Introduction Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, two of the most common forms of arthritis worldwide, are chronic diseases affecting the joints. The Rio Grande Valley is characterized by an abundance of health disparities, with previous studies showing increased rates of multiple diseases and disorders in this region. This study aimed to determine both the prevalence and the risk-adjusted average cost of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in the Rio Grande Valley and to compare them with the national average.

Multiple anthropogenic forces have pushed river ecosystems into undesirable states with no clear understanding of how they should be best managed. The advancement of riverine fish habitat models intended to provide management insights has slowed. Investigations into theoretical and empirical gaps to define habitat more comprehensively across different scales and ecological organizations are crucial in managing the freshwater biodiversity crisis.

Aims: The Single Assessment Numerical Evalution (SANE) score is a pragmatic alternative to longer patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). The purpose of this study was to investigate the concurrent validity of the SANE and hip-specific PROMs in a generalized population of patients with hip pain at a single timepoint upon initial visit with an orthopaedic surgeon who is a hip preservation specialist. We hypothesized that SANE would have a strong correlation with the 12-question International Hip Outcome Tool (iHOT)-12, the Hip Outcome Score (HOS), and the Hip disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS), providing evidence for concurrent validity of the SANE and hip-specific outcome measures in patients with hip pain.

Article Synopsis
  • A group of hemipterans, known as xylem-feeding bugs, uniquely feeds on xylem sap, which is a low-nutritional liquid under negative pressure in plants.
  • Recent research suggests that small xylem feeders face higher energetic costs, which could explain the evolution of larger-bodied species, but prior studies focused only on adult insects.
  • Our study on the common meadow spittlebug shows that the cibarial pump grows predictably during development, allowing even tiny first instar nymphs to feed efficiently at high tension levels without significant energy costs.

Encounters between animals occur when animals are close in space and time. Encounters are important in many ecological processes including sociality, predation and disease transmission. Despite this, there is little theory regarding the spatial distribution of encounters and no formal framework to relate environmental characteristics to encounters.

Microglia are the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS). We and others have shown that the inflammatory response of microglia is partially regulated by the immunoproteasome, an inducible form of the proteasome responsible for the generation of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I epitopes. While the role of the proteasome in the adaptive immune system is well established, emerging evidence suggests the immunoproteasome may have discrete functions in the innate immune response.

Background: The Bernese Periacetabular Osteotomy (PAO) has become a popular surgery for fixing development dysplasia of the hip, yet the most common concerns of the PAO population remains ambiguous. The aim of this study was to investigate Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to further understand what the most common preoperative and postoperative questions patients undergoing PAO are asking. We hypothesized most questions would be asked by patients in the preoperative timeframe with regards to education surrounding PAO surgery.

Within the European Union, the European Medicines Agency's (EMA's) European Public Assessment Report (EPAR) is an important source of information for healthcare professionals and patients that allows them to understand important risks and uncertainties associated with the use of a medicine. However, the EPAR sections describing such important uncertainties can differ substantially in wording, length, and detail, thereby potentially limiting understanding. In this study, we therefore present a natural language processing approach to cluster sentences extracted from the sections on uncertainties in EPARs of centrally authorized medicines, as a steppingstone to harmonization of text describing uncertainties.

In the European Union, the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) develop guidelines to guide drug development, supporting development of efficacious and safe medicines. A European Public Assessment Report (EPAR) is published for every medicine application that has been granted or refused marketing authorisation within the EU. In this work, we study the use of text embeddings and similarity metrics to investigate the semantic similarity between EPARs and EMA guidelines.

Post-marketing reports of suspected adverse drug reactions are important for establishing the safety profile of a medicinal product. However, a high influx of reports poses a challenge for regulatory authorities as a delay in identification of previously unknown adverse drug reactions can potentially be harmful to patients. In this study, we use natural language processing (NLP) to predict whether a report is of serious nature based solely on the free-text fields and adverse event terms in the report, potentially allowing reports mislabelled at time of reporting to be detected and prioritized for assessment.

Background: Dashboards are an important tool for hospitals to improve quality and safety performance. However, implementing quality and safety dashboards often does not increase performance due to a lack of use by health professionals. Including health professionals in the development process of quality and safety dashboards can improve their use in practice.

Evidence suggests that single photon absorptiometry (SPA)-measured forearm bone mineral density (BMD) is lower in contemporary children in Malmö than it was four decades ago, but the fracture incidence in the at-risk population (all Malmö children) has been stable during the same period. The aim of this study was to evaluate if improvements in skeletal structure over time may explain this observation. In 2017-2018 we measured distal forearm bone mineral content (BMC; mg/cm) and periosteal diameter (mm) in 238 boys and 204 girls aged 7-15 using SPA.

Background: In the midst of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, a new disease that affects children has arisen called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Several research articles focusing on its medical aspects have been published, but very few have focused on nursing care. The aim of this study was therefore to describe the nursing status of children suffering from MIS-C and the experiences of registered nurses (RNs) in caring for these children in paediatric hospital inpatient care.

Product information (PI) is a vital part of any medicinal product approved for use within the European Union and consists of a summary of products characteristics (SmPC) for healthcare professionals and package leaflet (PL) for patients, together with the product packaging. In this study, based on the English corpus of the EMA product information documents for all centrally approved medicinal products within the EU, a BERT sentence embedding model was used together with clustering and dimensional reduction techniques to identify sentence similarity clusters that could be candidates for standardization. A total of 1258 medicinal products were included in the study.

Decomposition is essential to carbon, nutrient, and energy cycling among and within ecosystems. Several methods have been proposed for studying litter decomposition by using a standardized and commercially available substrate. One of these methods is the Tea Bag Index (TBI) which uses tea bags (green and rooibos tea) incubated for ~90 days.

Although next-generation per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) were designed and implemented as safer and environmentally degradable alternatives to "forever" legacy PFAS, there is little evidence to support the actual transformation of these compounds and less evidence of the safety of transformed products in the environment. Multiple congeners of one such PFAS alternative, the chloro-perfluoropolyether carboxylates (Cl-PFPECAs), have been found in New Jersey soils surrounding a manufacturing facility. These compounds are ideal candidates for investigating environmental transformation due to the existence of potential reaction centers including a chlorinated carbon and ether linkages.

In synthetic method development, the most rewarding path is seldom a straight line. While our initial entry into pentafluorosulfanyl (SF ) chemistry did not go according to plan (due to inaccessibility of reagents such as SF Cl at the time), a "detour" led us to establish mild and inexpensive oxidative fluorination conditions that made aryl-SF compound synthesis more accessible. The method involved the use of potassium fluoride and trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCICA)-a common swimming pool disinfectant-as opposed to previously employed reagents such as F , XeF , HF, and Cl .

Patients undergoing major surgery experience postoperative inflammation, which may contribute to postoperative morbidity. Endogenous glucocorticoids (GCs) are an essential part of the stress response, but this response varies between individuals, which may in turn affect clinical outcome and specifically postoperative inflammation. Exon 1 of the gene, encoding the GC receptor (GR), contains an established region of differential regulation.
