Thirty cases of phyllodes tumour (cystosarcoma phyllodes) of the breast that presented to the Clinical Oncology Unit at Guy's Hospital were reviewed. Tumours were classified as benign, malignant or borderline according to the following histological criteria: mitotic rate, nuclear pleomorphism, stromal overgrowth and tumour margins. In 14 (46.

The Curriculum Outcomes Review and Evaluation (CORE) system of outcomes assessment used in the accreditation of Canadian Dental Faculties by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the Canadian Dental Association is described. The CORE system, which has become an integral part of the regular accreditation site visit of Canadian dental predoctoral programs consists of (a) two methods of chart review, (b) assessment of the performance of a random sample of final year students in both diagnosis and treatment planning and in case presentation, (c) a structured observation in the clinical setting, (d) the application of a detailed and focused survey instrument prior to the site visit, and (e) the solicitation of feedback from involved students, faculty members, school administrators and accreditation site visitors. The overall response to the CORE program was favorable and plans to expand the program to dental hygiene accreditation are described.

When an abnormality is detected in a mammogram the following questions should be answered: 1. Does a significant abnormality exist, that is, is the abnormality present in at least two views? 2. Should special imaging techniques, such as ultrasound, be used? 3.

Structure-activity relationships in a series of (5R)-6-triazolylmethylene penems with potent beta-lactamase inhibitory activity are described. In most cases, their in vitro synergistic activity with amoxycillin is superior to that of clavulanic acid, sulbactam and tazobactam (YTR 830). Against an Escherichia coli TEM-1 infection in mice, the compounds showed a broad range of potencies; an optimum polarity was found, however, which gave maximum potency.

While the prognosis of younger women with breast cancer is controversial, there have been several significant reports indicating a more unfavourable outcome of the disease in this age group. A review has been conducted of the problems encountered in the diagnosis of breast cancer in younger women. The records of 227 consecutive patients aged 30-40 years who underwent breast biopsy were retrospectively analysed, and data studied in relation to the proportion of malignant to benign biopsies, the clinical and pathological features of the malignant cases, and the method of diagnosis.

Sodium (5RS)-Z-6-(substituted methylene)penem-3-carboxylates (3) are extremely potent inhibitors of bacterial beta-lactamases, but some members of this group of compounds are highly bound to human serum, while others are readily degraded by renal dehydropeptidase I enzyme. Consequently, the stability of a variety of 6-(substituted methylene)penems (3) to human kidney homogenate, their binding to human serum and their activity in a mouse infection model was investigated at an early stage, and were instrumental in the selection of the 1,2,3-triazolylmethylene derivatives (e.g.

Sodium (5RS)-Z-6-(heterocyclylmethylene)penem-3-carboxylates (2) are a series of extremely potent inhibitors of bacterial beta-lactamases. A variety of 5-membered heteroaromatic derivatives have been prepared and structure-activity studies reveal a preferred substituent orientation. One of these derivatives, the 1-methyl-1,2,3-triazolyl compound (5m) is a more potent synergist of amoxycillin than clavulanic acid, sulbactam or tazobactam.

The clinical stage at presentation of 280 women with histologically proven breast cancer is reviewed over a 25 year time span from 1962 to 1987. The data from 240 unscreened patients, including 87 women from the period 1962 to 1963, 103 women from 1981 to 1982, and 50 women from 1986 to 1987 demonstrate a chronologically based improvement in the stage of disease at presentation over the 25 years. Specifically, over that period, there was a fall in the mean tumour diameter, a reduction in the proportion of patients with involved axillary nodes, and a greater percentage of patients with Stages I and II disease.

The heterogeneity of human red cell (RBC) autoantibodies may be assessed by using anti-idiotypic antibodies. In this study, mouse monoclonal anti-idiotypic antibodies were produced against a pathologic RBC autoantibody with anti-Pr2 specificity. Epstein-Barr virus-transformed B-cell clones were established from a patient who had splenic lymphoma and associated immune hemolysis due to an anti-Pr2 cold autoantibody.

A brief summary of the current status of the Canadian Dental Aptitude Test (CDAT) is presented. The number of first-time writers of the CDAT is reported by the province of their preference as designated by the candidate on the test application form. Anomalies in the numbers taking the test are discussed and relationships with other provincial and regional parameters developed.

It has been suggested that the percentage of non-protein-bound or free oestradiol (E2) is abnormally high in patients with breast cancer. In this study, the serum oestradiol profiles of a large group of women were analysed to determine whether a significant correlation could be found between serum oestradiol and various breast diseases. In addition oestradiol levels were measured in relation to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), albumin levels, oestrogen receptor status and family history of breast cancer.

A breast lump due to infestation with Dirofilaria repens is reported in a Sri Lankan student residing in Brisbane. Although human infestation with this parasite is not uncommon in certain Asian countries, this is the first report of such a lesion occurring in Australia.

Data is presented relating to the number of students admitted to the first year classes of Canadian dental schools for the period 1974 through 1988 and projections for 1989. Additional data showing the number of non-Canadians in Canadian dental schools and the number of Canadians enrolled in the first year of United States dental schools is included. The study concludes that the number of Canadians in North American dental schools has not decreased but has actually increased over the last five years.

A protocol to provide a more rapid assessment of the fibrogenic potential of an inhaled particulate has been developed. Young rats are exposed nose-only for 6 h/day, 7 days a week for 28 days to a respirable aerosol of the test compound. After exposure the rats are kept for up to 1 year, followed by histopathological assessment of the lung.

The number of individuals writing the Canadian Dental Association Dental Aptitude Test and the American Dental Association Dental Admissions Test for the first time is used as a measure of the number of new additions to the dental school applicant pool in each of the past 15 years. Dramatic changes have occurred during that period. Comparisons are made and similarities noted between the situations in the United States and Canada.

The halocarbon BCF was tested in 3 assays to assess its mutagenicity and clastogenicity. It produced a positive response in Salmonella typhimurium strain TA1535 but was negative in TA1537, TA1538, TA98 and TA100. In an L5178Y mouse lymphoma microwell assay (TK locus), BCF was negative.

C57Bl/6J mice of both sexes were exposed to 50 000 ppm vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) for 6 h. Animals were killed 24 and 48 h after cessation of exposure and examined for the presence of micronuclei in bone marrow cells. At 24 h the control incidences of micronuclei per 1000 polychromatic erythrocytes (PCEs) were 2.
