Evaluating a Serious Gaming Electronic Medication Administration Record System Among Nursing Students: Protocol for a Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Although electronic medication administration record systems have been implemented in settings where nurses work, nursing students commonly lack robust learning opportunities to practice the skills and workflow of digitalized medication administration during their formative education. As a result, nursing students' performance in administering medication facilitated by technology is often poor. Serious gaming has been recommended as a possible intervention to improve nursing students' performance with electronic medication administration in nursing education.

Isolation of DNA from small amounts of elephant ivory: Sampling the cementum with total demineralization extraction.

Genotyping ivory samples can determine the geographic origin of poached ivory as well as the legality of ivory being sold in ivory markets. We conducted a series of experiments to determine where the DNA is most concentrated in ivory samples and how best to increase DNA yield from groups of samples likely to vary in DNA concentration. We examined variation in DNA amplification success from: the layer(s) of the tusk (cementum and/or dentine) being extracted, demineralization temperature and time, and the concentration of eluates.

Are Anti-β2 Glycoprotein 1 Antibodies Associated with Placenta-Mediated Pregnancy Complications? A Nested Case-Control Study.

Background: While anti-β2 glycoprotein 1 (anti-β2GP1) antibody positivity is included in the diagnostic criteria for antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), the association between anti-β2GP1 and the obstetrical complications of APS has been inconsistently reported and remains unclear.

Objective: We completed a case-control study nested within the Canadian Ottawa and Kingston (OaK) Birth Cohort to evaluate the association between anti-β2GP1 antibody positivity and placenta-mediated pregnancy complications.

Study Design: Five hundred cases were randomly selected among pregnant women who experienced any of the following independently adjudicated placenta-mediated pregnancy complications: preeclampsia, placental abruption, late pregnancy loss (≥ 12 weeks' gestation), and birth of a small-for-gestational age (SGA) infant < 10th percentile.

Improving Measurement of Trait Competitiveness: A Rasch Analysis of the Revised Competitiveness Index With Samples From New Zealand and US University Students.

Measuring competitiveness is necessary to fully understand variables affecting student learning. The 14-item Revised Competitiveness Index has become a widely used measure to assess trait competitiveness. The current study reports on a Rasch analysis to investigate the psychometric properties of the Revised Competitiveness Index and to improve its precision for international comparisons.

Production of monoclonal antibodies in microfluidic devices.

Herein, a microfluidic device with cistern design for cultivation of adherent eukaryotic cells for the production of recombinant proteins is presented. The geometric configuration of the microchannels in the device provided laminar flow with reduced velocity profiles in the cisterns, resulting in an adequate microenvironment for long-term adherent cell growth with passive pumping flow cycles of 24 hours. CHO-ahIFNα2b and HEK-ahIFNα2b adherent cell lines expressing a novel anti-hIFN-α2b recombinant monoclonal antibody (MAb) for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus were cultured on the surface of PDMS/glass microchannels coated with poly-d-lysine.

Physician preference items: what factors matter to surgeons? Does the vendor matter?

Background: The USA devotes roughly $200 billion (6%) of annual national health expenditures to medical devices. A substantial proportion of this spending occurs during orthopedic (eg, hip and knee) arthroplasties - two high-volume hospital procedures. The implants used in these procedures are commonly known as physician preference items (PPIs), reflecting the physician's choice of implant and vendor used.

Theoretical Investigation of the Reactivity of Sodium Dicyanamide with Nitric Acid.

There is a need to replace current hydrazine fuels with safer propellants, and dicyanamide (DCA)-based systems have emerged as promising alternatives because they autoignite when mixed with some oxidizers. Previous studies of the hypergolic reaction mechanism have focused on the reaction between DCA and the oxidizer HNO; here, we compare the calculated pathway of DCA + HNO with the reaction coordinate of the ion pair sodium dicyanamide with nitric acid, Na[DCA] + HNO. Enthalpies and free energies are calculated in the gas phase and in solution using a quantum mechanical continuum solvation model, SMD-GIL.

