  • The study examines the reliability of the revised AO/OTA classification system for diaphyseal fractures, specifically focusing on femoral shaft fractures.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 139 patients to compare the new classification with the older version using a statistical measure called Fleiss kappa.
  • Both classification systems demonstrated moderate reliability, suggesting that while standardization is important for clinical decisions, there's still a need for ongoing education and improvement in fracture classification.

Article Synopsis
  • Thrombocytopenia, characterized by low platelet counts, increases bleeding risks and can affect outcomes in hip arthroplasty; this study evaluated its impact on surgery results in 437 patients over 20 years.
  • The analysis categorized patients into severe (< 50 × 10/µL) and non-severe (50-149 × 10/µL) thrombocytopenia, comparing factors like blood loss, transfusion needs, and complications during hip surgery.
  • Findings showed similar surgery times and hospital stays for both groups, but those with severe thrombocytopenia required more blood transfusions, confirming that hip arthroplasties remain safe despite low platelet counts.

, one of the largest genera of the family Ranunculaceae, has a wide array of morphological variation and is considered the most difficult group of taxa in terms of infrageneric discrimination. This study assessed the leaf micromorphological features of 19 taxa (16 species and three varieties) found in Korea. The leaf surface features were studied under scanning electron microscopy, and the stomatal counting and measurement were carried out under light microscopy.

Pose estimation is crucial for ensuring passenger safety and better user experiences in semi- and fully autonomous vehicles. Traditional methods relying on pose estimation from regular color images face significant challenges due to a lack of three-dimensional (3D) information and the sensitivity to occlusion and lighting conditions. Depth images, which are invariant to lighting issues and provide 3D information about the scene, offer a promising alternative.

Background: Potential differences in organ preservation between total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) regimens integrating long-course chemoradiotherapy (LCCRT) and short-course radiotherapy (SCRT) in rectal cancer remain undefined.

Patients And Methods: This natural experiment arose from a policy change in response to the COVID-19 pandemic during which our institution switched from uniformly treating patients with LCCRT to mandating that all patients be treated with SCRT. Our study includes 323 locally advanced rectal adenocarcinoma patients treated with LCCRT-based or SCRT-based TNT from January 2018 to January 2021.

Background: Use of the Debriefing Assessment for Simulation in Healthcare (DASH) would be beneficial for novice debriefers with less or no formal training in debriefing. However, the DASH translated into Korean and tested for psychometrics is not yet available. Thus, this study was to develop a Korean version of the DASH student version (SV) and test its reliability and validity among baccalaureate nursing students in Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the creation and detailed examination of new antimony(III) complexes, specifically naming six different variants based on their chemical structure.
  • The molecular analysis revealed that one complex forms a unique shape known as a homoleptic conformer, with a distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry, confirmed by X-ray crystallography.
  • Thermal stability tests showed that one of the complexes had exceptional volatility, leaving only 0.16% residue after heating to 500 °C, with additional data regarding vapor pressure and heat of vaporization for other complexes.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers synthesized magnesium, calcium, and barium heteroleptic complexes from bis(trimethylsilyl)amide compounds through substitution reactions with specific ligands.
  • The resulting complexes were characterized using techniques like FTIR, NMR, thermal analysis, and elemental analysis, confirming their distinct structures.
  • Additionally, the complexes underwent trimethylsilylation reactions due to increased acidity from the presence of electron-withdrawing hfac ligands.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of calcaneal lengthening osteotomy (CLO) and double arthrodesis of the talonavicular and calcaneocuboid joints (DA) for correcting planovalgus foot deformity exclusively in patients with generalised joint hypermobility.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 29 feet in 17 consecutive patients who underwent either CLO or DA. The mean age at surgery was 11.

This study describes the synthesis of germanium and tin complexes Ge(mdpaS) (), Ge(edpaS) (), Ge(bdpaS) (), Ge(empaS) (), Sn(mdpaS) (), Sn(edpaS) (), Sn(bdpaS) (), and Sn(empaS) () (mdpaSH = ()--methoxy-2,2-dimethylpropanimidothioic acid; edpaSH = ()--ethoxy-2,2-dimethylpropanimidothioic acid; bdpaSH = ()--(tert-butoxy)-2,2-dimethylpropanimidothioic acid; empaSH = ()--ethoxy-2-methylpropanimidothioic acid), using newly designed -alkoxy thioamide ligands as precursors for metal chalcogenide materials. All complexes were characterized using various analytical techniques, and the single-crystal structures of complexes and revealed a distorted seesaw geometry in the monomeric SnL form. Thermogravimetric (TG) curves showed differences between Ge compounds, which exhibited single-step weight losses, and Sn compounds, which exhibited multistep weight losses.

Continued advances in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer (BC) have led to an increase in the number of long-term BC survivors and an increase in the incidence of metachronous BC in the contralateral breast. Therefore, it is important to understand the factors that influence the development of metachronous BC; however, the impact of the laterality of the initial ipsilateral (I)BC as a risk factor for the development of metachronous contralateral (MC)BC has not been extensively investigated. The present study included 17,082 female patients with stage 0-3 IBC from the prospectively maintained Korean Breast Cancer Registry from 1989-2013 and divided them into two groups: Patients with MCBC (n=88) and those without MCBC (n=16,994).

This study investigated the effects of rumen-protected L-tryptophan or L-ascorbic acid supplementation on the productivity of lactating Holstein cows during a high-temperature period. Thirty cows were assigned to three dietary groups: control (CON), treatment 1 (TRT 1; rumen-protected L-tryptophan, 20 g/cow/d), and treatment 2 (TRT 2; rumen-protected L-ascorbic acid, 20 g/cow/d). As the high-temperature period progressed, the decrease in milk yield and dry matter intake (DMI) in the TRT 1 and TRT 2 groups was lower than that in the CON group.

Importance: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are prevalent hospital-acquired infections with significant patient impacts and global health care burdens. The World Health Organization recommends using wound protector devices in abdominal surgery as a preventive measure to lower the risk of SSIs despite limited evidence.

Objective: To examine the efficacy of a dual-ring, plastic wound protector in lowering the SSI rate in open gastrointestinal (GI) surgery irrespective of intra-abdominal contamination levels.

Solid oxide fuel cells that operate at intermediate temperatures require efficient catalysts to enhance the inherently poor electrochemical activity of the composite electrodes. Here, a simple and practical electrochemical deposition method is presented for fabricating a PrO overlayer on lanthanum strontium manganite-yttria-stabilized zirconia (LSM-YSZ) composite electrodes. The method requires less than four minutes for completion and can be carried out under at ambient temperature and pressure.

Measuring human body dimensions is critical for many engineering and product design domains. Nonetheless, acquiring body dimension data for populations using typical anthropometric methods poses challenges due to the time-consuming nature of manual methods. The measurement process for three-dimensional (3D) whole-body scanning can be much faster, but 3D scanning typically requires subjects to change into tight-fitting clothing, which increases time and cost and introduces privacy concerns.
