Detergent-solubilized bovine rhodopsin produces mixed detergent/lipid/protein micelles. The effect of dodecyl maltoside detergent on the thermal stability of dark-state rhodopsin, and upon formation of the different intermediates after rhodopsin photobleaching (metarhodopsin II and metarhodopsin III), and upon transducin activation has been studied. No significant effect is observed for the thermal stability of dark-state rhodopsin in the range of detergent concentrations studied, but a decrease in the stability of metarhodopsin II and an increase in metarhodopsin III formation is observed with decreasing detergent concentrations.

Method: The sample included 64 female patients with BPD. Childhood traumatic experiences and childhood neglect were measured using the Structured Trauma Interview, dissociative experiences with the Dissociative Experiences Scale, and PTSD with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV.
Adverse reactions to medications create an important health problem and a nursing professional must assume his/her role in detecting them early on, in identifying them, in educating the public about them, in treating them, and finally in serving notice of them. In order to ease the identification of adverse effects which patients may present, the authors provide general information about adverse reactions and factors related to a greater risk occurrence of those reactions. Based on a practical case, the authors respond to five questions on features having casual relationship between a pharmaceutical product and an adverse reaction by means of which it is possible to define the plausibility of suspected adverse effects.

To probe the orientation and packing of helices I and II a number of replacements at positions 51 and 89 were prepared by using site-directed mutagenesis, and the corresponding proteins expressed in COS-1 cells were characterized. View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: The aim of this article is to examine whether standard Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) (1) can be successfully implemented in a mixed population of borderline patients with or without comorbid substance abuse (SA), (2) is equally efficacious in reducing borderline symptomatology among those with and those without comorbid SA, and (3) is efficacious in reducing the severity of the substance use problems.
Method: The implementation of DBT is examined qualitatively. The impact of comorbid SA on its efficacy, as well as on its efficacy in terms of reducing SA, is investigated in a randomized clinical trial comparing DBT with treatment-as-usual (TAU) in 58 female borderline patients with (n = 31) and without (n = 27) SA.
AMPA receptor-mediated excitotoxicity has been implicated in the selective motor neuron loss in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In some culture models, motor neurons have been shown to be selectively vulnerable to AMPA receptor agonists due to Ca(2+) influx through Ca(2+)-permeable AMPA receptors. Because the absence of GluR2 in AMPA receptors renders them highly permeable to Ca(2+) ions, it has been hypothesized that the selective vulnerability of motor neurons is due to their relative deficiency in GluR2.
