A common heritable factor influences prosocial obligations across multiple domains.

Although it has been shown that prosocial behaviour is heritable, it has not yet been established whether narrower aspects of prosociality are heritable, nor whether a common mechanism influences prosociality across its multiple domains. Here, we examine civic duty, work-place commitment and concern for the welfare of others with a study of prosocial obligations in 958 adult twin-pairs. Multivariate modelling indicated the existence of genetic factors underlying general prosocial obligations in females, with familial effects (genetic and shared-environment effects were indistinguishable) influencing this general mechanism in males.

Transforming youth mental health services and supports in Ireland.

Background: Young people in the Republic of Ireland do not have access to appropriate mental health services and supports, necessitating transformational change in delivery systems.

Methods: Discusses findings from a national needs assessment, core strategies within the change initiative, progress in system-building, and preliminary descriptive and outcome data.

Cognitive function in adolescence: testing for interactions between breast-feeding and FADS2 polymorphisms.

Objectives: Breast-fed C-allele carriers of the rs174575 single nucleotide polymorphism in the fatty acyl desaturase 2 (FADS2) gene have been reported to show a 6.4 to 7 IQ point advantage over formula-fed C-allele carriers, with no effect of breast-feeding in GG carriers. An Australian sample was examined to determine if an interaction between breast-feeding and the rs174575 single nucleotide polymorphism had any effect on IQ.

The effects of antidepressants on mitochondrial function in a model cell system and isolated mitochondria.

The in vitro effects of antidepressant drugs on mitochondrial function were investigated in a CHOβ(2)SPAP cell line used previously to determine the effects of antidepressants on gene transcription (Abdel-Razaq et al., Biochem Pharmacol 73:1995-2003, 2007) and in rat heart isolated mitochondria. Apoptotic effects of clomipramine (CLOM), desipramine (DMI) and of norfluoxetine (NORF, the active metabolite of fluoxetine), on cellular viability were indicated by morphological changes and concentration-dependent increases in caspase-3 activity in CHO cells after 18 h exposure to CLOM, DMI and NORF.

Tricyclic antidepressants and the incidence of certain cancers: a study using the GPRD.

Background: Several studies suggest links between cancer and tricyclic antidepressant use.

Methods: A case-control study using the General Practice Research Database examined whether previous tricyclic usage was associated with reduced incidence of brain (with glioma as a sub-category), breast, colorectal, lung and prostate cancers. Conditional logistic regression adjusted for age, gender, general practice, depression, smoking, body mass index, alcohol use and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use.

Genetic evidence for multiple biological mechanisms underlying in-group favoritism.

In-group favoritism is ubiquitous and associated with intergroup conflict, yet is little understood from a biological perspective. A fundamental question regarding the structure of favoritism is whether it is inflexibly directed toward distinct, "essentialist" categories, such as ethnicity and race, or is deployed in a context-sensitive manner. In this article, we report the first study (to our knowledge) of the genetic and environmental structure of in-group favoritism in the religious, ethnic, and racial domains.

LC-MS/MS determination of etravirine in rat plasma and its application in pharmacokinetic studies.

Etravirine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) that is active against NNRT-resistant HIV-1. A simple, sensitive, and specific LC-MS/MS method was developed and validated for the analysis of etravirine in rat plasma using itraconazole as the internal standard. The analytes were extracted with ethyl acetate and chromatographed on a reverse-phase XTerra MS C₁₈ column.

Genetic variance in a component of the language acquisition device: ROBO1 polymorphisms associated with phonological buffer deficits.

The region containing ROBO1 (Chromosome 3p12.3) has been implicated as a susceptibility gene for reading disorder and language deficit by translocation and linkage data. No association studies have yet been reported supporting any candidate gene.

Salp15 is a tick saliva protein that inhibits CD4(+) T cell differentiation through its interaction with CD4. The protein inhibits early signaling events during T cell activation and IL-2 production. Because murine Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis development is mediated by central nervous system-infiltrating CD4(+) T cells that are specific for myelin-associated proteins, we sought to determine whether the treatment of mice with Salp15 during EAE induction would prevent the generation of proinflammatory T cell responses and the development of the disease.

Neural induction is the first step in the formation of the vertebrate central nervous system. The emerging consensus of the mechanisms underlying neural induction is the combined influences from inhibiting bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling and activating fibroblast growth factor (FGF)/Erk signaling, which act extrinsically via either autocrine or paracrine fashions. However, do intrinsic forces (cues) exist and do they play decisive roles in neural induction? These questions remain to be answered.

Jigsaw: engaging communities in the development and implementation of youth mental health services and supports in the Republic of Ireland.

