Chemical compositions, colour profiles, total anthocyanin content and encapsulation efficacy of the protein ingredients were evaluated. An in vitro digestion process was employed to observe the changes in total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and predictive in vitro glycaemic response of the protein ingredients.

Aberrant cell proliferation is a hallmark of cancer, including glioblastoma (GBM). Here we report that protein arginine methyltransferase (PRMT) 6 activity is required for the proliferation, stem-like properties, and tumorigenicity of glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs), a subpopulation in GBM critical for malignancy. We identified a casein kinase 2 (CK2)-PRMT6-regulator of chromatin condensation 1 (RCC1) signaling axis whose activity is an important contributor to the stem-like properties and tumor biology of GSCs.

Food matrixes play a key role in the distribution of contaminants of lipid origin: A case study of malondialdehyde formation in vegetable oils during deep-frying.

Vegetable oils are increasingly replacing animal fats in diets, but malondialdehyde (MDA), a peroxidation product of these oils, has been regarded as toxic; this necessitated investigation of MDA formation during consumption. This study investigated MDA formation in four vegetable oils during frying French fries (FF) and fried chicken breast meat (FCBM) at 180 °C for 7 h. Results showed that MDA contents were lower in oils used for frying foods than in control oils, mainly because MDA was incorporated into the foods.

Buckwheat noodles are mainly sold in the form of fresh and dried noodles in China. Among the noodles with varied proportions of extruded buckwheat flour (20% to 80%), the cooking or textural qualities of fresh and dried buckwheat noodles (FBN and DBN, respectively) were significantly different, and FBN showed a lower cooking loss and breakage ratio and were more elastic than DBN. Objective: The SARS-CoV2 infection is associated with high mortality for individuals who undergo emergency surgery. The United Kingdom surgical associations and Colleges of Surgeons collectively recommended the addition of CT Thorax to all emergency CT abdomen/pelvis imaging in order to help identify possible COVID-19 patients. Early identification of these patients would lead to optimal treatment strategies for the patient and protection for staff members.

The effects of bioactive compounds from blueberry and blackcurrant powders on the inhibitory activities of oat bran pastes against α-amylase and α-glucosidase linked to type 2 diabetes.

The α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities by extracts of oat bran, blueberry and blackcurrant powders, as well as oat bran pastes supplemented 25% of blueberry and blackcurrant powder, were studied by measuring their half inhibitory (IC50) concentrations. Addition of blueberry or blackcurrant powder into oat bran paste increased α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities with a decrease in IC50 values. The main anthocyanidin content was measured by pH differential method and the potential inhibitory mechanisms of these extracts were also investigated by detailed inhibition kinetics and docking simulations.

Increased Response to 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) Reward and Altered Gene Expression in Zebrafish During Short- and Long-Term Nicotine Withdrawal.

An interactive effect between nicotine and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) has been reported but the mechanism underlying such interaction is not completely understood. This study used zebrafish to explore gene expression changes associated with altered sensitivity to the rewarding effects of MDMA following 2-week exposure to nicotine and 2-60 days of nicotine withdrawal. Reward responses to MDMA were assessed using a conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm and gene expression was evaluated using quantitative real-time PCR of mRNA from whole brain samples from drug-treated and control adult zebrafish.

Aims: This study aims to define the epidemiology of trauma presenting to a single centre providing all orthopaedic trauma care for a population of ∼ 900,000 over the first 40 days of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to that presenting over the same period one year earlier. The secondary aim was to compare this with population mobility data obtained from Google.

Methods: A cross-sectional study of consecutive adult (> 13 years) patients with musculoskeletal trauma referred as either in-patients or out-patients over a 40-day period beginning on 5 March 2020, the date of the first reported UK COVID-19 death, was performed.
