Background: Poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) based biodegradable nanoparticles are of key interest for the development of controlled release drug delivery systems and for other biomedical applications. It has been reported that PLGA polymers can be converted into colloidal nanoparticulate systems by various techniques, such as emulsification-diffusion, emulsification-evaporation, interfacial deposition, salting out, dialysis and nanoprecipitation. Emulsification-evaporation with water immisci-ble solvents including dichloromethane and chloroform has been the preferred method for the synthesis of PLGA nanoparticles due to the low boiling point and limited water solubility of these solvents.

Although reduced social attention and increased nonsocial attention have been reported in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the studies have relied on predominantly male samples and have been underpowered to examine sex differences. Restricted and repetitive behaviors are a core feature of autism spectrum disorder; however, research on the functional impact of these behaviors on the quality of life for individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their families remains scarce. We conducted focus groups with parents of children with autism spectrum disorder and clinicians in order to better characterize the functional impact of behavioral inflexibility, which represents one potential dimensional construct that could account for the breadth of behaviors comprising the restricted and repetitive behavior domain. Transcripts of the focus groups were analyzed using qualitative analysis coding methods to determine parent and clinician beliefs on a range of issues related to behavioral inflexibility including overall impact, types of child behaviors, and strategies for managing behavioral inflexibility.

Background: Late-life depression (LLD) has been associated with alterations in intrinsic functional networks, best characterized in the default mode network (DMN), cognitive control network (CCN), and salience network. However, these findings often derive from small samples, and it is not well understood how network findings relate to clinical and cognitive symptomatology.

Milk has previously been considered as a potential lipid-based drug delivery system for poorly water soluble drugs but it has never gained significant attention. Soft, rotationally symmetric particles of dispersed hexagonal liquid crystalline phase are produced using a method previously developed for cubosome microparticle production. The technique forms hexosome particles via removal of ethanol from emulsion droplets containing monoolein, water, and one of the various hydrophobic molecules: vitamin E, hexadecane, oleic acid, cyclohexane, or divinylbenzene. The unique rotational symmetry of the particles is characterized by optical microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering to link particle phase, shape, and structure to composition.

Phytantriol is an interfacially-active lipid that is chemically robust, non-digestible and forms particles with internal bicontinuous cubic phase structures (cubosomes) when dispersed with non-ionic surfactants at ambient and physiological temperatures. The liquid crystalline internal structure of phytantriol-based cubosomes can be changed to alter the interfacial contact area/topology with the aqueous dispersant to trigger bioactive payload release or to alter the local membrane curvature around bound or embedded proteins. To enable the study of payload distribution, structure and transformation kinetics within phytantriol particles by neutron scattering techniques it is desirable to have access to a deuterated version of this molecule but to date a synthetic route has not been available.

Sacral osteomyelitis is a rare complication after robotic sacrocolpopexy, with previous reports of enteric and skin flora as inciting organisms.
