Use of PDSA Cycles to Increase Aspiration Risk and Swallow Screening Documentation in the Hospitalized General Medical Patient Care Population.

Background: Aspiration, while hospitalized, can lead to increases in length of stay and health care costs. Nurses must identify patients at risk of aspiration early to initiate appropriate precautions.

Local Problem: An increase in-hospital patient aspirations at a Midwestern hospital prompted a review of events, which identified opportunities to improve identification of patients' risk factors and completion of the bedside swallow screening.

Precise Measurements of Decay Parameters and CP Asymmetry with Entangled Λ-Λ[over ¯] Pairs.

Based on 10 billion J/ψ events collected at the BESIII experiment, a search for CP violation in Λ decay is performed in the difference between CP-odd decay parameters α_{-} for Λ→pπ^{-} and α_{+} for Λ[over ¯]→p[over ¯]π^{+} by using the process e^{+}e^{-}→J/ψ→ΛΛ[over ¯]. With a five-dimensional fit to the full angular distributions of the daughter baryon, the most precise values for the decay parameters are determined to be α_{-}=0.7519±0.

First Observation of the Direct Production of the χ_{c1} in e^{+}e^{-} Annihilation.

We study the direct production of the J^{PC}=1^{++} charmonium state χ_{c1}(1P) in electron-positron annihilation by carrying out an energy scan around the mass of the χ_{c1}(1P). The data were collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. An interference pattern between the signal process e^{+}e^{-}→χ_{c1}(1P)→γJ/ψ→γμ^{+}μ^{-} and the background processes e^{+}e^{-}→γ_{ISR}J/ψ→γ_{ISR}μ^{+}μ^{-} and e^{+}e^{-}→γ_{ISR}μ^{+}μ^{-} is observed by combining all the data samples.

Protease- and cell type-specific activation of protease-activated receptor 2 in cutaneous inflammation.

Background: Protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) signaling controls skin barrier function and inflammation, but the roles of immune cells and PAR2-activating proteases in cutaneous diseases are poorly understood.

Objective: To dissect PAR2 signaling contributions to skin inflammation with new genetic and pharmacological tools.

Methods/results: We found markedly increased numbers of PAR2 infiltrating myeloid cells in skin lesions of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) patients and in the skin of contact hypersensitivity (CHS) in mice, a murine ACD model for T cell-mediated allergic skin inflammation.

Background: Ex situliver machine perfusion at subnormothermic/normothermic temperature isincreasingly applied in the field of transplantation to store and evaluateorgans on the machine prior transplantation. Currently, various perfusionconcepts are in clinical and preclinical applications. Over the last 6 years ina multidisciplinary team, a novel blood based perfusion technology wasdeveloped to keep a liver alive and metabolically active outside of the bodyfor at least one week.

Metabolic Tumor Imaging with Rapidly Signal-Enhanced 1- C-Pyruvate-d.

The metabolism of malignant cells differs significantly from that of healthy cells and thus, it is possible to perform metabolic imaging to reveal not only the exact location of a tumor, but also intratumoral areas of high metabolic activity. Herein, we demonstrate the feasibility of metabolic tumor imaging using signal-enhanced 1- C-pyruvate-d , which is rapidly enhanced via para-hydrogen, and thus, the signal is amplified by several orders of magnitudes in less than a minute. Using as a model, human melanoma xenografts injected with signal-enhanced 1- C-pyruvate-d3, we show that the conversion of pyruvate into lactate can be monitored along with its kinetics, which could pave the way for rapidly detecting and monitoring changes in tumor metabolism.

Since the 19 century, it has been known that the carnivorous Venus flytrap is electrically excitable. Nevertheless, the mechanism and the molecular entities of the flytrap action potential (AP) remain unknown. When entering the electrically excitable stage, the trap expressed a characteristic inventory of ion transporters, among which the increase in glutamate receptor GLR3.

Stigma as a Source of Stress for Adolescent Mothers and Their Babies.

Adolescent pregnancy and the babies of teen mothers have been a focus of attention and concern for many years. The literature on the health of pregnant and parenting teens, however, is largely silent about the impact of stigma on them and their children. Stigma is a pervasive cultural attitude, which leads us to overlook potentially good outcomes for this vulnerable population and contributes to poor outcomes for these mothers and babies.

A toolkit for enhanced reproducibility of RNASeq analysis for synthetic biologists.

Sequencing technologies, in particular RNASeq, have become critical tools in the design, build, test and learn cycle of synthetic biology. They provide a better understanding of synthetic designs, and they help identify ways to improve and select designs. While these data are beneficial to design, their collection and analysis is a complex, multistep process that has implications on both discovery and reproducibility of experiments.

