A systematic review (SR) of published efficacy studies in visceral leishmaniasis (VL) was undertaken to describe methodological aspects of design, conduct, analysis, and reporting. Studies published during 2000-2021 and indexed in the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory VL library of clinical studies were eligible for inclusion (N = 89 studies). Of the 89 studies, 40 (44.

Background: Occurrences of relapse after 6-months post-treatment has been reported in recent Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) efficacy studies. A meta-analysis was carried out to quantify the proportion of relapses observed at and beyond 6-months using the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory (IDDO) systematic review (SR) database.

Methods: Studies in the IDDO SR database (1983-2021; 160 studies) were eligible for inclusion if follow-up was at least 6-months, relapse was clearly reported, and patients with HIV coinfections were excluded.

Article Synopsis
  • - Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a serious neglected tropical disease with ongoing global efforts to eliminate it as a public health problem, yet nearly 900 million people still need treatment despite over 9 billion treatments distributed since 2000.
  • - A systematic literature review was conducted to gather individual participant data (IPD) related to LF treatment effectiveness and morbidity management by analyzing studies from various databases between 2000 and 2023.
  • - From 138 eligible studies across 23 countries, researchers identified nearly 15,000 IPD related to infection indicators and approximately 6,100 IPD concerning clinical morbidity, revealing significant gaps in understanding treatment responses.

Atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Biomathematical modelling of the underlying disease and therapy processes might be a useful aid to develop and improve preventive and treatment concepts of atherosclerosis. We here propose a biomathematical model of murine atherosclerosis under different diet and treatment conditions including lipid modulating compound and antibiotics.

Approximately 10% (190 million) of women worldwide are affected by endometriosis, ectopic deposits of endometrial tissue that create a major source of pain that affects lifestyle and reproductive function. The pathogenesis of endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent inflammatory process, influenced/catalyzed by oxidative stress and consequently defective methylation, with biochemical features centered around the folate and one-carbon cycles. We aimed to determine whether a link could be found between the two major methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase single nucleotide polymorphisms (MTHFR SNPs), c.

Respiratory infections caused by multidrug-resistant are difficult to treat and associated with high mortality among critically ill hospitalized patients. Bacteriophages (phages) eliminate pathogens with high host specificity and efficacy. However, the lack of appropriate preclinical experimental models hampers the progress of clinical development of phages as therapeutic agents.

The high incidence of thrombotic events suggests a possible role of the contact system pathway in COVID-19 pathology. In this study, we determined the altered levels of factor XII (FXII) and its activation products in critically ill patients with COVID-19 in comparison with patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome related to the influenza virus (acute respiratory distress syndrome [ARDS]-influenza). Compatible with those data, we found rapid consumption of FXII in COVID-19 but not in ARDS-influenza plasma.

Objective: We aimed to investigate the prognostic performances of oxidative stress (OS), inflammatory and cell activation biomarkers measured at admission in COVID-19 patients.

Design: retrospective monocentric study.

Setting: patients with suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) admitted to the hospital.

Purpose: MTHFR, one of the major enzymes in the folate cycle, is known to acquire single-nucleotide polymorphisms that significantly reduce its activity, resulting in an increase in circulating homocysteine. Methylation processes are of crucial importance in gametogenesis, involved in the regulation of imprinting and epigenetic tags on DNA and histones. We have retrospectively assessed the prevalence of MTHFR SNPs in a population consulting for infertility according to gender and studied the impact of the mutations on circulating homocysteine levels.

During the recent 'first wave' of the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Health Service (NHS) has triaged planned services to create surge capacity. The primary prevention implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) was in a grey area of triage guidance, but it was suggested as a procedure that could be reasonably stopped. Recent reports have highlighted deaths of patients awaiting ICDs who may have been deferred during the pandemic.

Background: Despite a historical association with poor tolerability, a comprehensive review on safety of antileishmanial chemotherapies is lacking. We carried out an update of a previous systematic review of all published clinical trials in visceral leishmaniasis (VL) from 1980 to 2019 to document any reported serious adverse events (SAEs).

Methods: For this updated systematic review, we searched the following databases from 1st Jan 2016 through 2nd of May 2019: PUBMED, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, clinicaltrials.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a deadly condition characterized by progressive respiratory dysfunction. Exacerbations due to airway infections are believed to promote disease progression, and presence of in the lung microbiome has been associated with the progression of IPF and mortality. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of lung fibrosis on susceptibility to pneumococcal pneumonia and bacteremia.

Background: The Attain Stability Quadripolar 4798 lead is a relatively new quadripolar active fixation coronary sinus (CS) lead. No cases of extraction of a chronically implanted 4798 lead have been published to date.

Case Summary: A 52-year-old man with a history of previous cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemaker (CRT-P) insertion and atrioventricular node ablation presented to our institution with a pocket infection 69 weeks after implantation.

Since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak was first reported in December 2019, many independent trials have been planned that aim to answer similar questions. Tools allowing researchers to review studies already underway can facilitate collaboration, cooperation and harmonisation. The Infectious Diseases Data Observatory (IDDO) has undertaken a living systematic review (LSR) to provide an open, accessible and frequently updated resource summarising characteristics of COVID-19 study registrations.

Obesity and its related metabolic disorders, as well as infectious diseases like covid-19, are important health risks nowadays. It was recently documented that long-term fasting improves metabolic health and enhanced the total antioxidant capacity. The present study investigated the influence of a 10-day fasting on markers of the redox status in 109 subjects.

Background: In percutaneous coronary interventions, use of the radial artery may be limited by vascular anatomy or vascular complications, such as radial artery spasm, dissection or perforation. The balloon-assisted tracking (BAT) technique is a novel and innovative method to successfully perform transradial procedures in patients with difficult vascular anatomy, severe tortuosity or radial artery spasm. In addition, the BAT technique can serve as a bail-out technique when vascular complications such as artery dissection or perforation occur.

Purpose Of Review: In this brief review, we discuss the current epidemiological data and latest results from basic research on the cardiovascular sequelae after lower respiratory tract infection.

Recent Findings: Novel epidemiological evidence substantiates the association between pneumonia and subsequent cardiovascular events (CVEs) in the short- and long-term after viral or bacterial acute infection. Biomarkers such as cardiac troponin or coronary artery calcium may represent useful predictive tools for the detection of cardiac involvement during and after pneumonia.

Pneumonia may be caused by a wide range of pathogens and is considered the most common infectious cause of death in humans. Murine acute lung infection models mirror human pathologies in many aspects and contribute to our understanding of the disease and the development of novel treatment strategies. Despite progress in other fields of tissue imaging, histopathology remains the most conclusive and practical read out tool for the descriptive and semiquantitative evaluation of mouse pneumonia and therapeutic interventions.
