Severe burns are a major component of conflict-related injuries and can result in high rates of mortality. Conflict and disaster-related severe burn injuries present unique challenges in logistic, diagnostic and treatment options, while wider conflict is associated with driving local antimicrobial resistance. We present a targeted review of available literature over the last 10 years on the use of systemic antimicrobial antibiotics in this setting and, given limited available data, provide an expert consensus discussion.

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is an emerging biomedical imaging technology, which can potentially be used in the clinic to preoperatively measure melanoma thickness and guide biopsy depth and sample location. View Article and Find Full Text PDFIntroduction: In clinical practice, it is difficult to distinguish between patients with refractory asthma from those with poorly controlled asthma, where symptoms persist due to poor adherence, inadequate inhaler technique or comorbid diseases. We designed an audio recording device which, when attached to an inhaler, objectively identifies the time and technique of inhaler use, thereby assessing both aspects of adherence. This study will test the hypothesis that feedback on these two aspects of adherence when passed on to patients improves adherence and helps clinicians distinguish refractory from difficult-to-control asthma.

PAI using a multielement linear transducer array combined with multichannel collecting system was used for in vivo volumetric imaging of the blood microcirculation, the total concentration of hemoglobin (HbT), and the hemoglobin oxygen saturation (sO₂) within human tissue. Although these isolates were resistant to antibiotics other than colistin, we confirmed that they are still sensitive to disinfectants. The sequencing confirmed that isolates in the larger outbreak were serotype O12, and also revealed that they belonged to sequence type ST111, which is a major epidemic strain of P.