Introduction to use of an acute seizure action plan for seizure clusters and guidance for implementation.

It is important for patients with epilepsy and their caregivers, including care partners, to understand the patient's seizure clusters and what to do when they occur. In many instances, seizure clusters are unique to each patient. The knowledge gained from understanding a patient's seizure cluster or seizure pattern provides a foundation for taking prompt action to prevent worsening to prolonged seizures, status epilepticus, and potentially death.

Assessing dependence between frequency and severity through shared random effects.

Research on the occurrence and the final size of wildland fires typically models these two events as two separate processes. In this work, we develop and apply a compound process framework for jointly modelling the frequency and the severity of wildland fires. Separate modelling structures for the frequency and the size of fires are linked through a shared random effect.

Adaptive phenotypic plasticity is under stabilizing selection in Daphnia.

The adaptive nature of phenotypic plasticity is widely documented. However, little is known about the evolutionary forces that shape genetic variation of plasticity within populations. Whether genetic variation in plasticity is driven by stabilizing or diversifying selection and whether the strength of such forces remains constant through time, remain open questions.

Osteosarcoma is the most common type of pediatric bone tumor. Despite great advances in chemotherapy during the past decades, the survival rates of osteosarcoma patients remain unsatisfactory. Drug resistance is one of the main reasons, leading to treatment failure and poor prognosis.

The Effectiveness of Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for the Treatment of Depression in a Large Real-World Primary Care Practice: A Randomized Trial.

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) for depression, to that of treatment as usual (TAU) alone. MethodsIn this study, 302 depressed adult Family Medicine outpatients were randomized to receive either TAU or additional access to Thrive, a fully automated iCBT program with three video-based modules, each containing 10 lessons using behavioral activation, cognitive restructuring, and social skills training. The primary outcome was the change in the score on an online patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9), measured at 0, 8, and 24 weeks.

Observation of a State X(2600) in the π^{+}π^{-}η' System in the Process J/ψ→γπ^{+}π^{-}η'.

Based on (10087±44)×10^{6}  J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, the process J/ψ→γπ^{+}π^{-}η^{'} is studied using two largest decay channels of the η^{'} meson, η^{'}→γπ^{+}π^{-} and η^{'}→ηπ^{+}π^{-}, η→γγ. A new resonance, which we denote as the X(2600), is observed with a statistical significance larger than 20σ in the π^{+}π^{-}η^{'} invariant mass spectrum, and it has a connection to a structure around 1.5  GeV/c^{2} in the π^{+}π^{-} invariant mass spectrum.

The insertion of an endogenous retroviral long terminal repeat (LTR) sequence into the bovine apolipoprotein B (APOB) gene is causal to the inherited genetic defect cholesterol deficiency (CD) observed in neonatal and young calves. Affected calves suffer from developmental abnormalities, symptoms of incurable diarrhoea and often die within weeks to a few months after birth. Neither the detailed effects of the LTR insertion on APOB expression profile nor the specific mode of inheritance nor detailed phenotypic consequences of the mutation are undisputed.

Four-Year Accelerometry Outcomes from a Cluster Randomized Whole of Systems Trial of Prevention Strategies for Childhood Obesity.

We investigated the effect of the Whole of Systems Trial of Prevention Strategies for Childhood Obesity (WHO STOPS) intervention on children's objectively measured physical activity and sedentary time (ST). We conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial with children in grades 4 (∼9-10 years old) and grade 6 (∼11-12 years old) from 10 communities in the Great South Coast region of Victoria, Australia. Communities were randomly allocated (1:1) to receive the WHO STOPS intervention in 2015.

Bio-Mimicking Acellular Wet Electrospun Scaffolds Promote Accelerated Integration and Re-Epithelialization of Full-Thickness Dermal Wounds.

Scaffolds can promote the healing of burns and chronic skin wounds but to date have suffered from issues with achieving full skin integration. Here, we characterise the wound response by both tissue integration and re-epithelialization to a scaffold using wet electrospinning to fabricate 3D fibrous structures. Two scaffold materials were investigated: poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and PCL + 20% rat tail type 1 collagen (PCL/Coll).

Healthy weight, health behaviours and quality of life among Aboriginal children living in regional Victoria.

Objective: To report the prevalence of healthy weight and related behaviours among Victorian Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children and explore associations between these factors and health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Methods: Analysis of cross-sectional data from two cluster randomised controlled trials using logistic and linear mixed models. The sample included Aboriginal (n=303) and non-Aboriginal (n=3,026) children aged 8-13 years.
