Field investigations of protection afforded by live Babesia bovis vaccine in Australia revealed that a ninefold increase in vaccine failures occurred in the period from 1985 to 1990. Laboratory trials using 189 experimental cattle were conducted to evaluate the protection afforded by the Babesia bovis strain used in the commercial vaccine during this time. Four isolates from clinical cases of babesiosis in vaccinated cattle were assessed.

Serious outbreaks of a paralytic disease in cattle occurring in the spring and summer of 1988 were investigated on three farms in south eastern Queensland, Australia. On one farm 237 (31 per cent) of 770 cattle died, on the second 109 (40 per cent) of 271 cattle died and on the third 30 (8 per cent) of 380 cows died. Botulism was suspected on the basis of the clinical signs, the lack of significant pathology, a failure to incriminate other agents and a positive feeding trial in one sheep.

Optic neuropathy during non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a late central nervous system complication of unfavourable prognosis. It appears especially with involvement of the bone marrow. A normal cerebrospinal fluid, lack of any beneficial effect of the chemo-corticotherapy and absence of papilledema suggest paraneoplastic, or iatrogenic (radio and (or) chemotherapeutic) neuropathy with conclusive histopathological proof only at autopsy.

It was aimed to assess if intrathecal (i.t.) injections of acetylsalicylic acid and salicylic acid depress C fibre-evoked activity in the sensory part of the nociceptive system.

The pathogenetic relationship between tumour and hypertension was investigated in 129 patients with renal cell carcinoma, of whom 41 (31.8%) were hypertensive. Of these 41 patients with renal tumours and hypertension, 6 (14.

We report the findings in 21 Belgian patients (12 males and 9 females, median age 61 years) with LGLPD. Symptoms at presentation included infection (n = 9), weight loss (n = 5), asthenia (n = 9), pruritus (n = 2) and arthralgia (n = 7). Four patients were asymptomatic.

Although it is widely accepted that persons become shorter as they grow older, most estimates of the rate of decline are based largely on cross-sectional studies and are confounded by secular changes and individual variation. The present study uses a mixed series of longitudinal physical measurements, obtained by the Busselton Population Studies Group, for nearly the entire adult population of Busselton, Western Australia. All persons in the sample who had a minimum of three measures at 3-year intervals are included in our analysis, regardless of health.

A rare case of renal hypertension in a 3-year-old girl caused by segmental renal hypoplasia of vascular origin is presented. Resection of the hypoplastic segment of the kidney permitted successful treatment of the high blood pressure with preservation of renal function. Elevated plasma renin activity in the renal vein of the affected side and biochemical investigations demonstrated that the resected segment of the renal cortex was the source of the renin leading to hypertension by activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.

Ki-67 is a commercially available monoclonal antibody that reacts with a nuclear antigen detectable in proliferating cells only. Since its first description, it has been widely used as a "universal" proliferation marker and few groups have questioned the validity of the initially described reactivity, although this was tested only on very restricted experimental models. We wanted to check its reactivity on normal bone marrow (BM) samples using a multiparameter flow cytometric analysis.

Antigens labelled by the immunohistochemical alkaline phosphatase anti-alkaline phosphatase (APAAP) method can be visualized by a lead capture technique. Optimal conditions of the reaction, evaluated by microdensitometry using computer-aided image processing, are described.

We report on a patient with aplastic anaemia and an invasive aspergillosis of the lung with subsequent osteomyelitis of the ribs. Diagnosis was made by puncture of the soft tissues and isolation of Aspergillus fumigatus. Treatment with amphotericin B induced renal function disturbances.

Seventy-seven patients with relapsed or refractory acute leukemia and three with acute blastic chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) were treated in an open Phase II study using mitoxantrone 12 mg/m2 intravenously daily X 5 days. Complete remission (CR) was achieved in 32 of 80 (40%), including 23/45 (52%) with relapsed acute nonlymmphocytic leukemia (ANLL), four of 12 (33%) with relapsed acute lymphocytic leukemia ALL, four of 17 (24%) with ANLL refractory to daunorubicin + cytosine arabinoside, and one of three (33%) with refractory ALL. None of the patients with acute blastic CML achieved CR.

Escherichia coli isolates from avian colibacillosis were examined for adherence-associated characteristics and post-colonisation pathogenicity. The adherence-associated characteristics studied included expression of pili, ability to partition with a hydrophobic phase, and ability to bind to Biosilon plastic polar-surfaced microcarriers. None of the adherence-associated characteristics correlated absolutely with post-colonisation pathogenicity, and thus in vitro tests for these adherence-associated characteristics cannot be used to predict whether any given E.

We describe a 26 year-old male with a pancytopenia possibly due to cimetidine. Using progenitor cell culture techniques we investigated the mechanism of this bone marrow toxicity. Our results show a cimetidine dose-dependent inhibition of normal human CFU-GM colony formation as described by Fitchen and Koeffler in 1980.

An outbreak of disease, characterised by neurological signs and increased mortality, occurred in 17 out of 50 turkey farms in a village. Virological tests were negative as were routine bacteriological tests of the organs. However, Pasteurella anatipestifer was repeatedly isolated from the brain.

A man without a history of porphyric attacks developed a subacute motor neuropathy at the age of 63. At the same time the first signs of a myeloproliferative disorder were found. He had a homozygous deficiency of erythrocyte delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALA-D) with autosomal recessive inheritance.
