The species complex (FLSC) currently comprises 11 phylogenetic species, including accepted names such as , , and , which have mostly been reported in association with citrus and coffee. Many varieties were documented by Wollenweber & Reinking (1935), which is indicative of a wider diversity of species within this group. The lack of type material in some cases, especially for the older names, means that definition by molecular phylogeny is very difficult.

Article Synopsis
  • The planum temporale (PT) area in the left hemisphere is crucial for language development and is found to be asymmetrical in both humans and newborn baboons, indicating a possible pre-wired language readiness in the brain.
  • Research showed that 27 newborn baboons with a larger left PT were more likely to develop right-handed communication gestures as they matured, suggesting a link between early brain structure and future communicative behavior.
  • This study implies that PT asymmetry might represent an evolutionary trait that underlies shared gestural communication in both monkeys and humans.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality following kidney transplantation. Heart failure affects 17-21% of patients with chronic kidney disease and increases along with time receiving dialysis. The Seattle Heart Failure Model (SHFM) is a validated mortality risk model for heart failure patients that incorporates clinical, therapeutic, and laboratory parameters but does not include measures of kidney function.

Neuropilin-2 (NRP2) is a cell surface receptor that plays key roles in lymphangiogenesis, but also in pathophysiological conditions such as cancer and inflammation. NRP2 targeting by efzofitimod, a novel immunomodulatory molecule, is currently being tested for the treatment of pulmonary sarcoidosis. To date, no anti-NRP2 antibodies are available for companion diagnostics.

Background: In the United States, more than 50% of kidneys in the lowest 15% quality range (those with Kidney Donor Profile Index >85) are discarded. Studies suggest that using more of these kidneys could benefit patients waiting for a transplant. This study assesses the trade-offs physicians make when selecting recipients for lower-quality kidneys.

Background: Mitochondria play a critical role in the production of cell energy and the regulation of cell death. Therefore, mitochondria orchestrate numerous cell effector functions, including fine-tuning the immune system. While mitochondria are mainly found intracellularly, they can escape the confine of the cell during the process of extracellular vesicle release.

In March 2022, Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) held a virtual Controversies Conference to address the important but rarely examined phase during which the kidney transplant is failing or has failed. In addition to discussing the definition of a failing allograft, 4 broad areas were considered in the context of a declining functioning graft: prognosis and kidney failure trajectory; immunosuppression strategies; management of medical and psychological complications, and patient factors; and choice of kidney replacement therapy or supportive care following graft loss. Identifying and paying special attention to individuals with failing allografts was felt to be important in order to prepare patients psychologically, manage immunosuppression, address complications, prepare for dialysis and/or retransplantation, and transition to supportive care.

In this study fungal strains were investigated, which had been isolated from eggs of the cereal cyst nematode Heterodera filipjevi, and roots of Microthlaspi perfoliatum (Brassicaceae). The morphology, the interaction with nematodes and plants and the phylogenetic relationships of these strains originating from a broad geographic range covering Western Europe to Asia Minor were studied. Phylogenetic analyses using five genomic loci including ITSrDNA, LSUrDNA, SSUrDNA, rpb2 and tef1-α were carried out.

The mitochondrion is an intracellular organelle thought to originate from endosymbiosis between an ancestral eukaryotic cell and an α-proteobacterium. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell, and can control several important processes within the cell, such as cell death. Conversely, dysregulation of mitochondria possibly contributes to the pathophysiology of several autoimmune diseases.

Background: While kidney transplantation has favorable outcomes in patients aged 65 years and older, many are not referred for evaluation despite having no contraindications. We wanted to determine whether incorporating geriatrics and geriatric assessments (GA), as part of kidney transplant evaluation at the University of Chicago Medicine, would help identify suitable candidates and improve transplantation outcomes among older adults.

Methods: Between 2012 and 2016, as part of their multi-disciplinary transplant evaluation, 171 patients underwent an initial GA with the study geriatrician, who rated them on a five-point scale from "poor" to "excellent," and presented their cases to multidisciplinary transplant review meetings.

Background/aims: Hypertension is treated primarily with angiotensin II (ATII) receptor blockers (ARBs) and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (ACEIs). Both ATII and ACEIs can trigger signal transduction via ACE, and a possible correlation between ARB/ACEI therapy and an increased risk of cancer is highly controversial. The question of whether or not ACE as a potential signal transducer affects human melanoma (MV3) cell behavior prompted the present study.

Unlabelled: Procurement biopsies suffer from challenges with quality and reproducibility and are linked to kidney discard. Nonetheless, procurement biopsies are obtained for the majority of kidneys in the United States, and biopsy findings are commonly relied upon in kidney acceptance decisions.

Methods: We conducted in-depth, semistructured interviews with 30 surgeons, nephrologists, nurse coordinators, and organ procurement organization (OPO) staff and directors to assess perceptions of factors contributing to kidney discard and strategies to reduce kidney discard, with a focus on the role of procurement biopsies.

Fungi from the genus Epichloë form systemic endobiotic infections of cool season grasses, producing a range of host-protective natural products in return for access to nutrients. These infections are asymptomatic during vegetative host growth, with associations between asexual Epichloë spp. and their hosts considered mutualistic.

Objective: Mitochondria are organelles that exhibit several bacterial features, such as a double-stranded genome with hypomethylated CpG islands, formylated proteins, and cardiolipin-containing membranes. In systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), mitochondria and their inner components are released into the extracellular space, potentially eliciting a proinflammatory response from the immune system. While cardiolipin and mitochondrial DNA and RNA are confirmed targets of autoantibodies, other antigenic mitochondrial proteins in SLE remain to be identified.

The dynamics of contaminants, such as mercury (Hg), in marine trophic webs is a critical topic in the scientific community due to the high concentrations encountered in organisms. In this study we attempted to provide information on total Hg accumulation patterns and possible pathways of trophic transfers assessed in combination with δC and δN to understand how this contaminant permeates three sub-Antarctic food webs: the Beagle Channel (BC), the Atlantic coast of Tierra del Fuego (AC-TDF) and Burdwood Bank (BB). We found a site-specific pattern of Hg transfer and biomagnification processes, while the oceanic BB showed major Hg transfer through the pelagic domain, coastal sectors (BC and AC-TDF) indicate a general biodilution process but with Hg concentrations incrementing with the benthivory grade.

Manual gestures and speech recruit a common neural network, involving Broca's area in the left hemisphere. Such speech-gesture integration gave rise to theories on the critical role of manual gesturing in the origin of language. Within this evolutionary framework, research on gestural communication in our closer primate relatives has received renewed attention for investigating its potential language-like features.

The Arcuate Fasciculus (AF) is of considerable interdisciplinary interest, because of its major implication in language processing. Theories about language brain evolution are based on anatomical differences in the AF across primates. However, changing methodologies and nomenclatures have resulted in conflicting findings regarding interspecies AF differences: Historical knowledge about the AF originated from human blunt dissections and later from monkey tract-tracing studies.
