The pressure sensitivities of the near infrared spectra of the light-harvesting (LH2) complex and a mutant complex with a simplified BChl-B850 binding pocket were compared. In the mutant an abrupt change in the spectral properties occurred at 250 MPa, which was not observed with the native sample. Increased disorder due to collapse of the chromophore pocket is suggested.

The average spin polarization of the electrons in an ensemble of p-doped quantum dots decays down to 1/3 of its initial value with a characteristic time T(Delta) approximately 500 ps, which is attributed to the hyperfine interaction with randomly oriented nuclear spins. We show that this efficient electron spin relaxation mechanism can be suppressed by an external magnetic field as small as 100 mT.

Charged complex formation between the phenylboronic acid functional group and the 1,2-cis-diol glucose resulted in reversible swelling of the inverse opal hydrogel, which was observed through shifts in the optical diffraction wavelength. Patients And Methods: Between 1992 and 2003, 16 patients with T1 squamous penile cancer were treated in our institution either by surveillance or by inguinal lymph node dissection (ILND).
Results: A total of 8 primary lesions were classified as pT1 G2 carcinoma with 4 tumors developing early or delayed inguinal metastatic disease.
Thermal transport in aqueous suspensions of Au-core polymer-shell nanoparticles is investigated by time-resolved measurements of optical absorption. The addition of an organic cosolvent to the suspension causes the polystyrene component of the polymer shell to swell, and this change in the microstructure of the shell increases the effective thermal conductivity of the shell by a factor of approximately 2. The corresponding time scale for the cooling of the nanoparticle decreases from 200 ps to approximately 100 ps.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFComplexes of anionic DNA and cationic liposomes self-assemble into a multilamellar structure where two-dimensional lipid sheets confine a periodic one-dimensional lattice of parallel DNA chains, between which Cd(2+) ions can condense, and be subsequently reacted with H(2)S to form CdS nanorods. In this work, we identify the synergistic roles of the anionic and cationic components within the DNA-membrane template; DNA is highly anionic and condenses the Cd(2+) ions, while the cationic membrane modulates the concentration of condensed Cd(2+) ions to control the final CdS nanorod dimensions. Due to the strong electrostatic interactions between the DNA sugar-phosphate backbone and the Cd(2+) ions, crystallographic control of CdS nanostructures is possible using these simple DNA-membrane templates, which we demonstrate using nanobeam electron diffraction experiments on individual templated CdS nanorods.
