Naval shipboard operations impose numerous environmental and occupational stressors, which can adversely affect mental and physical health outcomes. Moreover, this operational setting also complicates the implementation of countermeasures to protect personnel from these stressors. Thus, any easily accessible or modifiable protective factors should be explored further for their potential to support the health of military personnel.

Caloric Restriction Diet Attenuates Systemic Bone Fragility after Radiotherapy.

Bone fragility is a well-documented long-term side effect of radiotherapy, which currently has no preventative treatments. In this study, we applied a caloric restriction (CR) diet to attenuate both local and systemic bone loss after irradiation (RTx) in an established female Balb/c mouse model (4 consecutive daily doses of 5 Gy to the right hindlimb only). CR mice were tapered down to a 30% reduced calorie diet (RTx/CR) one week before irradiation, while regular diet (RD) mice received food ad libitum (RTx/RD).

Introduction: Shooting simulations provide an excellent opportunity to train use-of-force decisions in controlled environments. Recently, military and law enforcement organizations have expressed a growing desire to integrate physiological measurement into simulations for training and feedback purposes. Progressive osteolysis can occur at the cement-bone interface of joint replacements and the associated loss of fixation can lead to clinical loosening. We previously developed a rat hemiarthroplasty model that exhibited progressive loss of fixation with the development of cement-bone gaps under the tibial tray that mimicked patterns found in human arthroplasty retrievals. Here we explored the ability of a bisphosphonate (zoledronic acid, ZA) to attenuate cement-bone osteolysis and maintain implant stability.

Photorealistic targets can make threat/non-threat judgments substantially more genuine and challenging compared to simple cardboard or silhouette targets. These pervasive stressors emphasize the need to continually surveil, identify, and mitigate negative factors before they can produce cascading consequences for the individual. The present study utilized a large sample ( = 13,666) to identify several factors that might lead individuals to have poor mental health days in an austere naval operating environment.
