We performed a retrospective study to assess the long-term outcome of non-augmented anatomical direct repair of the lateral ankle ligaments, as originally described by Duquennoy et al, for the treatment of chronic lateral instability of the ankle. This procedure aims to restore stability by the re-insertion and tightening of the original talofibular and calcaneofibular ligaments without division of the ligament. We examined the outcome in terms of the post-operative quality of life, the function of the joint and the development of osteoarthritis.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe performed a cross-sectional study of 160 adult patients with severe cerebral palsy to study the relationship between radiographic hip disorders (migration and deformity of the femoral head), on the one hand, and complications such as handling problems, seating problems, decubitus ulcers, fractures and contractures, on the other hand. Both migration and deformity were positively related to the need for a special seat in the wheelchair and adduction contractures of the hip. We conclude that migration and deformity of the femoral head, if possible, should be prevented in patients with severe cerebral palsy.

This paper provides molecular evidence for a liver glyconeogenic pathway, that is, a concomitant activation of hepatic gluconeogenesis and glycogenesis, which could participate in the mechanisms that cope with amino acid excess in high-protein (HP) fed rats. This evidence is based on the concomitant upregulation of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) gene expression, downregulation of glucose 6-phosphatase catalytic subunit (G6PC1) gene expression, an absence of glucose release from isolated hepatocytes and restored hepatic glycogen stores in the fed state in HP fed rats. These effects are mainly due to the ability of high physiological concentrations of portal blood amino acids to counteract glucagon-induced liver G6PC1 but not PEPCK gene expression.

Background: Long-term writing difficulties in children after treatment with vincristine for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Wilms tumor, B non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and malignant mesenchymal tumors, were investigated.
Procedure: Handwriting of 33 survivors and 33 controls matched for age, sex, and grade, was assessed with the BHK-scale. The examiner was blinded for whether a child was a case or a control.
Besides having a pivotal biological function as a component of coenzymes, riboflavin appears a promissing antitumoral agent, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. In this work, we demonstrate that irradiated riboflavin, when applied at microM concentrations, induces an orderly sequence of signaling events finally leading to leukemia cell death. The molecular mechanism involved is dependent on the activation of caspase 8 caused by overexpression of Fas and FasL and also on mitochondrial amplification mechanisms, involving the stimulation of ceramide production by sphingomyelinase and ceramide synthase.

Assessment of soft tissue in normal and abnormal joint motion today gets feasible by acquiring time series of 3D MRI images. However, slice-by-slice viewing of such 4D kinematic images is cumbersome, and does not allow appreciating the movement in a convenient way. Simply presenting slice data in a cine-loop will be compromised by through-plane displacements of anatomy and "jerks" between frames, both of which hamper visual analysis of the movement.