Background: Irish young people exhibit high levels of psychological distress, but community-based services and supports are often unavailable or inaccessible.

Background & Aims: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are members of a class of small noncoding functional RNAs that modulate gene regulation at the post-transcriptional level in a sequence specific manner. miRNA dysfunction has been linked to the pathophysiology of human diseases including those resulting from viral infections. The objective of this study was to investigate changes in miRNA profiles that occur in hepatoma cells expressing hepatitis C virus (HCV) and identify anticorrelated mRNAs, which may be their regulatory targets.

Expression and localization of five members of the testis-specific serine kinase (Tssk) family in mouse and human sperm and testis.

Members of the testis-specific serine/threonine kinases (Tssk) family may have a role in sperm differentiation in the testis and/or fertilization. To gain insight into the functional relevance of these kinases, their expression was examined both at the mRNA and protein levels. Quantitative PCR analysis confirmed that all five Tssk mRNAs are almost exclusively expressed postmeiotically in the testis.

Aims: To investigate the motivations for, and perceived benefits of, undertaking senior house officer (SHO) posts, and to explore the career pathways of those who do, examining trends in successive cohorts.

Method: Postal cross-sectional questionnaire survey of all dental and maxillofacial SHOs (DF2s) who had worked for two South London hospitals within the previous nine years (n=137). Respondents were grouped into three cohorts to enable responses to be examined in relation to respondents' entry to their first SHO post.

Predictive value of tumor proliferative indices in periampullary cancers: Ki-67, mitotic activity index (MI) and volume corrected mitotic index (M/V) using tissue microarrays.

Background: Morphometry [nuclear Ki-67 labelling, mitotic activity index (MI), and volume-corrected mitotic index (M/V)] for periampullary cancers using tissue microarrays has not been performed previously. The purpose of the study was to assess these indices on tissue microarray (TMA) sections constructed from patients with periampullary cancers and study their association with clinicopathological variables.

Methods: Immunohistochemical staining for Ki-67 was performed on formalin-fixed pancreatic TMA sections.

A new model of care for familial hypercholesterolaemia from Western Australia: closing a major gap in preventive cardiology.

Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is the most common monogenic cause of premature coronary artery disease. FH remains underdiagnosed and inadequately treated, with no national strategies for dealing with the problem. We report an executive summary of a comprehensive model of care for FH developed in Western Australia.

Background: Mitochondrial membrane complexes (MMCs) are key mediators of cellular oxidative phosphorylation, and inhibiting them could lead to cell death. No published data are available on the relative abundance of MMCs in different periampullary cancers. Therefore, we studied the expression profile of MMCs I, III, IV and V in periampullary cancers, reactive pancreatitis, normal pancreas and chronic pancreatitis.

Phenol groups in northeastern U.S. submicrometer aerosol particles produced from seawater sources.

Atmospheric particles collected during the ICARTT 2004 field experiment at ground based sites at Appledore Island (AI), New Hampshire, Chebogue Point (CP), Nova Scotia, and aboard the R/V Ronald Brown (RB) were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to quantify organic mass (OM) and organic functional groups. Several of these spectra contain a unique absorbance peak at 3500 cm(-1). Laboratory calibrations identify this peak with phenol functional groups.

Dyslexia and DCDC2: normal variation in reading and spelling is associated with DCDC2 polymorphisms in an Australian population sample.

The 6p21-p22 chromosomal region has been identified as a developmental dyslexia locus both in linkage and association studies, the latter generating evidence for the doublecortin domain containing 2 (DCDC2) as a candidate gene at this locus (and also for KIAA0319). Here, we report an association between DCDC2 and reading and spelling ability in 522 families of adolescent twins unselected for reading impairment. Family-based association was conducted on 21 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in DCDC2 using quantitative measures of lexical processing (irregular-word reading), phonological decoding (non-word reading) and spelling-based measures of dyslexia derived from the Components of Reading Examination test.

Impact of a raised body mass index on breast cancer survival in relation to age and disease extent at diagnosis.

The prognostic value of Body Mass Index (BMI) on breast cancer outcome is controversial and previous studies from this unit have not shown any significant relation to survival. The aim of this study was to re-examine any impact of a raised BMI on recurrence and survival related to age and disease stage at the time of diagnosis. Breast cancer patients (2,298) were reviewed and divided in groups by BMI.

Non-adherence to statin therapy: a major challenge for preventive cardiology.

Background: Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. In the last twenty years, effective lipid-lowering therapies, particularly statins, have become widely available to prevent and reverse the progression of disease. However, there is a significant gap between expected and actual benefits; this may be attributed to poor adherence to statin therapy.
