COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is responsible for a pandemic of unparalleled portion over the past century. While the acute phase of infection causes significant morbidity and mortality, post-acute sequelae that can affect essentially any organ system is rapidly taking on an equally large part of the overall impact on human health, quality of life, attempts to return to normalcy and the global economy. Herein, we summarize the potential role of von Willebrand Factor and extracellular vesicles toward understanding the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, duration of illness, diagnostic approach and management of COVID-19 and its sequelae.

Purpose:  Evaluation of the diagnostic accuracy of a checklist-style structured reporting template in the setting of whole-body multislice computed tomography in major trauma patients depending on the level of experience of the reporting radiologist.

Materials And Methods:  A total of 140 major trauma scans with the same protocol were included in this retrospective study. In a purely trial-intended reading, the trauma scans were analyzed by three radiologists with different levels of experience (resident, radiologist with 3 years of experience after board certification, and radiologist with 7 years of experience after board certification).

Background: Insulin use may be a better predictor of stroke risk and morbidity and mortality than diabetes in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).

Purpose: Heating of gradient coils and passive shim components is a common cause of instability in the B field, especially when gradient intensive sequences are used. The aim of the study was to set a benchmark for typical drift encountered during MR spectroscopy (MRS) to assess the need for real-time field-frequency locking on MRI scanners by comparing field drift data from a large number of sites.

Purpose: To determine the stability of compounded sweetened vancomycin oral formulations in plastic unit dose cups stored up to 180 days under 2 temperature conditions: refrigeration (2°C-6°C) and room temperature (25°C with 60% relative humidity).

Methodology: A stability-indicating high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed to analyze vancomycin in the presence of degradation peaks. The stability of extemporaneously compounded vancomycin solution stored in oral unit dose cups was investigated using this method.

Method: During the 2021 MENISCUS webinar, an evaluation of meniscus surgery practices was performed by analyzing: (1) The presentation of the results of a survey conducted among ESSKA members and assessing their current practices in the field of meniscus surgery, (2) Four reports by national experts analyzing the trends in Arthroscopic Partial Meniscectomy (APM) and meniscus repair procedures in their respective countries (France, Belgium, Germany and Japan).

Results: (1) ESSKA Survey: Among the 461 respondents, 75% of surgeons claimed to perform more meniscus repairs and 85% less APM than 5 years ago.

The PLATelet inhibition and patient Outcomes (PLATO) study (NCT00391872) compared ticagrelor to clopidogrel in patients with acute coronary syndromes and demonstrated fewer cardiovascular events with ticagrelor but lower white blood cell counts (WBC) with clopidogrel. The selection of factor (F) X and its activated protease FXa for targeted inhibition to prevent and treat thrombotic conditions is based on an understanding of coagulation biochemistry, sequential steps that occur on tissue factor bearing cells and the interface of coagulation proteins, platelets, mononuclear cells and the nuclear constituents of inflammatory cells. The goal for developing direct oral FXa inhibitors was to achieve rapid, selective, predictable, safe and effective anticoagulation across a broad group of patients expected to derive benefit. In 2015, the American Heart Association awarded 4-year funding for a Strategically Focused Research Network focused on hypertension composed of 4 Centers: Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and University of Iowa. Each center proposed 3 integrated (basic, clinical, and population science) projects around a single area of focus relevant to hypertension. Along with scientific progress, the American Heart Association put a significant emphasis on training of next-generation hypertension researchers by sponsoring 3 postdoctoral fellows per center over 4 years.

This article studies to what extent societal processes such as educational expansion, economic modernisation and business cycles have affected the returns to educational certificates of women and men entering the labour market in West Germany. Using longitudinal data, long-term changes in cohort- and period-specific effects on socio-economic status attainment at entry into the labour market are investigated between 1945 and 2008. Analyses demonstrate that the entrants' average socio-economic prestige scores have clearly risen in the process of modernisation.
