Doppler-echo flow was measured in the assessment of 3608 carotid arterial systems (common, internal and external carotid arteries on one side). Conventional carotid angiography was performed in 156 cases, 363 were examined by digital subtraction angiography (DSA). All three methods were employed for 32 carotid systems.

In exceptional cases, acromegaly develops as the clinical expression of an ectopic secretion of Growth Hormone (GH) or Growth Hormone-Releasing Factor (GRF), tumorous in origin. In the present report, we describe an instance of acromegaly caused by the secretion of GRF from a voluminous pancreatic tumor. The resection of this tumor resulted in a temporary disappearance of the biological and clinical symptoms of acromegaly, which then reappeared in conjunction with a rise in plasma GRF.

We present our experience with the use of estradiol - bovine serum albumin (BSA) - fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) employed by LEE to localize estradiol receptors on frozen sections of breast carcinomas. 41 cases were studied on parallel sections with both conventional staining and a histochemical procedure. Heterogeneity of the cell population was usually found; however the histochemical result was influenced by morphological parameters.

Chemical and structural surface changes at enosseous bioglass-ceramic-implants (Ap 40) were investigated by means of electron microprobe after an implantation period of 4 to 52 weeks. An intimate bonding between regenerated bone and bioglass-ceramic surface was evident at points already after 4 weeks. Initial degradation processes at implant surface came to a standstill after 12th week.

The metabolism of low density lipoproteins (LDL) was studied in cultured fibroblasts obtained from five local patients diagnosed, on the basis of clinical features and serum cholesterol concentrations, as having the homozygous form of familial hypercholesterolemia. LDL receptor function was assessed by measuring the binding, internalization, and degradation of 125I-labeled LDL, and by measuring the stimulation of cellular acyl-CoA cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) activity which followed exposure to LDL. Fibroblasts from two cases (CF and GM) showed receptor activities which were approximately 10% of the values obtained with normal cells, while ACAT stimulation by LDL was very low.

Patients with type 1 hyperlipoproteinaemia present with relatively normal plasma levels of very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) together with marked hyperchylomicronaemia. Since the aetiological basis for the type 1 phenotype is a severe reduction in peripheral lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity, the discrepancy between the two triglyceride-rich lipoprotein fractions is paradoxical. In order to account for these observations we have previously proposed (G.

The authors report two cases of mucoargyrophilic carcinomas of the breast, occurring in 73 and 81 year old women. Both tumors consist of a central mucoid carcinoma surrounded by solid areas with lobular or endocrinoid features. Most cells showed an abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm or a mucinous appearance.

An infant presented in the first week postpartum with markedly elevated serum osmolality of unknown origin. The cryptic osmols were identified as glycerol and alcohol and were traced to the contents of local phenobarbitone elixir administered to control neonatal convulsions. This report highlights the importance of recognizing the potential dangers inherent in the nominally inert components of medication and stresses the extreme care required when modifying well-established formulations.

Ten cases of disabling "pus-pot" perineum secondary to hidradenitis suppurativa, urethral stricture disease, condyloma acuminatum and anoperineal fistula were treated by wide excision of involved tissues. In 7 men the testicles were transposed to thigh pouches, and in 3 the entire penile skin was excised and replaced with a skin graft.

The authors report thirteen observations of CAM of mixed solid and cystic type. They point out that besides a classic form of neonatal diagnosis might be a form late revealed in infancy or adolescence, of possible appearing after the embryonic period. This late form could be more localized.
