Background: Neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH) causes pathological falls in standing blood pressure that may or may not be symptomatic. nOH also raises the risk of poor neurological outcomes irrespective of symptom presence, possibly reflecting subclinical cerebral hypoperfusion. Dynamic changes in cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFv) help infer how blood pressure fluctuations influence CBFv and cerebral autoregulation.

Accessible and inclusive participation in sport can provide significant physical, psychological, and social benefits to Deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) athletes. To understand how to facilitate these benefits, the researchers explored the lived physical education and sport experiences of D/HH collegiate athletes. Six athletes representing six sports were recruited and interviewed.

To better understand the benefits and challenges of participation in competitive masters rowing, the purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of competitive masters rowers.

Background: Reported orthostatic hypotension (OH) prevalence in Parkinson's disease (PD) varies widely, with few studies evaluating specifically neurogenic-OH (nOH). The ratio of orthostatic heart rate (HR) to systolic blood pressure (SBP) change (Δ) is a valid screening method to stratify nOH/non-nOH but has had minimal epidemiologic application.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of nOH and non-nOH in the PPMI using the ΔHR/ΔSBP ratio and examine associations between nOH and various motor and non-motor measures.

Ageism is often neglected in higher education curriculum, leaving many students unaware of its harmful effects and how to address it. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine the benefits of education on ageism and intergenerational contact in a 1-credit seminar course on ageism. Participants included 21 students (experimental group) in an ageism course and 35 students (control group) in reading-based seminar courses unrelated to ageism.

Gender Differences in Pain Threshold, Unpleasantness, and Descending Pain Modulatory Activation Across the Adult Life Span: A Cross Sectional Study.

The neurobiological underpinnings of gender differences in pain perception, and how these differences may be modified by age, are incompletely understood, placing patients at risk of suboptimal pain management. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we examined brain responses in the descending pain modulatory system (DPMS, specifically, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, insula, hypothalamus, amygdala, and periaqueductal gray, during an evoked pain task. We investigated the interaction of age and gender in our sample of healthy adults (27 females, 32 males, 30-86 years) on DPMS response.

There are many cognitive, physical, and social-emotional benefits for youths from participating in outdoor adventure activities. However, youths with visual impairments are not given the same opportunities to participate in outdoor adventure activities as their peers without disabilities. The purpose of this study was to examine the outdoor adventure experiences of youths with visual impairments participating in a week-long sports camp.

Home-Based Pilot Intervention to Improve Quality of Life and Related Outcomes among Unpaid Caregivers and Their Care-Recipients with Visual Impairments.

The increasing lifespan of the United States population has led to a rise in the prevalence of age-related chronic diseases, increasing the need for unpaid caregivers. Currently, little research is known about this specific population beyond the limited formal training unpaid caregivers receive on the caregiving process. Acquiring visual impairments (VI) later in life places a large emotional toll on both the loved one and their caregivers.

The effectiveness of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) on intercultural competence development in higher education.

Unlabelled: In this study we measured the effect of COIL on intercultural competence development using a quasi-experimental design. Our sample consisted of 108 undergraduate students from two universities, one located in the Netherlands (NL) and one in the United States (US). Students' self-reported intercultural competence was measured using a pre-post survey which included the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS) and Multicultural Personality Questionnaire (MPQ).

"Moving Freely in Space with Power and Not Be Afraid": An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of the Experiences of Elite Rowers with Visual Impairment.

Due to the accessibility of the sport of rowing for individuals with visual impairment (VI), rowers with VI are a unique population because they have the potential to be just as competitive outside of Para-rowing as sighted rowers. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of elite rowers with VI in relation to the benefits and challenges of those experiences as well as their peer and coach relationships. Adopting an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach to guide data collection, analysis, and interpretation, eight participants with VI who rowed on the national level or higher were recruited and interviewed.

Quality of Life and Related Outcomes Among Unpaid Caregivers of Older Adults With Visual Impairment.

Caregivers of older adults with visual impairments are often family members who spend many hours caring for loved ones at the expense of their personal needs. The purpose of this study was to examine the quality of life of unpaid caregivers of older adults with visual impairments and determine the barriers and facilitators for improving their quality of life. To examine this population, 130 unpaid caregivers of older adults with visual impairments were surveyed using the Satisfaction with Life Scale, Living Arrangement and Indicators of Social Interaction Survey, the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Caregiver Quality of Life (EQ-5D), and the Perceived Change Index (PCI).

Running is a popular sport, and, with simple modifications, it can be accessible for individuals with visual impairments, particularly with a sighted running guide. The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of runners with visual impairments and sighted running guides. Adopting a descriptive qualitative approach to guide data collection analysis and interpretation, seven runners with visual impairments and four sighted running guides were recruited and interviewed.

Religious Sisters in Healthcare: The Conspicuous Love of Jesus.

To better understand the impact Roman Catholic religious sisters have had on healthcare in the United States, the authors initiated the Religious Sisters in Health Care: The Conspicuous Love of Jesus project, recording sisters' stories of service, obedience, and leadership that point to their foundational work of making the healing presence of Jesus central to Catholic healthcare identity. The sisters' counsel for nurses and all staff in Catholic healthcare was to focus on Jesus' love in all work and to keep each person's healing ministry alive through regular rejuvenating opportunities.

A Qualitative Inquiry of a Three-Month Virtual Practicum Program on Youth with Visual Impairments and Their Coaches.

Research has shown that the practicum experience for professional preparation students in physical education teacher education programs related to teaching youth with disabilities can improve self-efficacy. It is not currently known if a virtual program can be effective for the professional preparation students or the participants. The objective of this study was to determine the experiences of the participants of a three-month virtual practicum program.

A Randomized Feasibility Trial of a Fundamental Motor Skill Parent-Mediated Intervention for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the feasibility of a fundamental motor skills (FMS) intervention with two groups on the acquisition of FMS of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We randomly assigned families ( = 15) of children with ASD aged 4-11 years into two groups (a workshop or a home-based group) focused on FMS development. Both groups participated in a 10-week intervention and were given the same instructional manual and adapted physical activity equipment.

The Brief Form of the Test of Gross Motor Development-3 for Individuals with Visual Impairments.

Children with visual impairments (VI) tend to struggle with their fundamental motor skills (FMS), and these difficulties often persist across the lifespan, requiring frequent assessment. Foods of low nutritional quality are heavily marketed to children, and exposure to food ads shapes children's preferences and intake towards advertised foods. Whether food ad exposure independently relates to an overall lower diet quality among children remains unclear. We examined the association between ad-supported media use, a proxy for food ad exposure, and diet quality using the baseline data (2014-2015) from 535 3-5-year-olds in a community-based cohort study.

Background: Postmortem studies of Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains not only find amyloid-β (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) in the primary and associative visual cortical areas, but also reveal a temporally successive sequence of AD pathology beginning in higher-order visual association areas, followed by involvement of lower-order visual processing regions with disease progression, and extending to primary visual cortex in late-stage disease. These findings suggest that neuronal loss associated with Aβ and NFT aggregation in these areas may alter not only the local neuronal activation but also visual neural network activity.

Conventional understanding of acute onset language deficits indicates that fluent aphasias are due to perisylvian lesions in the dominant hemisphere, most often in the setting of acute stroke. Case studies and retrospective analyses, however, suggest the need to keep ictal phenomena as an alternative diagnostic possibility. The following case illustrates an epileptic mechanism of sudden onset fluent aphasia mimicking an acute stroke presentation.