Diagnostic outcome and indications for testing in patients with positive ANCA at a Canadian tertiary care centre.

Introduction/objective: With widespread availability of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) testing, interpreting positive results has become increasingly challenging. Here, we conducted a retrospective study to evaluate indications for testing and diagnosis of patients with positive ANCA.

Methods: Positive ANCA tests (immunofluorescence or immunoassay) performed between April 2014 and March 2015 were identified using the Ottawa Hospital (TOH) laboratory information system.

Ethnic dependent differences in diagnostic accuracy of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in Canadian adults.

Aim: Previous studies have shown varying sensitivity and specificity of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) to identify diabetes and prediabetes, compared to 2-h oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT) and fasting plasma glucose (FPG), in different ethnic groups. Within the Canadian population, the ability of HbA1c to identify prediabetes and diabetes in First Nations, Métis and Inuit, East and South Asian ethnic groups has yet to be determined.

Methods: We collected demographic, lifestyle information, biochemical results of glycemic status (FPG, OGTT, and HbA1c) from an ethnically diverse Canadian population sample, which included a purposeful sampling of First Nations, Métis, Inuit, South Asian and East Asian participants.

The Importance of Trust in the Adoption and Use of Intelligent Assistive Technology by Older Adults to Support Aging in Place: Scoping Review Protocol.

Background: Intelligent assistive technologies that complement and extend human abilities have proliferated in recent years. Service robots, home automation equipment, and other digital assistant devices possessing artificial intelligence are forms of assistive technologies that have become popular in society. Older adults (>55 years of age) have been identified by industry, government, and researchers as a demographic who can benefit significantly from the use of intelligent assistive technology to support various activities of daily living.

Social Media Technology and Public Health in Ontario: Findings from a Planning Meeting Exploring Current Practices and Future Research Directions.

In the province of Ontario, many of the public health units (PHUs) now possess and use social media as part of their daily health promotion and communication operations. To explore this topic, a planning meeting was held to generate deeper insights toward the use of these forms of technology for preventative services delivery. The planning meeting was held with 50 participants, comprising representatives from 20 of the 36 PHUs in Ontario, interested academics, students and government representatives.

Monoclonal protein reference change value as determined by gel-based serum protein electrophoresis.

Introduction: The International Myeloma Working Group recommendations for monitoring disease progression or response include quantitation of the involved monoclonal immunoglobulin. They have defined the minimum change criteria of ≧25% with an absolute change of no <5g/L for either minimal response or progression. Limited evidence is available to accurately determine the magnitude of change in a monoclonal protein to reflect a true change in clinical status.

Candidate recommendations for protein electrophoresis reporting from the Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists Monoclonal Gammopathy Working Group.

Protein electrophoresis is commonly used as an aid in the diagnosis of monoclonal gammopathies and is performed in many laboratories in Canada and throughout the world. However, unlike many other diagnostic tests, there is limited guidance for standardization and neither guidance nor specific recommendations for clinical reporting of serum (SPE) or urine (UPE) protein electrophoresis and immunotyping available in the literature. Therefore, a Canadian effort was undertaken to recommend standards that cover all aspects of clinical reporting with an ultimate goal towards reporting standardization.

Compassion focused therapy: Exploring the effectiveness with a transdiagnostic group and potential processes of change.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a compassion focused therapy (CFT) group with a transdiagnostic population, as compared to treatment as usual (TAU). A secondary aim was to explore the potential processes of change within the treatment.

Introduction: An increasing number of electronic health record (EHR) systems have been implemented in clinical practice environments where nurses work. Findings from previous studies have found that a number of intended benefits of the technology have not yet been realised to date, partially due to poor system adoption among health professionals such as nurses. Previous studies have suggested that nurse managers can support the effective adoption and use of the technology by nurses.
