Novice vs expert inter-rater reliability of the balance error scoring system in children between the ages of 5 and 14.

Background: The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) is a tool to measure balance, however, no studies have shown its reliability between novice and expert raters.

Research Question: What is the inter-rater reliability of BESS measurements when performed by novice raters compared to experts, and does completion of a focused, online training module increase the inter-rater reliability among novice raters?

Methods: In this reliability study, 5 novice volunteers were asked to independently rate BESS tests from 50 random prerecorded BESS videos of normal healthy subjects aged 5-14. Novice raters regraded the same 50 videos after receiving a formal training.

Elemental Characterization and Discrimination of Nontoxic Ammunition Using Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis and Principal Components Analysis.

Concerns over the toxic by-products produced by traditional ammunition have led to an increase in popularity of nontoxic ammunition. In this work, the chemical composition of six brands of nontoxic ammunition was investigated and compared to that of a road flare, which served as an environmental source with similar composition. Five rounds of each brand were fired while a further five were disassembled and the primer alone was fired.

Peri-transplant psychosocial factors and neutrophil recovery following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Objective: Multiple psychosocial factors appear to affect cancer progression in various populations; however, research investigating the relationship between psychosocial factors and outcomes following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) is scarce. Subject to adverse immunological and psychological conditions, HCT patients may be especially vulnerable to psychosomatic health sequelae; therefore, we studied whether optimism and anxiety influence the pertinent clinical outcome of days to neutrophil engraftment (DTE).

Method: 54 adults undergoing either autologous or allogeneic HCT completed self-report questionnaires measuring optimism and anxiety.

Differentiation of bullet type based on the analysis of gunshot residue using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

Porcine tissue samples shot with two different types of bullets, jacketed and nonjacketed, were collected in the fresh state and throughout moderate decomposition. Wound samples were microwave-digested and analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to detect all elements present at measurable levels in gunshot residue (GSR). Elements detected included antimony (Sb), barium (Ba), and lead (Pb), which are considered characteristic of GSR, as well as iron (Fe) and copper (Cu).

Self-neglect: adaptation of a clinical tool to the practice of the medical examiner.

Self-neglect is the inability or unwillingness to provide for oneself the goods and services needed to live safely and independently. It is the most common allegation reported to Adult Protective Services agencies throughout the United States. Unfortunately, it seems that most medical examiners and their teams are not trained appropriately on self-neglect and forget to ask pertinent questions and document relevant observations.

The effect of using music therapy with relaxation imagery in the management of patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation: a pilot feasibility study.

Context: Bone marrow/stem cell transplantation is becoming an increasingly common treatment for a variety of hematologic disorders. The treatment process is not benign. Both physiologic and psychological regimen-related side effects are common, painful, and even life threatening.

Singing as a Therapeutic Agent, inThe Etude, 1891-1949.

The Etude music magazine, founded by Theodore Presser, was one of a number of popular music magazines published in the years prior to the establishment of the music therapy profession in 1950. During its publication run from 1883 to 1957, over 100 music therapy related articles appeared, including 13 on the health benefits of singing published between 1891 and 1949. Written by authors with diverse backgrounds, such as the famous Battle Creek, Michigan physician John Harvey Kellogg and Boston music critic Louis C.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma of the head and neck region.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma is a soft tissue malignancy most often found in the extremities of young adults; when these tumors arise in the head and neck area, they usually appear in the orbit or the tongue. Their initial behavior is relatively indolent, but over time a sizable number of these tumors recur locally and metastasize; as such, they are best regarded as fully malignant neoplasms. The derivation of these tumors remains uncertain: while some have suggested that these are tumors of muscle origin and others have postulated a neuroendocrine origin, the evidence accumulated to date is conflicting, and so these neoplasms continue to be regarded as tumors of uncertain origin.

Wegener's granulomatosis of the head and neck.

Among the more puzzling non-neoplastic necrotizing lesions of the head and neck area is Wegener's granulomatosis. This is a condition of unknown cause that may present (in the head and neck area) with ulceration of the nasal septum, sinus mucosa, oral mucosa, or external ear canal, or even destruction of the vocal cord. Diagnosis depends on the pathologic finding of a characteristic inflammatory reaction pattern (which, in its best-developed form, includes necrosis, granulomatous inflammation, and vasculitis) and the serum finding of an elevated antinuclear cytoplasmic antigen.

Pretreatment pathologic prognostic factors in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Squamous carcinomas of the head and neck region are a common problem for the otolaryngologist; surgeons are obliged to draw together disparate lines of evidence-from physical examination, pathology, and radiology-to plan optimal therapy for their patients. This article explores some of the ways in which pathologic analysis of a biopsy specimen in the past (determination of extent of invasion and degree of differentiation), present (including an analysis of the pattern of infiltration and the tumor' s DNA content), and, perhaps, the future (possibilities including cytogenetics and analysis of discrete steps in the cell cycle) plays a role in this process.

Stability of tacrolimus (FK 506) and cyclosporin G in whole blood.

The stability of two new immunosuppressants, tacrolimus and cyclosporin G (CsG), was evaluated in whole blood following incubation of patient specimens at ambient temperature or 4 degrees C for time periods of 2 (48 h) and 7 days (168 h) after collection. No decrease in CsG concentrations was noted over a 7-day period for specimens stored at either ambient temperature or 4 degrees C. For tacrolimus, the concentrations of drug in whole blood stored at ambient temperature for 7 days had a slight downward trend.
