values (C values) as a proxy for infectious viral litres from individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 is yet to be fully understood. This retrospective observational cohort study compares quantitative infectious viral litres derived from a focus-forming viral titre assay with SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR C values in both unvaccinated and vaccinated individuals infected with the Delta strain.

Short-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are highly stable and widely used environmental contaminants that pose potential health risks to humans. Aggregating reliable mechanistic information for safety assessments necessitates physiologically relevant high-throughput screening approaches. Here, we demonstrated the utility of a liver-on-a-chip model to investigate the effects of five short-chain PFAS at low (1 nM) and high (1 μM) concentrations on toxicologically-relevant gene expression profiles using the QuantiGene® Plex Assay.

Virtual reality reduces anxiety and pain in acute hospital palliative care: service evaluation.

Objectives: Virtual reality (VR) might improve symptom management, but there is limited evidence regarding VR in palliative care. We evaluated the feasibility of VR and impact on anxiety and pain for patients in a hospital palliative care consultation service.

Methods: Patients referred to a hospital specialist palliative care team, with anxiety or pain, were offered a VR intervention (a short audiovisual experience).

Characterising resting patterns of mother-calf humpback whale groups in a semi-enclosed embayment along the Australian east coast migration pathway.

On migration from low latitude breeding grounds to high latitude feeding grounds, humpback whale mothers and calves spend time resting in coastal embayments. Unlike other areas where resting has been documented, Jervis Bay, on Australia's east coast, is remote from both breeding and feeding grounds, and provides a unique opportunity to compare resting behaviour observed within a semi-enclosed embayment to observations offshore. Land-based, and UAV surveys were conducted in Jervis Bay in 2018, 2019, and 2021.

Previous studies have documented natural infections of SARS-CoV-2 in various domestic and wild animals. More recently, studies have been published noting the susceptibility of members of the Cervidae family, and infections in both wild and captive cervid populations. In this study, we investigated the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in mammalian wildlife within the state of Vermont.

ThyroidPrint®: clinical utility for indeterminate thyroid cytology.

Molecular testing contributes to improving the diagnosis of indeterminate thyroid nodules (ITNs). ThyroidPrint® is a ten-gene classifier aimed to rule out malignancy in ITN. Post-validation studies are necessary to determine the real-world clinical benefit of ThyroidPrint® in patients with ITN.

Allogenic Lenticular Implantation for Correction of Refractive Error and Ectasia: Narrative Review.

Introduction: Intrastromal lenticule implantation is a promising treatment option for corneal pathologies, from refractive error to ectasia. In this narrative review, we intend to feature up-to-date literature supporting the use of lenticular tissue, a compelling method that can be customized for a variety of applications, providing an additional source of donor tissue for treating corneal diseases.

Methods: We searched databases PubMed, Mendeley, and Scopus last accessed 10 May 2023, for literature on stromal lenticules and narrowed based on relevance.

A growing public health concern, chronic Diesel Exhaust Particle (DEP) exposure is a heavy risk factor for the development of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's (AD). Considered the brain's first line of defense, the Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) and perivascular microglia work in tandem to protect the brain from circulating neurotoxic molecules like DEP. Importantly, there is a strong association between AD and BBB dysfunction, particularly in the Aβ transporter and multidrug resistant pump, P-glycoprotein (P-gp).
