Background: Multimorbidity research has focused on the prevalence and consequences of multimorbidity in older populations. Less is known about the accumulation of chronic conditions earlier in the life course.

Methods: We identified patterns of longitudinal multimorbidity accumulation using 30 years of data from in-person exams, annual follow-ups, and adjudicated end-points among 4,945 participants of the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

Surgical journal clubs: Navigating the post-pandemic landscape.

Pandemic-related distancing regulations gave medical educators at our college an opportunity to reimagine and expand our evidenced-based medicine curriculum to an asynchronous, virtual format. We share the experience of course directors, faculty, and students with our new surgical journal club format. Our goal was to support learners' critical appraisal skills of the surgical literature through active learning modalities such as visual abstract generation and audio-synopsis creation.

An environmental evaluation of urine-diverting dry toilets in Hiloweyn Camp, Dollo Ado, Ethiopia.

Safe and hygienic management of human waste is essential in humanitarian settings. Urine-diverting dry toilets (UDDTs) can enable this management in some humanitarian emergency settings. A seeded, longitudinal environmental study was conducted in Hiloweyn refugee camp, Dollo Ado, Ethiopia, to measure Escherichia coli and Ascaris suum ova inactivation within closed UDDT vaults and to document environmental conditions (temperature, moisture content, and pH) that could influence inactivation.

Cost-Effectiveness of Parathyroid Cryopreservation and Autotransplantation.

Importance: Delayed autotransplantation of cryopreserved parathyroid tissue (DACP) is the only surgical treatment for permanent postoperative hypoparathyroidism. Studies suggest that only a small minority of cryopreserved samples are ultimately autotransplanted with highly variable outcomes. For these reasons, many have questioned the economic utility of the process, although, to the authors' knowledge, this has never been formally studied.

Background: Blenderized tube feedings (BTFs) are used by patients/caregivers who report improvements in gastrointestinal tolerance compared with standard commercial feedings. Background: Wild deer populations utilizing livestock grazing areas risk cross-species transmission of gastrointestinal nematode parasites (GINs), including GINs with anthelmintic resistance (AR) traits. Wild deer have been shown to carry problematic GIN species such as Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus species in the UK, but the presence of livestock GINs in Northern Ireland deer populations is unknown. Also, is it not known whether AR traits exist among GINs of deer such as Ostertagia leptospicularis and Spiculopteragia asymmetrica in pastureland where anthelmintics are heavily used.

Recommendations for measuring and standardizing light for laboratory mammals to improve welfare and reproducibility in animal research.

Light enables vision and exerts widespread effects on physiology and behavior, including regulating circadian rhythms, sleep, hormone synthesis, affective state, and cognitive processes. Appropriate lighting in animal facilities may support welfare and ensure that animals enter experiments in an appropriate physiological and behavioral state. Furthermore, proper consideration of light during experimentation is important both when it is explicitly employed as an independent variable and as a general feature of the environment.

Intraosseous Versus Intravenous Vancomycin in Tourniquetless Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Trial.

Background: Intraosseous (IO) administration of vancomycin at the time of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been shown to be safer and more effective than intravenous (IV) administration at preventing early periprosthetic joint infection. Previous studies have relied on tourniquet inflation to enhance local tissue concentrations and mitigate systemic release.

The tire-derived contaminant -(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-'-phenyl--phenylenediamine quinone (6-PPDQ) was recently identified as a potent toxin to coho salmon (). Studies investigating 6-PPDQ have employed solid-phase extraction (SPE) or liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), providing excellent sensitivity and selectivity. However, cleanup and pre-enrichment steps (SPE/LLE) followed by chromatographic separation can be time- and cost-intensive, limiting sample throughput.
